Advantages: Great vivid world and culture created by the author. Disadvantages: Long winded, some characters are under developed.
...a city called 'Imardin', in the country of 'Kyraelia.' Like majority of the citizens, Sonea was unfortunate enough to be brought up and live in the 'Slum'. The Slum is where 'normal' people lived and those who are not Magicians. It is a poor, ruthless, corrupted and daunting place to live in.
Every year, the 'Magicians' are responsible for taking part in 'the purge'. This is an unpleasant task of clearing the streets in the Slum, such as getting ... ...parts to the society and are waste of space. Even though the people of the Slum hated this purge concept, there was not a lot they can do. Their weapons are defenceless against the mighty Magicians' power. The Magicians work incredibly well as a team and can magically produce an invisible shield to prevent them getting hurt by objects the Slum people would wish to throw at them. This is no surprise as to what the people of the Slum thinks of the ...

...immediately going out to buy the rest of the series...and this was one of them. I started reading it and I just couldn't put it down. I'd never heard of Trudi Canavan before to be honest...but now if I see one of her books I'd buy it immediately.
I was shocked to find that it's been in print for a good 2 years as I'd never heard of it before, it was flukey luck that I saw it on Waterstone's bookshelves...there appears to have been little or no advertising ... ...I thought was strange considering the quality...but that's life.

...which is always locked in the early middle ages in Europe, usually an early technology age with no gunpowder, usually the story centres around a young child who somewhere near the start of the novel discovers a strange power which then is placed under the tutelage of a mage or wizard etc etc. This book very firmly follows these prinicples, the main character is a young girl called sonea who lives in the slums of a city called Imardin, Imardin is ... ...Sonea throws a rock at the magicians and penetrates the magicians defences hitting one of the magicians and cuasing the wall to collapse. Sonea then escapes and the rest of the book is a tale of her hiding from the evil magicians in the cities underworld, catacombs, warrens whatever you want to call them. As with standard fantasy, Sonea soon develops her powers and after a few mistakes starts to become more powerful, the magicians are the ones who ...

Advantages: Very easy to read, good for both novices to the genre and those with a little more 'refined taste' Disadvantages: you will find it hard to tear yourself away.
Set in the city of Imardin within the land of Kyralia, the story centers on a young girl called Sonea and her rise from the slums to acceptance within the magicians guild.
Cut off from her aunt and uncle in the press of poor people trying to escape the yearly purge of the city, Sonea learns that some old friends may be in trouble and goes to warn them.
In doing so she becomes caught up in their less than peaceful protest at being driven from their ... ...them in throwing stones at the magicians - usually a useless gesture since they are warded against physical attack, but none are more surprised than she when her stone knocks her intended target to the ground.
This sets off a massive manhunt for the untrained magician loose in the slums because if she is not found and taught to control her newly discovered power she could destroy not just herself but take half the city with her when she goes.

Advantages: Charaters, pace, plot Disadvantages: strictly fantasy
The 'Magician's Guild' is the first book in a superb trilogy by Trudi Canavan. The story starts with the magicians of Imardin, in Kyralia, attempting to purge the slum areas of the city. It is here that the main character, Sonea, is first noticed by the guild and quickly becomes their main priority.
After becoming involved with the crowd, Sonea releases her anger by throwing stones along with her fellows at the shielded magicians. Yet the unthinkable ... ...hits her target squarely on the temple. Thus the incident provokes a city wide manhunt for the rogue magician, as, if the power within her is left untrained then she could well be a danger to herself and to the whole of Imardin.
Canavan's writing style is very engrossing and the characters are well written. The world she creates becomes wholly believable, with plot turns and character interaction adding to the lively pace of the novel. All this ...

Advantages: Easy to read whilst being fresh and engrossing. Disadvantages: Couldn't put it down.
...I was still sat on the tram, on the way home, for two minutes before I realised we'd reached the terminal. I was that engrossed.
It's not a new story, very little fantasy is, however it's well told with a fresh approach. I found myself quickly drawn in to the world. The author paints a good picture in a concise way. No Tokienesque scenic ramblings for her, a few well-chosen phrases and you're there with the characters.
This is a world in which ... ...children from the wealthy are tested for the potential to become a magician. Each year a purge of the city is undertaken by the magicians, to sweep all the 'undesirables' from the city. They achieve this by erecting a magical barrier to protect themselves and then use it to simply push their targets along, and out of the city.
In the latest purge, however, something totally unexpected happens, one of the many missiles being hurled at the barrier ...

...which caught my attention from the start and turned out to be really gripping. I definately don't agree with the opinion that it is the "weakest" of the trilogy otherwise why would i have read the other three? - it's an excellent opening to a story which had me from the start.
Also, Canavan knows how to set the scene by starting it with action that leaves you wondering what's going to happen next. It's gripping from the first five minutes, so you ...

Advantages: highly detailed characters and settings Disadvantages: not very fast paced at the beginning but picks up later on
...first intallment for a trilogy. The only thing I can think of to complain about is the fact that the beginning was a bit slow. It took a couple of chapters to get going and I prefer books that get straight to the point. There are many rich and diverse characters that include the slum dwellers and thieves and the magicians and nobles. Many people say that there are always two sides to every story and the thing I like most about this book is that it ... ...to which side your on: the magicians' or the slum dwellers'. But no matter what happens within the story, you can't help but like the magicians and want the slum dwellers to get away. Giving both sides of the story might give the reader an insight into both sides of the story for once, but it also means that you want both sides to get what they want which can never happen.
The ending of this book could have been the final ending of the story while ...

...that claim this to be the weakest of the trilogy - I'd disagree! After all, it was this book and this book alone that drove me to pick up the next installment. Canavan's style is quite simple, which helps move the story along at a good pace - and makes this a real page-turner. Each book in the series is very different and this one works excellently as not only a scene-setter but as a great adventure full of peril and excitement. I've already finished ...

Advantages: Part of an excellent, exciting series Disadvantages: This book is boring as tripe. Starts well but then goes nowhere
...well and introduces us to the new and exciting place called Kyraelia and the city of Imardin. Sonea is the main character who discovers that she is naturally strong in magical powers during the course of a riot when she injures a magician with a rock. This is the main excitement in the book and when it has finished you will find that not much happens. It is rather dull for a fantasy novel. The characters are great but so much more could have been ... ...feet with this introduction to the series. As a starter its not worth paying full price for and to be honest you may be tempted to complain to the chef but do wait just a moment until you have sampled the delights of the main course and dessert. This is the first novel in a trilogy and though weak it is an excellent series and well worth reading. Persevere and read this book because the next two books are so much better, the third in particular. ...

...is without doubt one of the best I have ever read. Set in the fantasy world of Kyralia, the detail of the background and text itself is astonishing. With its rich descriptions of the realm of Kyralia, this book draws in the reader and engrosses them in an elegant, well-written world.
