GIMP is a free photo-editing tool similar to Photoshop, which can be used for anything from simple red-eye reduction, cropping and image size or file format changing to full professional photo retouching. GIMP is an acronym for "GNU Image Manipulation Program" and was written for UNIX or Linux computers, but now is also available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. I would like to reiterate the word "free". This software is downloadable legally for free and has been developed and supported by the users of the program as part of the "GNU Project". I won't go into the history of this, but the ... more

Advantages Advantages It's free. It's powerful.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not shrink-wrapped.

The GIMP -------- No, it’s not something from the cellar in Pulp Fiction—The GIMP is a piece of open source software that rivals the likes of Photoshop and Paintshop Pro. For those unfamiliar with Open-source—essentially the software is free, and what a revolution it is! Background ---------- GIMP stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program, and was designed originally to run on Unix (later, Linux), to fill a photoshop-shaped-hole on their platform. Fortunately for those of us too frightened to play with operating systems, there is a version available for Microsoft Windows, and it is that ... more

Advantages Advantages Free, easy to use - able to create professional pictures

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some cool features that we can do in PS but not in GIMP

My best friend told me about this - and I am glad she did. I am very impressed about how it works - and especially the fact there is no money involved whatsoever. Apart from money that you can gain. The GIMP, or GIMP is a free software that lets you edit photos, or create professional drawings and digital paintings. After finding out about GIMP, I no longer had to rely on MS Paint. It has many useful tools aswell as the simple Brush, Pencil and Eraser tools including 'Smudge' tool and more. I have been on the popular art website deviantART for 8 months now (Although I've just now moved account ... more

Advantages Advantages free, it has all main possibilities of products for image processing, works good and fast

Disadvantages Disadvantages the application is composed of separate windows and you chase them

GIMP is the free Photoshop. I used Photoshop because I worked in the domain of pre-press and I use Gimp because I work in the domain of web development. When I saw Gimp for the first time (after get used with Photoshop) I thought that this application is not user friendly. After working with GIMP, you will see that it is not bad. If your job is not image processing or pre-press, GIMP is one solution for free. You have all file formats for pictures, there are filters who work well, layers, transparency and so on. So, you have all main Photoshop functions and they work correctly. The negative ... more

Advantages Advantages Free, More Features, Easy to use

    Disadvantages Disadvantages New Layout

I am not really an expert photo editor but with GIMP, I feel like I am. It truly is an excellent option for image manipulation. You can edit practically any image formats here with all their features that are not present in Photoshop. Plus, there are templates and brushes that are readily downloadable from the internet. Even if its interface is quite different from Photoshop because it has a multi-windowed layout, I think one can easily adapt to it. And well, if it isn't that easy then there are a lot of tutorials available online. In my experience, it can handle quite heavy loads as it ... more
