Advantages Advantages Gripping Story, In Depth Characters, Easy Read

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None for me

In my opinion the best fiction books are those that draw you into the story and that leave you feeling like you know the characters within it. However, they should also contain an element of suspense hence why I often buy a good thriller or crime fiction as opposed to getting a romantic novel. Being that I was going on holiday last week I was lent a copy of 'The House at Riverton' and whilst it did not appear to look like my usual read the front cover promised of a 'secret that would last a lifetime' which sparked my initial curiosity and left me not wanting to put the book down. History This ... more

Advantages Advantages The author cleverly teases you by insinuating that there is further revelations to come.

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that I can think of.

Once again, the 'Richard and Judy book club' does not disappoint, with this fantastic book which continuously keeps you hooked right up until the last few pages. With a fantastic use of flashbacks, this book is extremely well thought out. Moreover it cleverly teases the reader into feeling that with each chapter, there is greater intensity, mystery and revelations to come. Kate Morton has a fantastic way of making you want to carry on reading when you've reached the end of a chapter. There are a plethora of deep and interesting characters in this novel, each of whom add further intrigue to the ... more

Advantages Advantages the ending is not given away until the end

Disadvantages Disadvantages parts set in modern day

This was one of a few books I took as holiday reads, and did not disappoint. It was very easy to get into, and kept hinting at a secret which was clearly troubling the main character, so you had to keep reading in the hope that all would be revealed. It was set in two different periods, 1914 and 1999, with the same main character linking the two. I much prefered the parts of the novel set in the past, and luckily this was the majority of the novel, there were some parts of the plot set in the modern day which seemed irrelevent at the time, although with hind sight, did help to bring closure at ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to read & understand, shock twists, mystery, suspense, love.

Disadvantages Disadvantages One predictable plotline, no impact on the main shock twists though.

I must admit, I picked this book up on a whim, usually reserving my "book pennies" for a hearty tome of a fantasy novel, however, I have to say I was gripped from the outset. The plot is rich with description, taking you back to the decadent 20s with ease, and the depth of the relationship between the 3 main female characters is very compelling. As the characters develop from girlish innocence into womanhood, you are brought along with the power of a character's hindsight that touches your heart. I won't give too much away as there are twists aplently that make this book excellent, however ... more

Advantages Advantages It's easy reading and the author has a sharp eye for detail.

Disadvantages Disadvantages It can be a little slow in parts.

It's the life story of Grace. It's a tale which works on different levels, between Upstairs and Downstairs, war and peace, as the story slips between the life iof young Grace in domestic service in the house at Riverton and Grace in her 90's in a care home. It focuses on the life of the servants, the upper class family and guests and in particular the Hartford sisters. The plot revolves around a film which is being shot of the tragedies which took place at the house at Riverton involving the Hartford family and the suicide of a poet , who was once a house guest. Grace is invited, as sole ... more
