Advantages Advantages Brilliant narrative, well developed characters

Disadvantages Disadvantages I saw the film first!

Due to all of the reviews I read on here and other sites, I have an ever increasing pile of books to read. Some I anticipate more than others, and some I read just because they are the next one on the pile. 'The Horse Whisperer' fell into the latter category. I had seen the film, and actually quite liked it, so I was not sure how I would enjoy the book, especially as I knew the twists and turns of the story. I am off work at the moment, so this book had my undivided attention, and I am so glad that it did. I finished it yesterday, and I can honestly say I would read it again, as I am sure ... more

    Advantages Advantages An absorbing tale

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nil

Once in a while along comes a book that you did not intend reading, that you did not buy, that a friend of your wife popped in. Once in a while you pick up such a book, because there is nothing else to hand and start reading. Once in a while a book that you did not intentionally start reading knocks your socks off! This is such a book. The first book by Nicholas Evans, published in 1995, read by Clanmac4 last week. The Horse Whisperer is a novel with its fair share of tragedy, disappointment, anger, beauty and love, all neatly packaged in an incredibly passionate read. Now guys do not let the ... more

Advantages Advantages A wonderful read that you lose yourself in

Disadvantages Disadvantages It comes to and end

The Horse Whisperer I read this book when it first came out and it thoroughly enjoyed it, despite it making me cry quite a lot! It tells the story of a 13 year old girl who, whilst out riding her beloved horse Pilgrim, is hit by a 40 ton truck. Grace and Pilgrim survive but sadly her friend dies along with her horse (I did say it was sad). Grace loses a leg at the knee and becomes extremely withdrawn. Pilgrim is treated for his injuries but is so traumatised by the whole accident that he won't let anyone near him and turns very aggressive. Grace's mother, Annie, is a business woman and feels ... more

    Advantages Advantages Gripping

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None!

This novel is so much better than the film of it would suggest. I was moved to tears by this novel, and I think everyone will be able to relate to the characters in it. I really felt for Grace, the girl who the novel is based around, whose horse is injured, and the character of the horse whisperer himself is just beautiful. The decelopment of the mother from hard city woman to loving family mother is also beautiful. As with 'The Loop', I have found Evans to be an amazing writer, with a lot of talent. Many of his descriptive passages left me gasping for breath, and his insights into the female ... more

    Advantages Advantages Amazing, absorbing read

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't get your nose out of the book

Not just a tale for the horse lover, this book contains many different genres, from adventure to romance. Nicholas Evans has an amazing narrative talent and keeps the reader enthralled from chapter to chapter. He can describe events so you can picture them clearly in your own head and brings the characters to life. You feel their despair, love and sadness, aswell as their joy and happiness. The film does not do this book justice and I along with many of my friends were left dissapointed by the tv version of the Horse Whisperer. The story is off a young girl Grace and her horse Pilgrim. The ... more

Advantages Advantages An unforgetably moving book

Disadvantages Disadvantages At the beginning some boring chapters, but which emphasises the end

The Horse Whisperer is not only a book for horselovers, but for any human beeing on Earth. It is a story about people, about feelings, but mainly about human redemption and breaking out of the daily problems which everyone of us faces. The beginning of the book might seems a little bit irrelevant and even boring, but in the end you realise what it was emphasising the final chapters. One of the great things about the book is how each character's mind is revealed, which gives the reader a feeling of really taking part of the lifes of eachcharacter. It is really one of the best book I ever read ... more

Advantages Advantages great read, readily availible, also in film

Disadvantages Disadvantages you cant put it down, some parts not sutable for younger readers

This book is absolutely fantastic, its about a girl and her horse who rely on each other for healing when they are involved in a all to common accident when both the horse and it's rider are involved in a freak accident, in which both are severally injured. The horse has huge amounts of deep flesh wounds whilst the girl looses her leg. After the accident the girl cant bring herself to look at the horse again. But her mum seeks the help of a legendary "horse whisperer". Initially the horse whisperer refuses to take on the task but after much perseverance from the girls mother the horse ... more

    Advantages Advantages absorbing

Disadvantages Disadvantages no time for anything else until the book is finished

I've read this book about 6 times. It's one of those stories that you never tire of. I've seen the film a few times too. But, you can't beat a good book. It brought me to tears, literally, and it made me smile, literally. The first time i read it, I couldn't put it down. The second time i read it was on a "relaxing by the pool holiday", so i took it cos i knew the story, so if i didn't fully concentrate, i wouldn't miss anything. Trouble was, I couldn't put the book down AGAIN!! Having read other books by Nicholas Evans, i know his style of writing and enjoy it. You actually feel like you're ... more
