The Green Mile - Stephen KingWhat attracted me to this book?My recent discovery of this author and resonance with his style of writing inspired me to seek out another of his offerings. This one appealed once I had read the synopsis as the concept fascinated me and I felt a need to know what the outcome would be. When mentioning the title in conversation I had excitable responses from people who have seen the movie. My curiosity got the better of me and I am delighted that it did as King did not disappoint with this one.Synopsis…Paul Edgecombe is the chief ‘screw’ on death row. Named The Green ... more

    Advantages Advantages Emotional, tragic, epic.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some may not like plodding style.

John Coffey arrives at Cold Mountain Penitentiary ready to walk "The Green Mile" for the murder of the twin girls under his protection. Prison Guard Paul Edgecombe has a duty to ensure even the most psychopathic of murderers such as Billy "The Kid" Wharton journey along the mile towards the electric chair is a peaceful one. Why then does Paul start to doubt Coffey's guilt and what does Coffey mean when he says, "I tried to take it back but it was too late"? Stephen King's "The Green Mile" is that rarest of beasts, a novel that has a wide appeal crossing numerous genres along the way. Perhaps ... more

Advantages Advantages One of the best books around

Disadvantages Disadvantages Couldn't put it down!

I saw the film of the green mile as soon as it came out. It was made by the same people as the Shawshank Redemption, and I remembered how good that was and rushed out to see the Green Mile. My boyfriend came with me against his better judgement, as he was far more keen to see a lighthearted film, which this is NOT! However, at the end of the film, we both left the cinema saying that it was the best film we had ever seen, and that opinion still stands. This is the only film that, three days after seeing it, still cropped up in conversation, just to discus the story and how moving it was ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty of excellent reading

Disadvantages Disadvantages None, unless you went for the serialised version!

As a youngster and in my early twenties I was an avid Stephen King fan and would read his books over & over again and wait with baited breath for his next book to come out. Then his writing, for me, went a little down the pan as it were.... Delores Clairbourne, Needful Things, they weren't bad but not up his usual standard for me. And so, I went off Stephen King for a while and though I still read anything he brought out, I didn't rush out to buy them, then the first small paperback of The Green Mile came out. Personally, I saw this as a cynical way of the publishers and King himself trying to ... more

Advantages Advantages King at the peak of his "serious" fiction phase

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that I can think of...to be honest

THE GREEN MILE STEPHEN KING I remember when I first saw this movie. I loved it! Tom Hanks was Paul Edgcombe. I was also glad that I had not read the book first. Most any time a book is adapted into a screenplay they butcher it (especially Steven Kings books). Since I love to read I wanted to read this book even though I already knew the story. I was also curious to see if I would like it as much as the movie. I will say I was pleasantly suprised. The Green Mile is one book that I have now read many times and my copy is getting very careworn and dog-eared looking but it still comes out on a ... more

Advantages Advantages Wonderful Storyline, Serial Novel, a Classic!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Well...can I come back to you?

The Green Mile, a Serial Novel by Stephen King. The book comes in six parts, and it was decided the book should be one volume. I recommend you watch the Oscar Winning Film as well, Starring Tom Hanks, it is excellent, however lets talk about the book. Part 1 - The Two Dead Girls! This explosive start to the book addresses the main issue. What you look at is the murder of the two Detterick twins. One night they decide to sleep outside, their mother gives in after their consistent persuasion. The next morning they are no-where to be seen, causing alarm bells to ring around the Detterick Farm. A ... more

Advantages Advantages Thought-provoking book on an interesting subject

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for the faint-hearted

Isn’t it strange how some books start to fade as soon as the final page has been reached while others haunt the reader for weeks, months and even years thereafter? It’s over a year now since I read “The Green Mile” by Stephen King and yet the main characters have stayed with me, forcing me from time to time to give consideration to the issues that they faced, and the unresolved questions in my mind that they raised. Whenever I hear of a prisoner in the U.S. on death row awaiting their fate, I find myself thinking of the occupants of the state penitentiary in Cold Mountain in the year 1932 as ... more

Advantages Advantages A well written, intriguing story

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None for me

It had been a while since I read this book, but when I read about the death of the actor who played John Coffey I decided to re read it. I suppose knowing the end does change the experience a bit but I still found it to be as well written and full of sensitivity as when I first read it. It was written in 1996 and is another Stephen King novel set in a prison, but this time most of the story is centred around a man on death row. John Coffey has been convicted of the rape and murder of two young girls and is waiting for the time when he will be taken to the chair. When it was first written it ... more

Advantages Advantages Another great masterpiece from Stephen King

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I am amazed that Stephen King's works seem to get better and better unlike many other authors that have been around for so long. With The Green Mile now being my favourite(with IT very close behind!)I cannot wait for his next masterpiece. I watched the film before I read the book and after reading the book am impressed with how close the film and book really are. All throughout the book as I read the pages, I could hear Tom Hanks saying the words to me as he did an excellent portrayal of Paul. Paul is a prison guard on death row in the 1930's. It is written based in the present with Paul ... more

Advantages Advantages Stephen King pulls off yet another breath-taking plot

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

As I am sure everyone is aware, Stephen King has established himself as one of the most creative, and constant horror writers of the last few decades. He has released a long list of best-sellers including The Shining, The Stand, Christine and IT to name but a few. So it actually comes as quite a surprise when you read some of his lesser horror novels, like The Shawshank Redemption, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and this very outing - The Green Mile. This novel was originally released in the form of six paperbacks, and have now been put together in one volume to create the complete novel. This ... more
