I first read this book a couple of years ago when my mother-in-law, knowing that I am an avid fan of Catherine Cookson's books, picked a copy up for me at a car boot sale. This is a well-written and moving story, set, as usual, in Tyneside and begins during the Second World War with the marriage of Annie Cooper and George ( known as Georgie) Mcabe. Everyone is suprised at Annie's descision to marry Georgie as she is a beautiful girl who was thought to have good prospects whilst Georgie is seen as a local no-hoper.
