I think mainly it is the author's fantastic, witty writing style, and also the fact that, though they might be pretty depressing, the stories are still fantastic!
The three stars of the stories are the Baudelaire children. 14-year-old Violet is a brilliant inventor, 10-year-old Klaus is incredibly intelligent, and 2-year-old Sunny likes biting things (this is a lot more important that it sounds).

Advantages: Fast moving plot Disadvantages: Too Depressing at times
Within these pages the Baudelaire children endure a car accident, a terrible smell, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp and the reappearance of someone they hoped that they would never see again.

...back in full force with the fantastic, and even more depressing follow up to 'The Bad Beginning'. Book the Second is written with the same wit and style as Book The First, and is even more gripping!

The book starts with the orphan's in Mr. Poe's cramped up car driving down Lousey Lane with the Stench off horseradish Violet tied her hair up in a bun meaning she was thinking of inventions to stop the stench geting to their noses.
