Advantages Advantages A good value, excellent read.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

--THE GUARDIAN--- When I buy a paper I want one that offers great all round content. I really look forward to Saturday when I purchase the Guardian. It's just really good value. I don't really get much time these days to actually read a newspaper during the week, as I am so busy writing all the time, but I still try to find time to read a few newspapers at the weekends. My newspaper of choice for Saturday is the Guardian broadsheet. Sister newspaper to the Observer, the Guardian has been in business as a daily newspaper following the early success of the Manchester Guardian. The Guardian is ... more

Advantages Advantages Left-wing, good writers, excellent news coverage, G2

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not enough sport and far too interested in London

Every morning I follow the same pattern, after my lecture at 10:00 am, I go to the shop to pick up my 15p (student price) Guardian, read the front and back pages in that seventies style kitchen and go off to another lecture. I start reading the paper again at about 10:00 pm with the dark, gloomy Glasgow night staring at me coldly outside. In the morning I read the editorials, letters and business section at breakfast and the cycle continues... On weekdays The Guardian is my guide to what is going on in the world around me. I spend most of my life within a five mile radius, so it would be all ... more

Advantages Advantages Easily available; good value for money; soon to be in Berliner size

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite bulky due to lots of supplements; no "Northerner" section in the newspaper

I quite like The Guardian. I don't buy it every day - I mainly get it on Mondays when it has the Media supplement - but I certainly try and read the news and features on the website. I sometimes read the newspaper in the library as well. The Guardian newspaper, which is a national, daily broadsheet, began life as the "Manchester Guardian" in 1821 and it had its roots firmly in the North West until the word "Manchester" was dropped from the title in 1959. In 1961 the newspaper began to print in London. By 1964, its editorial headquarters had moved to the capital. Since then, it's had a very ... more

Advantages Advantages Not Murdoch, G2, readers' editor

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little bit London-centric

As an almost archetypal soft-left liberal do-gooding pinko, you would expect me to read the Guardian, and your guess would be right. But I think it's highly unfair to confine it to this ghetto. The paper can stand on its own merits. First, let's have a look at the paper's design. This is an area of controversy, as quite a few people dislike it, but I'm not among them. Maybe it's that I've read the paper for so long, but I very rarely have difficulty finding the items I want to read. I like the fact that the basic design has remained broadly similar for some years now - nothing annoys me more ... more

actually buying the Guardian a few years ago. I still read it because we get it at work, but I just wouldn't spend my money on it these days, despite it being the paper that probably comes closest to my own political views. Why don't I like it? Well, first of all, on a technical basis, I can't stand the layout. I find it really, really hard to read. They've tried to use all sorts of feature page design tricks like leaving lots of space and arty use of pics in the news pages, and to my mind it just doesn't work when you've got so much text and so much space, and so little to pull it into a ... more

Advantages Advantages good range of views

Disadvantages Disadvantages does conform to some stereotypes

The Guardian has a somewhat ambivalent image. The term ‘Guardian reader’ is synonymous with the sort of hand-wringing liberalism that seeks to change the ‘racist’ lyrics of ‘Baa Baa Black-Sheep’. I must admit that in my time I have been a vociferous critic of the Guardian. The purpose of this review is not to refute these criticisms- they have a basis in truth- but to detail why, despite this, the Guardian is the only newspaper that I buy on a regular basis. The Guardian’s politics are self-consciously liberal with a small ‘l’. It is not ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages News-printy hands and sheets.... agggh!

Why isn't there a Sunday Guardian? Never mind I rarely get through Saturday's on the day as there's plenty to last me. I don't get time to read the papers during the week but like to indulge at the weekend. The main section give me in-depth coverage of the current news events, in an analytical broadsheet style with good coverage of both local and international stories. The comment/editorial is thought provoking and letters amusing. Then I read the review, which I tend to skim unless something about a familiar author or playwright catches my eye. Always read Ian Mayes column though, the Readers ... more

Do not read this opinion if you are under eighteen or easily offended by what my old history teacher called “a bit of the old Anglo Saxon”. We get the Guardian just on Saturday at my girlfriend’s behest, and it’s quite good in that you get several sections for about a quid including a glossy magazine, jobs section, the normal newspaper and a couple of others. I’m just going to concentrate on three parts of this, which make the purchase worthwhile, but if you want to find out more about the rest of the paper check out the other ops or buy a copy for yourself. Advantages Advantages Smart, witty, detailed

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Yes, I am probably a quintessential Guardian reader - uni-educated smarty-pants, left-wing, suspicious of Blair, contemptuous of the Tories, and very right-on. Well, actually, I have my very prejudiced non-PC moments, but generally, the reason I like the Guardian is in the air of careful scepticism with which it approaches the world. More than any other paper, the Guardian refuses to take things at face value, and looks behind the hype and argument to have a more intelligent view. The arts pages are definitely the best of any paper, and even for a sport-phobic like me, there are some writers ... more

I only tend to buy the Guardian on a saturday due to the fact that I dont have time during the week to read a newspaper properly. The Guardian on a saturday is an enjoyable and informative read. It has an excellent main new section which gives you a wealth of up tp date and well written articles it tends to have a an unbiased slant to it. The other sections on saturday include The guide which is very handy as it is not just a TV listings book it also tell you whats on in your area including night clubs ,gigs ,art shows and things for the kids. The jobs and money section is also extremely ... more
