Advantages Advantages will appeal to young and older readers, very imaginative

    Disadvantages Disadvantages nothing major

About seven years ago, I said something to a colleague at work that didn’t have the effect I meant it to. Assuming they were well read enough to have come across Roald Dahl, I swiftly discovered that the first thing that came into their head when a sentence was started, “I is . . .” was not the brilliant creation that is the Big Friendly Giant, but Ali G! I think I felt quite old that day. The BFG was one of my childhood favourites (my copy must be twenty years old - so old that my name is written on it in my mum’s handwriting) and, as I often like to do, lately I re-read it for no other ... more

Advantages Advantages A fun, imaginative read for young children

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some aspects might be a little scary for sensitive children

Although I was an avid reader as a child, I didn't really discover Roald Dahl's novels until I was a parent and I began looking for suitable books to share with my oldest son when he was around six or seven years old. I went on to buy a boxed set of most of Dahl's classic children's stories and have read most of them several times over. One of my personal favourites has to be the 'BFG' - the Big Friendly Giant. The story starts with a little girl, Sophie, who is actually based on Dahl's own grand-daughter who grew up to be a model and celebrity in her own right. Sophie spots a giant in the ... more

Roald Dahl is undoubtidly master of childrens literature, a pure genius !! Combine the dark humour of Dahl with the magic pen of illustrator Quentin Blake and the results are pure magic. This pair really seem to know what children like to read and see. So some adults will be intensely offended !! It is very difficult to pick a favourite out of his books, but I think it must be the BFG (AKA Big Friendly Giant). The BFG tells the story of Sophie ( incidentally named after Dahl's granddaughter Sophie Dahl), an 8-year-old orphan who, unable to sleep during the "witching hour", is kidnapped (or ... more

I thought I would write my first book review not sure if it will be any good but will try. I have always loved Roald Dahl since being a child his childrens books are fantastic. I have read them all but this one is one of my favourites The BFG or (big friendly giant) to you. Is one that will always stick in my mind and something I believe even children now should read and my daughter has and really enjoyed it. So abit about the author first. WHO IS ROALD DAHL~~~~~~HISTORY~~~~~ I felt this warrented adding as Roald Dahl is sadly no longer with us. His father Harald Dahl moved here to England ... more

Roald Dahl. When his name is said you will automatically think children’s author. But in my opinion he is more than just a children’s author. His books stretch the imaginations of all to their farthest reagents with brilliant writing and imagination. I was sucked into his books by James and the giant peach. This is one of the most famous books he has ever written and has been read by millions. Also the witches which I have reviewed, made me really think and that had me hooked so when I came to read the BFG I was expecting an enthroning story with imagination and trust me it didn't disappoint ... more

Advantages Advantages Imaginations run free, humour, language

Disadvantages Disadvantages wanting more and not going to bed

I read his books when I was still a small girl in primary school. Now I still keep his collections and have an omnibus. The only regret I have is not bringing my books over. Fret not, cos holidays just started and I FOUND Roald Dahl's treasury in my university's library. I don't think I'll feel shy because I love his books alot. I've learnt english by reading his books as well and now? writing a review on it.lol. The BFG is a friendly giant in the land of giants who does not eat small human beans( human beings). But one day, having no choice, he had to kidsnatch (kidnap) Sophie, who is an ... more

This is just such a wonderful book to read! I cannot remember how many times I read it as a child. It is one of my most favourite books! If you enjoy curling up in bed and reading a great book, then this is definitely one you should think about reading. Whether you're a child wanting to read this book to yourself, or whether you're going to be reading it to a child, you will enjoy this story. Roald Dahl has a unique way of using language to make his books special. Not only does he create new and interesting words, such as Snozcumbers and Whizpops', but he describes the areas he takes his ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages none whatsoever, i've never complained

Roald Dahl has been a fave writer of mine since i first laid eyes on Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Being and everyday kid i was enthralled by the idea of a factory run by a strange man and the prospect of winning a golden ticket and gaining entrance into that fascinating place. I never did win a golden ticket but that book opened my life to the magical world if Roald Dahl. My fave books by Dahl are the BFG and Matilda. I shant go into detail abt the books as u SHOULD read them. All i want to say is that you wont regret it... for long before the hype of Harry Potter... Roald Dahl was ... more

First of al this book is for children. It is a heart warming tale that is specifically made for children. I read this book when i was about eight year old and enjoyed it so much that i recomended it for several of my friends. If you have a small child who likes fantasy books and want them to have a good read which they will enjoy this is the book for them. In a nutshell this book is about a big friendly giant (title) who every night blows dreams into little childrens bedroom windowns so they have a nice nights sleep. frankly, i can not see what all the fuss is about nowadays with this J.K.Rowling woman and her Harry Potter books. Yes, I have read them and I can see why people like them, sort of, but they are copied, I think to a large extent out of Dahl's books. this is not a ba thing, but dahl merely got there first. the dursleys are just like the twits and the BFG also makes an appearance in book 1. dahl is simply the master story teller and his vivd, lurid and humorous depictions are unrivalled. the editions with the cartoon characters in are brilliant and a must for any parent wanting to read to their ... more
