Dead Good Review ofThe Dead Zone - Stephen Kingby

Advantages: Excellent read Disadvantages: Don't start late at night (u won't put it down)
The Dead Zone is a work of fiction by one of my favourite authors, Stephen King. It was first published in Great Britain in 1979 by Raven books and the edition I currently own was published by Warner. For the few of you who do not know, Stephen King is a prodigious writer of horror and has produced such classics as: ‘Carrie’; ‘Christine’;The ‘Shawshank Redemption’; ‘The Green Mile’ and much, much more. All of the above have been made into major films ...

Advantages: Great storeyline Disadvantages: Not executed as well as it could have been
In the last few months I've gotten in to Bob Dylan, bought The Pearl by Brian Eno, read my way through the Hitchiker trilogy, not to mention experiencing what us mere mortals call 1984 by George Orwell. In retrospect it was a bad time to come back to The Dead Zone.
When I read it two years ago it was thrilling and well crafted, and while it's still a great book, this time it just seemed a bit too Bestsellerish.
There's a fantastic storey to ...

horror???? Review ofThe Dead Zone - Stephen Kingby
jessjessjess
Advantages: first part of the book is mildly engaging Disadvantages: too much American politics, not 'horror' enough, a bit hard to follow.
...OK and decided to borrow The Dead Zone by Stephen King, thinking it might be more like a horror story. It was also one of the shortest of his I could find at the library, being 467 pages long. I had heard a bit about Stephen King and knew he was a popular horror writer, confirmed by the popularity of the book at the library.
~Plot~ (contains some spoilers)
The prologue basically introduces the characters using the past for the reader to get ...

...was my first introduction to the weird world of Stephen King. It hooked me. The Dead Zone was responsible for a marked decline of interest in anything that wasn't supernatural, thought-provoking and downright bizarre.
Based around the life of John Smith, this is a tale about the gift of Pyschometry, a paranormal activity that involves receiving psychic signals from whomever or whatever the person touches.
John received a head injury as a child ...

...happen because of it. and the other is where a person expresses, usually latent, psychic powers, such as telekinessis, pyrokinessis, telepathy etc. the story then flows around how they cope with their powers then led them into bizarre situations within a normal world.
The Dead Zone falls into this category and this book is a blinder.
A well crafted story of a guy who has psychic visions and how his life is turned upside down by both the visions ...

Advantages: King before he ran out of gas. Disadvantages: You may feel sorry for the hero.
...and this is one of the best of them. But I think he has ambitions to be taken seriously by the EngLit crowd too, and there are themes in all of his books. The Dead Zone may represent the first appearance of a theme he more famously explores in Christine: the American cult of the automobile. The book's hero, John Smith, acquires a psychic talent in childhood when he injures his head skating on "cleared ice" at one corner of which "two rubber tires ...

Advantages: GREAT READ VERY GRIPPING Disadvantages: fantasy, it's noticibly fictacious
...novel. i was honestly on the edge of my seat for the most of it. this is yet another outstanding achievement by Stephen King. the reader is skillfully lured into another of Stephen King's fantasies and it is truly an unforgettable experience. there are countless twists and turns and although this may be irritating and hard to follow with some novels, it was very successful in 'The Dead Zone'. The main character's life is turned upside down after a ...

...disappointed, well not much anyway. The problem was, I watched David Cronenberg's excellent movie version first, and some of the segemnts of the original novel seemed out of place when compared to that film.
Not to say this isn't bad though! The story tells of a schoolteacher who has a road accident. he is left in a coma for 5 years, after which he awakes to find everyone else in his life has moved on, having assumed he was dead. Not only that, but ...

...Dead Zone. As you begin the story, you get sucked in. The hairs start to stand up on the back of your neck. You know exactly what is going to happen next......or do you? I thought I did and I was pleasantly surprised and wrong all the way through 3/4 of the book! I couldn't put the book down - it became a needful thing.
What the heck happened at the end though? Did SK run out of time/energy/inspiration, or did he hand the script over to his pet ...

The hero ( an ordinary type of man ), struggles to resolve the power he has obtained after an accident.
The reader must resolve the question :
Is the ability to see the future, a blessing or a curse?
Through Johnny we come to realise the difficulties
( ethically and morally )that are a neccessary element to what some would class as a 'gift'.

Advantages: Compelling Disadvantages: Goes on a bit during the end
...a series that wasn't quite the same as the book. From what I remember it\'s about a man who had a car crash a went into a coma for 5 yrs and when he came out of it he could see things that had happened and were going to happen in the future, when he touched an object or a person. I could go into more detail but that would be spoiling the story for future readers. By the way I thought this was a regular book review not an audio book review. Sorry. ...

adamcroft2k2
Advantages: Fantastically written, plenty of suspense Disadvantages: A little confusing in some places
This is the second Stephen King book I've read, and again, it's fantastic. The book is very in-depth, describing Johnny's relationship with Sarah very well, and really makes the reader empathise with Johnny, especially when Sarah goes off with Walt.
The Dead Zone is a sensational, thrilling story about a man named Johnny Smith who is in a car accident, and is stuck in a coma for five years. When he awakes, the world is very different, and so is ...
