Advantages: Fast site, easy to navigate and cheaper than dealing by telephone Disadvantages: Some areas of site occasionally unavailable
I became a customer of TD Waterhouse by default some years ago, when they bought out Sharedeal, which was previously owned by the Skipton Building Society. TD Waterhouse is a subsidiary of the Canadian based Toronto-Dominion Bank, and it has further websites in Luxembourg (called Internaxx), Canada and the USA. Until about six months ago, before we were on the Internet, I had only dealt over the telephone. I decided to register with the online service ... ...in a nominee account, whereby TD Waterhouse holds the shares on your behalf with you registered as the beneficiary owner. Thus, there are no paper certificates and any dividends are paid directly to your account on the due date. The advantage here is that you don't have to wait for a cheque to arrive in the post and then wait a further 3-4 days for the funds to clear.

...any capital gains. Brilliant!
TD Waterhouse had an offer (still running at time of writing) for two months of commission-free trading, and with a reasonable online charge of £12.50 per trade I decided to give them a try.
Opening the account was fairly straightforward - but a word of warning is that there is a credit check procedure that slows things down - don't let it get too near the tax year end deadline. (Why is that, by the way? The account ... ...market and research data?
TD Waterhouse is at least acceptable on all of these, and for some matters it is excellent. In my view the online environment is more than adequate for most uses, though I suspect that most regular users will, like me, supplement the market news with additional sources such as the excellent Yahoo! Finance and MSN Money.
I have just three reservations about the system. Firstly, when looking at my portfolio value, I would ...

...one of the companies that TD Waterhouse took over in recent years I came to be a customer of TD Waterhouse by default. I choose to go online with them purely because it was an easy transaction to complete as they were my existing stockbroker. I called the company and corresponded by email to make them aware of this and they endeavoured to find out where the problem lay. I never found out why but things were corrected and I suggested that they waived their management fee for that period. They agreed and the company went up in ...

The hidden cost advantage I refer to in the heading is that executed prices are normally better than bid/offer prices originally quoted (NB not where quoted spread is already very small or for very illiquid stocks). This is more important than differences in commission from one broker ...

Following my earlier comments on the downhill quality of TDW I have just learnt that Hargreaves lansdown offer a free nominee account transfer service to them.
They also allow you unlimited online trades in the first month that you openthe account for only 5 pounds per trade.
Following that, I believe that all trades are at a set price of 15 pounds per trade.
That beats TDW hands down as TDW are planning put up the frequent traders rate to 19.95 ...
