Advantages Advantages A good enjoyable, free flowing book

Disadvantages Disadvantages May not appeal due to the genre, but dont let that put you off

It would seem that a lot of my recent opinions are coming about after conversations with various other members. And it was one such conversation that I realised that I still hadn't done an op on another of my favourite Grisham books, Rainmaker. With the number of books Grisham has now written and the speed at which he seems currently to be writing I am starting to fall behind in catching up with the latest books due to my discovering new authors kick. However Grisham will remain a firm favourite and its books such as this that will keep me coming back to Grisham's work. A former lawyer he ... more

How many of us have brought life insurance, health insurance, and any other insurance in case the unthinkable happens. The world today doesn’t allow you to leave things to chance, and to protect your loved ones, you put your trust in big insurance companies who promise to cover you should a tragedy strike your family. Well imagine paying for a medical policy and then a tragedy does happen, all you should have to worry about is when that person is going to get better. But what would happen if all hope is shattered when the insurance company denies you the right to claim. John Grisham has ... more

Part of the appeal of John Grisham's humongously popular novels has always rested in their grabby beginnings, their twisty, if disorganized, plots. Grisham has never excelled at creating psychologically nuanced characters or used anything but the most pedestrian prose. "The Rainmaker," lacks even his patented narrative hooks. The novel gets off to a plodding, colourless start, decelerates into a wholly predictable tale of David and Goliath, and finishes up with a manic flurry of ridiculously implausible events including, in the last 30 pages alone, a crucial court decision, a sudden murder ... more

Advantages Advantages entertaining - don't have too think too much

    Disadvantages Disadvantages bit predictable

The rainmaker is a book by John Grisham and like most (if not all) of his books are based on the law industry. This book is based on a young lawyer called Rudy Baylor. The book starts out when Rudy is just finishing law school and is life is not going according to plan. Initially, Rudy is going through a rough time, struggling to finish school, his prospects of employment after school seem low, he's in lots of debt, no girlfriend, few friends and no family to support him either. Initially when I started reading this book I did not like the main character at all. He seemed selfish, annoying and ... more

Yet another brilliant read from Grisham. This as usual is a story about a lawyer. This time, he is a young law graduate Rudy Baylor who is assigned to two interesting cases. He brings them to his new job. However, the main company has bought out his small firm and are representing the opponent in one of his cases. He then trawls the town for employment and finds work with an underground team of ambulance chasers. Rudy works with a top con man, Deck who shows him the way but Rudy has other more morale ideas and a woman he encounters. ... more

Advantages Advantages Very good read, long book

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Difficult beginning

This book is another John Grisham lawyer book, and as usual, it is well written and very detailed, and allows yourself to loose yourself in the plot. It is centered around Rudy Baylor, a new law graduate who stumbles across a case where an insurance company refuses to pay out for a bone marrow transplant for a victim of luekemia. The story is of how they take the company, Great benefit to court, and Rudy and his partner, Deck, who isn't even a qualified lawyer take on the big firms at their own game. This provides great satisfaction to Rudy, as Tinley Britt, the lawyers representing Great ... more
