King takes the old Brothers Grimm style fairytale of the child lost in the woods to a new level in this desperate tale of a young girls attempts at survival. ...baseball player who closes for the Boston Red Sox, so in the U.K he is almost completely unknown. Unsurprisingly, Stephen King's novel is not based around a baseball season, but a young girls desperate struggle for survival.

Trisha has had enough and so leaves the ... ...as she tries to rejoin the trail, she manages to get lost in the woods. I coveted this book from the day it came out, but only recently persuaded myself to buy it. I was in no way disapointed. The story is simple, and on reading the summary, it seemed it could drag on a bit - the story of a young girl lost in the woods. Far from this, the story became more and more compelling the further into it I got. The only character you are really involved with is Trisha, and this in itself shows how well the book is written. You ...

...got to be one of the shortest books that Stephen King has ever written at a mere 292 pages, however he has not scrimped on the writing style and his sheer story telling ability. As with all Stephen King books that I have ever read, you get the feeling you are actually there and can almost visualise what is happening.
The story revolves around a 9 year old girl called Trisha McFarland. Her parents had got divorced a year ago, and their mother had ... ...local woods, where she plans the route they will take along the Appalachian Trail. Whilst they walked Trisha's mother and brother Pete walked up ahead bickering all the while. Later on during their walk they come to a "Y" in the road and their mother decides they need to take the fork on the left. Shortly after taking this turning Trisha needs to go to the toilet, and keeps shouting to her mum and brother to let them know, but they don't hear her.

Advantages: Not too thick so you will finish it pretty quickly. Disadvantages: Loads....
...a while ago; it’s not the “thickest” book I’ve ever read, little fewer than 300 pages. To say I thoroughly enjoyed this book would be a lie but it was entertaining enough to keep my interest to some degree. I had wondered before, after reading Hearts In Atlantis, whether Stephen King had lost his flair and run out of his really good ideas, and this book actually confirmed it for me. I may be wrong he may have a little something ... ...all but three of all the books he has ever written and enjoying all of them, some more than others, I found myself feeling cheated after reading the final chapter. I’m used to (9 times out of 10) being left feeling refreshed and wanting more after reading a book by Stephen King, and this book just didn’t cut it with me. The book explains the situation of 9-year-old Trisha who is the sister of Pete, daughter of Quilla and Larry McFarland. ...

Advantages: Cheap at 5.99, Very original story Disadvantages: Not really a typical "King" book
I bought The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon for 1 reason only - it's written by King.
This book is no ordinary "run of the mill" horror by Kind, this book is written much in the fashion of Richard Bachman and is just as much a "heart in your mouth adventure" as it is a classic example of Survival Horror at it's very best.
Without giving too much away this story follows a young girl (about 9 yrs old) who gets lost whilst hiking through the woods with ... ...from the rescue teams search area, death looks more and more inevitable and you really do feel for the main character through her seemingly endless struggle.
Again, this book is written very much in the style of Bachman rather than King himself as it is less action packed and more a crisp description of a young girl hanging onto life by the skin of her teeth.
A great book which I recommend any King or non-King fan out there to take a look at. ...

...slow moving at times ans the story is relatively simple - little girl gets lost in the woods, will she survive? But there is something deeper within this book about the things we pin our hope upon, and how escaping reality can help you survive it. This little girl happens to have her walkman with her, and being a fan of the Rod Sox, likes to listen to the games. She even imagines that her favourite player Tom Gordon is walking with her. Advantages: Great story of a girl's fight for survival lost in the woods Disadvantages: Maybe a bit on the short side but no major Disadvantages
...Its an emotional story of the struggle for survival for a 9 year old girl, Trisha, who becomes lost in the woods whilst on a walk with her family.
Her struggle to cope with survival covers areas such as food, water and wildlife in great length and fights to tell the tale of her one saviour - Tom Gordon.
Each chapter is titled by Baseball related numbers such as Pregame, Fifth Inning and Seventh Inning Stretch which is a little element that adds ... ...you interested and absorbed in the book. This one in particular does this because its not so much fiction but more something that could happen to you.
At the end of the book is an Author's Postscript which explains the factual and fictional areas of the book. For example the woods in which Trisha gets lost in are real, in Northern New England yet the Tom Gordon he describes is real but does not hold the same facts that he does in the book it is ...

...authors, so reading this book, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was like a homecoming for me. It reminded me why I first started reading this guy's books, and it was totally gripping from the first chapter.
I think this book portrays all that everyone fears about being lost as a child, as it's written from the child's point of view (Trisha). However, instead of being childish, this book becomes darker and stranger with every turn of the page and you ... ...as if you're out in those woods with Trisha, just as scared, just as alone, and just as certain something is out there, watching and waiting....
Definitely a book to give you chills, particularly if you stay up late, when the house is dark and quiet to keep reading. ...
