Advantages: Very funny in places Disadvantages: The title takes ages to say
Having thoroughly enjoyed “E”, the debut novel from Matt Beaumont and been quite amused by the horribly obvious cash-in follow-up that was “The E Before Christmas”, I was delighted to see a new novel from the author.
As much as anything, I’d been impressed by the way “E” and its companion were completely written in E-Mails, with date headers and everything. That originality, combined with the fact that it was also a pretty funny book, made Matt ... ...with his debut novel “e”, the story is set around life at an advertising agency. This time, though, rather than the setting being in the office, they’re at a film studio in Hounslow, in the middle of shooting an advertisement. In an effort to make it as good as they can and increase the agency’s profile, they’ve hired two of the biggest stars of American TV to play a couple. Advantages: Great book, easy to read Disadvantages: None
...you’re unlikely to get even the one book published if you cannot write. What I mean is that Matt Beaumont seems incapable of writing a normal book in a normal fashion. Take his first book, “e” for example. The entire book is in email format. The whole plot, sub-plot and character description comes via emails that have been sent to, from and around the firm upon which the book is centred. The follow-up, “an e before Christmas” was done the same way ... ...Beaumont’s third book, “the book, the film, the t-shirt” follows the same anti-establishment rules of writing. Not that there is even the merest hint of an email here. Instead, each chapter is split into character perspective. A two-way conversation is either relayed back to the reader by one, two or more characters. It’s an unusual way to write a book, but it seems to work.
