    Advantages Advantages Lots of choice, HPI checked, low margins so prices should be competitive

    Just a quick review this time... The Car Shop wasn't a brand I was familiar with until recently - having not been in the car buying market for at least three years. They have a few branches, including Swindon and Cardiff, as well as the nearest branch to my home in the Midlands - Northampton. I must admit I have always stayed away from these large car supermarket places with a passion.     I live in the East Midlands area and have been a bit of a pain with cars as I tend to buy one virtually every year but at the end of last year 2009 I wanted to buy a car which I could just relax in and keep for a long period of time. Near my home there is a place called Northampton and just off the A43 there is a destination which is clear to see named the Car Shop. I have to say at first they appear to have plenty of cars in stock and they claim to have 1000 vehicles, I am not sure how accurate this is.     Someone wrote here that using car megastores gives you more choice and competitive prices. This really isn't true and certainly not with The Car Shop. There are a lot of reliable, competitive small dealerships in Northamptonshire. I highly recommend Westbridge Motors (RAC approved) for repairs and they'll put you in touch with genuine and reliable dealers. Going back to The Car Shop in Northampton, their trade-in's are sent to auction and most of the cars on their lot are ex-fleet, ex-company with high mileage.     I bought a car from these guys a few weeks back, during the negotiations it transpired that the car only came with one key and so I asked the salesman how much it would cost for a new key. He went away for some time and came back with a figure - saying that this was the going rate and I could go to my dealer and get one. The quoted figure was about £80 short of the real figure - basically an out and out lie After finding out the truth about the price I called back and spoke to one of the senior guys, he admitted this was not good enough and that he would arrange a new key which I could buy ... more

    There's things associate with motoring that I don't think anyone likes and perhaps chief among them is actually buying the car. I've always been weary of used car dealers but not exactly flush enough to buy a brand new motor. Not to mention the high level of depreciation associated with almost every new car, so when I finally admitted my old car had done all it could, buying a new used car was the only way to go.     Disadvantages Disadvantages Salesman like a predator and customer service downright rude.

    I agree with other reviews, they are really pushy almost as soon as you turn up. At least that was my experience, but they can also get plain nasty when they think you've wasted their time. I saw a couple of likely cars on the Car Shop Northampton website and took a drive down there to have a look. I was approached by a salesman almost immediately and I made it clear that I wasn't going to sign a deal on a car that day. He stuck with me anyway!     Advantages Advantages If the car wasn't a lemon? They're conveniently situated. Otherwise, none I can think of.

    Seems I'm not the only one to buy a dodgy Volvo from this outfit, judging by previous reviews. I also purchased a warranty but paid over 700 quid for mine. Within four months of purchase a major fault developed which would have cost £1300 if I hadn't had the warranty. Three months after that another fault, not covered by the warranty, cost me almost £450. The car's only four years old and I bought it from The Car shop just under a year ago!     We are very wary of such dealerships, but after searching the internet for the vehicle I wanted, we drove miles, fuel bill huge, finding cars that were not in the condition stated in the advert, we were going round in circles. We had one left to see.......... at The Car Shop Northampton........ What did we have to loose? 95 miles away, ok not local but they had the car I wanted at a really good price, so off we went.     Last week i wnt to The Car shop and was utterly stunned by the amount of cars there were. Although i was overwhelmed i quickly realised that they have a process where they pick the car for you based on your details. A few of my friends had bought from there and were pleased so i too went down. I found the whole process seamless and was extremely pleased with the prices, especially as they had a sale on. I managed to get a BMW 3-series for a great price. I would recommend anyone to go!!!!!

    Advantages Advantages I've tried, but none spring to mind

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Company is too big. Deal with smaller businesses and get better customer service.

    Within three months of buying my Honda from this dealership the exhaust went. I called expecting them to say 'bring the car in, we'll take a look' or words to that effect (in my dreams). In a nutshell, they weren't interested. After a lot of distasteful negotiation, much of it very heated, I eventually convinced them that they needed to deal with it as it was obvious the exhaust hadn't been checked before passing the car to me. To cut a long story short they were rude, evasive, uncooperative and downright nasty at times because they knew they were in the wrong. Once this company has your money ... more
