Advantages: Amazing story with an incredible history Disadvantages: Very descriptive and drawn out
In The Clan of the Cave Bear, we are taken back 35,000 years to a time when two species of man lived on the earth amid icy glaciers and woolly mammoths. When five year old Ayla, a Cro-Magnon, is split from her parents by a shattering earthquake, she is taken in by a clan of Neanderthals. Iza, a medicine woman, and Creb, a powerful holy man, take in the sick and injured child. But her tall and thin body, long blonde hair, fair skin and blue eyes, ... ...and intimidated by her and the differences she has from them. Yet her intelligence and capability and the fact that she seems to bring luck wherever she goes, makes her admired by everyone except Broud, the future leader of the Clan, who seems to hate the ground she walks on. Follow the journey of Ayla in her fight for survival in a strange and moving prehistoric time. ~ My opinion ~ Seeing as I was named after the main character in this book, I ...

Advantages: Great storyline, compelling characters, moving ending Disadvantages: Descriptions can get a little samey
As my review of The Fiery Cross proved, I traditionally enjoy nothing better than lambasting a badly-written book and mercilessly exposing its shortcomings like some kind of masochistic PE teacher. But in this case, I'm rather stumped. I really can't think of much in the way of scathing criticism for The Clan of the Cave Bear, and that leaves me feeling angry and scared. If I was to sum up this series by drawing a parallel with something else, I'd have to compare it to the Rocky franchise. Yes, later instalments have become progressively more silly, irrelevant and often embarassing, but the title that kicked the whole thing off is pure gold. Rocky... sorry, Clan of the Cave Bear tells the story of Ayla, a young Cro-Magnon girl living about ten thousand years ...

Advantages: Excellent plot and believable characters. Disadvantages: Too much detail in places in terms of the landscape, trees, animals, etc.
...was a bit young considering the graphic nature of some of the scenes - but it remains one of my favourite books ten years later.
If you have been put off this by reading previous bad 'cavemen' books, don't be. You can really see the extensive research that Jean Auel has put in and it brings the story to life. You not only believe in the story, you feel like you're there experiencing it with them.
At times, the detail can get boring, as she talks ... ...time and how it affected the people living there, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure for many people, it is extremely enlightening - perhaps to people with more knowledge of gardening than me!
I found the plot extremely engaging and interesting. It doesn't dwell too much on events but keeps it moving. You almost find yourself holding your breath as you see events snowball towards an inevitable cataclysmic conclusion. And don't read it just before ...
