Advantages Advantages An easy way out.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing major.

Tesco celebratory cakes. Lets take a walk down memory lane – it is your fifth birthday and Mum sets to with her mixing bowl and produces an amazing Victoria sponge sandwich complete with butter cream and jam in the middle and butter cream, birthday candles and your name written in Smarties on the top of it. Many years ago no birthday girl or boy would have ever felt wholly complete unless that special celebratory cake appeared on the tea table. But we have to move along with the times and I think that the major supermarket chains offer some wonderful celebratory cakes nowadays. Every child is ... more

Advantages Advantages Reasonable price, tastes non-synthetic, kids love it

Disadvantages Disadvantages It's not overly huge, but again great for small children

A couple of months ago my daughter celebrated her 7th birthday and the weeks leading up to it the dreaded words “birthday party” kept cropping up into conversation around the dinner table. Not wanting to disappoint my little cherub (ahem, yeah right) I set about planning a celebration never to be forgotten, as I knew that she was now nearing an age where birthday parties were seen to be uncool. This could be her last one and as she had asked so nicely how could I refuse. As the big day got ever nearer, I was quite pleased as everything was coming along nicely. Following tradition, I had ... more

Advantages Advantages Good value, cheap, tasty

Disadvantages Disadvantages The feet made of icing

We’ve had a birthday in our house recently. Normally I always bake a cake but for some reason this year my ten year old daughter who tries so desperately hard to pretend she is at least three years older decided she wanted a shop bought novelty cake. Most of the shop bought cakes I’ve purchased in the past have either been very dry or very small for the money spent out so I was a little wary when she stated her intentions. Off we popped to Tesco and I was amazed when she picked out a Chocolate Caterpillar Cake that only cost £4.99 compared to the huge array of others that were a lot more ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, nice light sponge, thick chocolate

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not good for anyone on a diet

Despite me being 24 on my next birthday, my Mum still likes to spoil me and get me a birthday cake. The year before last, her choice of cake was the "Curly The Caterpillar Chocolate Cake" and I have to say I was very impressed with her choice. Packaging The box was lime green in colour with a sheet of plastic over the main part of the cake, meaning you can see that cake while it is still in the box. All the usual information is written on the box such as nutritional information and storage instructions. Cost Although, as I already mentioned, this cake was bought for me, I have to admit that ... more

Advantages Advantages Delicious taste, easily 10-15 servings, reasonable price.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Messy!

As I have lots of nieces & nephews and quite a few friends with children now it's not unusual for me and 'Curly' the chocolate caterpillar cake from Tesco to meet at least a couple of times a year. Curly is a chocolate cake from Tesco, currently available for £4.98 and serving around 10-15 people (dependant on serving size!). Curly has lots of segments to show that he is a real Caterpillar cake, he has a face on one end as well as coloured feet made out of icing and he has a thick, chocolate, icing style coat which breaks away quite easily to help make a mess all over your table! There is ... more

Advantages Advantages Tastes great, dead cheap, not sickly.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Looks a bit mad

When I was little I used to love mum to get me a novelty birthday cake from the supermarket when it was my birthday. Sometimes she did but most often she used to make them for us. I always have a look at them when I go to the shops with her now cos I just like to see which ones they have. I was in Tesco the other week with some mates and we had gone in for a few cans and some crisps and pizza and stuff and I found this cake on the reduced items shelf. The outside of the box said it normally sells for £4.99 but it only had 2 days left on the use by date so they'd reduced it to 99p. There was ... more

I remember Marks and Spencer and the Co-Op used to sell a Caterpillar Cake, and me and my husband loved it. Slowly they disappeared from our local shops never to be seen again. However on Sunday while in Tesco I found the Caterpiller again, and I bought 1 to take to a birthday party. Would it still taste as good as I remember? Read on Packaging for this is alright. It is quite a slim line box and it is mostly green in colour, probably to indicate Grass that the Caterpiller would crawl through. It has a few leaf designs on this as well and a couple of flowers. The top is see through plastic and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Tastes good

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be dry in parts

A friend of mine bought this cake for my kids on their birthday which was just this month, the cake was shaped just like the shape of a caterpillar. It was what looked like made out chocolate and dolly mixture. On opening the box it is just laid on a tray ready to cut and serve, it does say on the box that this will serve 12 but I suppose that all depends on how big the pieces are cut.The cake has small dolly mixtures that are placed on the back of the caterpillar. And on the face it is full of yellow icing with different coloured icing parts to make the shape of the eyes, nose and mouth. When ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks fun, tastes fab and goes a long way.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Goes stale quite quickly.

This caterpillar birthday cake has been a favourite amongs kids and adults for years and sold within hundreds of stores. Now I know I'm supposed to be a grown up, but...it was bought for my birthday which was ace I have to say. The packaging was very attactive, quite hard to wrestle your way into however, it's green with a small character motif ontop of it. Now this cake is intended to provide twelve portions, not it looks rather small but once you dig in you realise it is quite dense (not in a bad way) and thus lasts that long. Now if you are dieting, this is a sure fire way to feel the guilt ... more

Advantages Advantages Good value for money.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Goes stale too quickly.

I recently bought the caterpillar cake for a friends birthday and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The sponge was soft, light and slightly springy (which as far as I know means it’s a good bit of sponge). The chocolate icing in the middle was decently sweet but still quite chocolaty, without making one feel a bit ill after the first few bites. But the real icing on the cake (pun intended) is the chocolate coating on the outside. It’s thick in some places due to large ripples to show the sections of the caterpillar. But that’s not what I’m raving about, oh no. That honour is ... more
