... I think mainly it is the author's fantastic, witty writing style, and also the fact that, though they might be pretty depressing, the stories are still fantastic! Advantages: Fast moving plot

...back in full force with the fantastic, and even more depressing follow up to 'The Bad Beginning'. Book the Second is written with the same wit and style as Book The First, and is even more gripping! The start of the book sees the Baudelaire orphans taking a much needed break from being completely miserable, as they are taken to live with their mad Uncle Monty, who has a snake fetish. ...is much more devious than the first. The book starts with the orphan's in Mr. Poe's cramped up car driving down Lousey Lane with the Stench off horseradish Violet tied her hair up in a bun meaning she was thinking of inventions to stop the stench geting to their noses.
