Maybe there’s something in the air; the pleasant autumnal ambience calling for a starkly contrasting texture, a balancing of Yin and Yang. Maybe I’ve got some unidentifiable illness which has rewired my brain to seek out inherently nasty things. Maybe I’m just a sad pillock with nothing better to do. Whatever; ... ...am talking, of course, about the Daily Mail’s website. Before I begin this review in earnest, I feel I should address some of my own issues. Think of yourself, dear reader, as my unpaid psychoanalyst. I guess my problem is that I hate the Daily Mail for its hatred of – well – everything, but as anyone who has read any of my rants will realise, I hate a lot of things too. This makes me a terrible hypocrite and leads me to a guilt complex and lots ...

...apologise to those who read the Daily Mail everyday as their paper of choice, this is not a reflection on you or how you see the world, but more how I view it. I am sure that deep down those that choose to read this paper have some great qualities. I will give the reporter all due credit. She was confronted with this bizarre notion, and wrote her article (Saturday 26 May) with thorough professionalism having followed her lead to its logical limit, addressing Lord Adonis himself. In turn, and in charactersitically polite and diplomatic fachion,he poured scorn on the idea.

...read my previous op on the Daily Telegraph), until recently I read the Daily Telegraph. However I found a problem with the best selling quality broadsheet in the country, and that was, that it was a broadsheet, it was just to darn big for cornflakes.

Priced at 35p was the first point up on the Telegraph, and the second being that it is a tabloid (size) meant that I could read it at the kitchen table, and still eat my cornflakes in the morning.
To my shock I found that ...

Advantages: Excellent news and sports coverage in particular Disadvantages: Lots of ads, very much geared towards Royal gossip and events
The Daily Mail is the newspaper that my family read most often because it generally delivers what it’s supposed to, i.e. news! So many of the latest tabloids seem to concentrate on celebrity gossip and sex, fine I guess if that’s what you’re into, but for me a newspaper should be just that, one that keeps you abreast of the latest news breaking world wide.
The Mail has a lot of respect in these days of tabloid journalism; the fact ... ...read for your 35 pence. The current affairs/news items usually cover a good 25 plus pages, and the whole newspaper is usually at least 75 pages in length. The sports section in particular is excellent, normally around 9 to 12 pages, and is the main reason that my husband chooses this as his daily read, he’s a sports junkie of the worst kind! Most popular sports and results are covered in depth and the soccer and Formula One sections are very ...

Advantages: A newspaper and four supplements too Disadvantages: Perhaps rather too many adverts....?
The Mail On Sunday has long been my favourite Sunday newspaper (although I do pity my poor paperboy if he has to carry many copies…with all its supplements the newspaper weighs a staggering 2lbs!) The Mail On Sunday is much more informative and entertaining than the other Sunday tabloids yet not as pompous as the boring broadsheets.
The front page, headed by a tasteful THE MAIL in black script (no red-tops here) and the royal coat of arms ... ...capitals. A narrow column on the right gives a taster of what is to be found inside the newspaper.
Page two continues the headline story and political stories, plus, for light relief, the weather forecast. The main body of the newspaper carries all the news of the week, although I have to say that The Mail does not “sensationalise” the news as some other newspapers do. I do feel that you are given the facts straight. For example, last ...

Advantages: A good level of analysis and reporting Disadvantages: The entertainment section is a bit dull and some may find the political alignment unacceptable
Does the Daily Mail have a political stance? The answer, in common with every British newspaper, is clearly yes. Does this devalue the publication? In my opinion the answer is no and I would like to give my reasoning on this as well as reviewing the content.
It is a feature of the British press that they all hold and indeed promote clear political opinions. In my view this is to be preferred over the position in many countries where the newspapers ... ...holds a conservative view of the world, this informs your reading. There can, in Britain, surely be no doubting the stance of any of the newspapers.
Moving away from the question of political bias I would like to review the actual publication. The Daily Mail has for a long time had an image as the newspaper of choice for the housewives of middle class, middle England. It is certainly true that in the past it was guilty of a rather smug complacency ...

Advantages: Well laid out, easy to read Disadvantages: More pricey than other leading tabloids
The Daily Mail has been a welcome breakfast addition in our household for as long as I can remember. The news is reliable, informative, and well presented. Redtop tabloids such as The Sun and The Mirror are full of useless showbiz gossip, whereas The Mail concentrates on "real" news.
The first issue of the Daily Mail was published on 4th May, 1896 by Alfred Harmsworth, and was an immediate success, quickly reaching a circulation of over 500,000. ... ...been no looking back.
The Daily Mail is certainly the most expensive tabloid newspaper in circulation, at 35p daily. The Sunday equivalent and the Mail's sister paper The Mail on Sunday costs £1. This may seem an extortionate price for a newspaper, but is definitely worth it. The Daily Mail is very royalist, and proud of the Royal Family, playing up on their good points and dismissing the bad points. The Mail's right wing views always add an exciting ...

My opinion that is, not the Daily Mail. Anyway, here are my points for and against it...
The Mail (35p) has some quite interesting, informative articles, as well as a daily crossword and a full page of other puzzles, it has 2 pages of letters, an (unintentionally) hilarious column called 'You're a Genius' featuring invariably useless and bizarre ideas sent in by the public on how to improve things (for example today a lady wrote in suggesting that ... ...clothes in!), there is also the Questions and Answers page in which people write in with questions they'd love to know but don't know how to find out, for example somebody asked which language would be the easiest for an English speaking person to learn (the answers were Esperanto, Romanian and Frisian).
On Saturdays it costs 50p and includes a travel section and has a glossy TV guide magazine. On Sunday it costs £1.00 and includes seperate sports, ...

Consumer Opinion on The Daily Mail
Over the years, I’ve have tried a vast cornucopia of daily newspapers. These have ranged from the Daily Record, to the Scotsman and the Daily Express.
The Daily Record was a real thorn in my side as the amount of news in it was falling on a daily basis, and it was readable in just over 5 minutes. I liked the Scotsman, as the news content was fantastic, but the only downside was its sheet size. I was finding ... ...a cup of coffee with the other. The Daily Express, was along the same lines as the Daily Record, and I wasn’t paying nearly 40p for another thorn to be implanted in my side.
One morning on my way to work, I walked into my local newsagent to see what other newspapers there were. I knew about the Sun and the Star, purely by the third page, and I decided immediately that I would rather read the Daily Record than buy either of them. At the news ...

Advantages: No 1 Newspaper Disadvantages: Sport Section not as good as the Sun
The Daily Mail is by far the most popular and widely read quality daily newspaper. It is well written and presented. It follows the standard format , major news at the front & sport at the back. Whilst the Sport isn't as good as in the Sun , it is difficult to be pursuaded to buy that Newspaper in front of the Mail when for everything else The Mail is head and shoulders in front. Even though I work for a major High Street Bank , I do like the stand they take to protect some customers. The errors made by the Bank's in some instances are frightening. Buying the Mail on Sunday could mean you are still reading it mid week as there is such a lot to read and all for £1.00.
The paper itself is 128 pages of news, gardening, travel, winter sports, travel log, holidays abroad and at home, sports mail and cartoons. If I went into each of these individually this opinion could take as long as the mail paper itself to read.
Like all Sunday papers and week day come to that, it does come with its fair share ... ...which go straight into the bin but anyuone who buys a paper expects this nowadays.

Advantages: Very reassuring for closet Tories, xenophobes and racists. Disadvantages: If you're not a white middle-class Tory male, you're not coming in.
If I had to put the Mail into a comfortable bracket, it'd be the one reserved for ninety year-old Tory peers and retired schoolteachers from Kent. The three sit quite nicely together, spouting their utter drivel at anyone who should care to listen.
The frankly disgusting aspects of the Mail are numerous. I try, in my opinions, to be as objective as possible while still recounting my own experience, but I am afraid in this instance I could only live ... ...paper for the tripe it is.
Primarily, it's fixation with the past is ridiculous. It seems to be living in a world where wives stay at home to bring up the children, husbands (for there are no illegitemate offspring) go out to work from 6am to 11pm every day to earn an honest living, and the Conservatives rule over this idyllic land with only the hush-hush deviancy of Lord Cranbottom smearing the picture. And even that is a source of much good humour ...
