As my review of The Fiery Cross proved, I traditionally enjoy nothing better than lambasting a badly-written book and mercilessly exposing its shortcomings like some kind of masochistic PE teacher. But in this case, I'm rather stumped. I really can't think of much in the way of scathing criticism for The Clan of the Cave Bear, and that leaves me feeling angry and scared. ...was a bit young considering the graphic nature of some of the scenes - but it remains one of my favourite books ten years later. If you have been put off this by reading previous bad 'cavemen' books, don't be. You can really see the extensive research that Jean Auel has put in and it brings the story to life. You not only believe in the story, you feel like you're there experiencing it with them. At times, the detail can get boring, as she talks ...
...time and how it affected the people living there, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure for many people, it is extremely enlightening - perhaps to people with more knowledge of gardening than me! I found the plot extremely engaging and interesting. It doesn't dwell too much on events but keeps it moving.
