Advantages Advantages Intriuging .... subtle hidden depths.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Difficult to put down .

I have long been an avid fan of Stephen king. Enjoying his use of words and his flair for knowing the secrets of human frailty and the workings of the mind . King seems to understand our most private fears . From "bumps" in the dark to Childhood threats , that even as adults we can't quite shake off. He recognises them all, shapes them and uses them to reach his audience with superb effect. I have read and in the main enjoyed his work immensely . "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon ." Is in my opinion exceptional. No hint of gratutitous violence, minimal "bad language" , this tale takes you on a ... more

Advantages Advantages Simplistic, suspenseful storytelling. Empathy with lead character.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Disturbing reading at times.

Trisha has had enough. On yet another rambling holiday with her mum and brother all she can hear is them bickering about her dad. Walking along a nature trail Trisha starts to drop further and further behind and when she stops for a toilet break in the woods manages to lose them altogether. "Good", she thinks. Unfortunately, as she tries to find her way back to the trail she ends up disorientated and deep in the woods. With no sign of the trail and only a stream to guide her Trisha starts to see horrific visions in the deep, disquiet of the woods. Are they part of her imagination or is the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Decent lead character

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not King's best work

First question - who is Tom Gordon? He is a baseball player who closes for the Boston Red Sox, so in the U.K he is almost completely unknown. Unsurprisingly, Stephen King's novel is not based around a baseball season, but a young girls desperate struggle for survival. Trisha McFarland is off on a day-trip to the woods with her mother and brother. The two are arguing as usual due to the mother and father breaking up and having to move to a new area. Trisha has had enough and so leaves the trail momentairily to have a break from the endless bickering, but as she tries to rejoin the trail, she ... more

    Advantages Advantages Something different

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not a gripping book

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is one of the strangest of Stephen Kings’ books. He moves away from the normal type of horror that he has become well known for as this on the face of it is a real fear rather than a supernatural one. While she is walking in the woods with her family, Trisha becomes separated from her mother and brother, as she has become tired of hearing them arguing but she falls too far behind and soon realises that she does not know where they are, or even where she is. In an attempt to find them she wanders deeper and deeper into the woods soon having to accept that she is ... more

    Advantages Advantages very very good

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I coveted this book from the day it came out, but only recently persuaded myself to buy it. I was in no way disapointed. The story is simple, and on reading the summary, it seemed it could drag on a bit - the story of a young girl lost in the woods. Far from this, the story became more and more compelling the further into it I got. The only character you are really involved with is Trisha, and this in itself shows how well the book is written. You never get fed up of the story through the one person's eyes, as often happens with other writers. Like with every other Stephen King book, I ... more

    Advantages Advantages Streamline plot

Disadvantages Disadvantages You won't want to put it down

This has got to be one of the shortest books that Stephen King has ever written at a mere 292 pages, however he has not scrimped on the writing style and his sheer story telling ability. As with all Stephen King books that I have ever read, you get the feeling you are actually there and can almost visualise what is happening. The story revolves around a 9 year old girl called Trisha McFarland. Her parents had got divorced a year ago, and their mother had gotten custody and moved from Boston to Southern Maine. Pete, Trishas older brother wasn't happy about this as it meant he would lose all his ... more

Advantages Advantages Not too thick so you will finish it pretty quickly.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Loads....

I brought and read this particular book a while ago; it’s not the “thickest” book I’ve ever read, little fewer than 300 pages. To say I thoroughly enjoyed this book would be a lie but it was entertaining enough to keep my interest to some degree. I had wondered before, after reading Hearts In Atlantis, whether Stephen King had lost his flair and run out of his really good ideas, and this book actually confirmed it for me. I may be wrong he may have a little something up his sleeve and just waiting for the right time to bring it out but, after reading all but three of ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap at 5.99, Very original story

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not really a typical "King" book

I bought The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon for 1 reason only - it's written by King. This book is no ordinary "run of the mill" horror by Kind, this book is written much in the fashion of Richard Bachman and is just as much a "heart in your mouth adventure" as it is a classic example of Survival Horror at it's very best. Without giving too much away this story follows a young girl (about 9 yrs old) who gets lost whilst hiking through the woods with her emotionally strained family. As she travels further & further from the rescue teams search area, death looks more and more inevitable and you ... more

    Advantages Advantages relatively short read

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow moving at times

This book is a little slow moving at times ans the story is relatively simple - little girl gets lost in the woods, will she survive? But there is something deeper within this book about the things we pin our hope upon, and how escaping reality can help you survive it. This little girl happens to have her walkman with her, and being a fan of the Rod Sox, likes to listen to the games. She even imagines that her favourite player Tom Gordon is walking with her. Also the sense of fear and of being followed runs throughout the novel, coming to a head as she stumbles out of the wood into the road... ... more

Advantages Advantages Great story of a girl's fight for survival lost in the woods

Disadvantages Disadvantages Maybe a bit on the short side but no major Disadvantages

A book that you can't put down. For Stephen King this is a classic little piece around about 290 pages long and a general price of £6.99 (paperback). Its an emotional story of the struggle for survival for a 9 year old girl, Trisha, who becomes lost in the woods whilst on a walk with her family. Her struggle to cope with survival covers areas such as food, water and wildlife in great length and fights to tell the tale of her one saviour - Tom Gordon. Each chapter is titled by Baseball related numbers such as Pregame, Fifth Inning and Seventh Inning Stretch which is a little element that adds ... more
