Advantages Advantages Appealing to young women and well written

Disadvantages Disadvantages Dry in places, a few annoying habits.... Oh, nothing you'd kick her out of bed for.

Dimanche, Le 4 Novembre When the TV Series of this much touted (or should that be 'pimped'?) book appeared on ITV2, I inadvertently watched a couple of episodes. The series was nothing special, just one of those will-they-won't-they romances between an ordinary boy and an ordinary girl (who happened to work in the sex trade). Easy viewing for a late night winding down, cup of hot chocolate in hand and dog on lap. So, when I saw the book in ASDA for £3.50, I thought it might be much the same. I was wrong. For a start, Belle is not simply the ordinary posh girl entering the sex trade for a bit ... more

Advantages Advantages An insight into a world most of us will never know

Disadvantages Disadvantages At least, unless the gossip is true

It’s not often that the release of a book, particularly an author’s debut, is newsworthy. In recent times every word from J. K. Rowling has made the headlines, but she’s an exception. However, it was BBC London News that first made me aware of “Belle de Jour: The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl”. As is my way, I was only half listening and paid little attention. When a friend lent me a copy of the book, I remembered where I’d heard of it before. I wasn’t aware that the book had formerly been a weblog and so went into it with no real expectations. Apart from the ones you get from ... more

Advantages Advantages Witty, entertaining, enlightening, yet easy to relate to.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Terrible ending, some non-sensical entries.

On recommendation by 'Cosmopolitan Magazine', and to give myself a well earned break from crime fiction, I decided to purchase 'Belle de Jour: Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl' (£3.99 on Amazon). Now, I'm not into the usual 'girl' books, I prefer fast-paced, action-packed, blood-spurting, crime thrillers to drop off to. But, Belle's book really tickled my fancy; for want of a better phrase. It promised to be racy, but I liked the idea that it was a true confessional, spawned from her personal blog online. As far as first lines go, Belle manages to make you laugh instantly, 'The first ... more

    Advantages Advantages Light-hearted and witty

Disadvantages Disadvantages Isn't as erotic as portrayed

I must admit the subject matter of this book isn't something that I normally would be interested in but it looked so cute, in hardback, compact and with a nice sketch of a high heeled shoe on the cover. A friend loaned me his copy as I'd never heard of it, apparently Belle, the author, has based the book on her award winning webblog in which she recorded her life over a period of months, someone then decided it would be great as a book. And so it is. Belle is a prostitute; but really she is an escort or call-girl or the even grander title; a courtesan, getting paid for her time from men; ... more

    Advantages Advantages Interesting, well written.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Apart from the fact it might not be "real", nothing.

Belle* seems like a cool girl; she's smart, has a wide range of interests, goes to the gym, drinks pints and she listens to decent music... In short, Belle is a person I could find myself being friends with (and she could bully me into going to the gym more often). Did I mention that she's also a prostitute? "Belle de Jour: The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl" covers a period in Belle's life between November 2003 and late June, 2004. In her 'diary' entries, she gives us an insight into her world. While Belle may have a titillating career, it's not the only topic that you'll read ... more

Advantages Advantages Well, it's not terrible!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit mundane

Belle de jour is an account of a high class hooker of her day-to-day life. It had started life as an on-line diary and in this book Belle has elaborated on her diary entries. It is well written, in an informal manner and as you would expect it is written in diary format which means it is the type of book you can just pick at if you have a few minutes to spare, and you won't lose the thread of the 'story'. Despite the fact that Belle is a high class prostitute, the booktends to be more about her day-to-day life, visiting her parents, lunching with friends, man trouble and things that you would ... more

Advantages Advantages well written, exciting, interesting

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Last summer I had a bit of a strange obsession with erotic literature, I blame this book lol. It was that book that started my collection, I now have too many to count. Belle de Jour is a high class escort, this memoir takes us through a years worth of eventful bookings with clients. We get to meet her regulars, friends and boyfriends. This book is quite explicit, I remember reading it for the first time whilst waiting for my partner to come out of the supermarket and quickly closing the book when he got into the car lol. The book is in the form of diary entries, you really get to know Belle ... more

    Advantages Advantages Beautifully written book

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Needed more details...

A very interesting read, not what I had imagined though! This week I bought the book Belle De Jour's 'Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl'. I missed the recent dramatisation of it on ITV2 with Billy Piper, so thought it would be great to read the story. I have mixed opinions about this book. My preconception was that it would be full of lots of descriptive scenes, with details relating to Belle working in the high class sex trade. Yes there are some, but I personally would have liked to read more sexually graphic details about her exploits in the trade than there were! So although fairly ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to read, witty and realistic approachable style

Disadvantages Disadvantages You will finish it quickly as it is hard to put down!

I absolutely loved this book.... Belle has a real talent for writing making the book humorous, incredibly easy to read and actually gives a few tips and descriptions of experiences you wouldn't get from anywhere else! I really want to make clear though, the book is NOT sleazy... when I first saw it I was intrigued but thought it may be, but it's not at all. Alongside Belle, other Call-Girls have written memoirs and books, though none so well as Belle. This book is witty, classy, honest, and really interesting to see what it's like. I also like the way she names and shames no one, people are ... more

Advantages Advantages witty, easy to read, enjoyable and better than the tv series

Disadvantages Disadvantages slight confusion due to the lack of names as to who knows what about who

I loved this book and found it a very easy read. The style of Belle's writing means she is able to write about an explicit encounter with a client one minute and then change suddenly to tell us about the horrors of her family who live up North. The story is, at times at very graphic, and some of her wilder fetishes disturbed me somewhat. I liked that Belle was proud of who she was. She understood that other people may have different opinions to her own but she considers her job to be, just that a job. I feel privaledged to have read this book and it has deffinately changed my view on ... more
