The Hills is Lonely is one of a set of books by this author and once you've read one you want to get them all. Miss Beckwith is sent to stay on a Hebridian island to convalesce and finds a culture far removed from her suburban life. The characters come to life vividly as does the harsh scenery. Comedy prevails throughout even at funerals you find yourself smiling at the antics of some of the locals. Her landlady Morag takes her on her visits to the ... ...with huge doses of bicarb. The rooms are smoke filled from the peat fires and you can feel your eyes smarting as she talks.
Time means nothing here - asked when the Post office opened she was told that it depended when the postwoman got her milking finished. Miss Beckwith throws her lot in with the locals to join in the milking , cutting peat and fishing out of a small boat. It could sound boring but nothing is straightforward here and simple tasks ...
