When all questions of space, time, matter and the nature of being have been resolved, only one question remains - "Where shall we have dinner?" "The Restaurant at the End of the...
more...Universe" provides the ultimate gastronomic experience, and for once there is no morning after to worry about. This is volume two in the Trilogy of five. Excerpted from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. Copyright ? 2002. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved." In the beginning the Universe was created. This had made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. Many races believe that it was created by some sort of god, though the Jatravartid people of Viltvodle Six believe that the entire universe was in fact sneezed out the nose of a being called the Great Green Arkleseizure. The Jatravartids, who live in perpetual fear of the time they call the Coming of the Great White Handkerchief, are small blue creatures with more than fifty arms each, who are therefore unique in being the only race in history to have invented aerosol deodorant before the wheel. However, the Great Green Arkleseizure Theory is not widely excepted outside Viltvodle Six and so, the Universe being the puzzling place that it is, other explanations are constantly being sought. For instance, a race of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings once built themselves a gigantic supercomputer called Deep Thought to calculate once and for all the Answer to the Ultimate Question of life, the Universe and Everything. For seven and a half million years, Deep Thought computed and calculated, and in the end announced that the answer was in fact Forty-two-and so another, even bigger, computer had to be built to find out what the actual question was.And this computer, which was called Earth, was so large that it was frequently mistaken for a planet-especially by the strange ape-like beings who roamed its surface, totally unaware that they were simply part of a gigantic computer program."

Restaurant and galaxy book
Review of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams by lovelyben

Advantages: funny story, very well written
Disadvantages: no disadvantages

...because I feel they are the chief books of Trampers to the galaxy. The CBOTTG are books that when the words are read the writing marks you in a thrilling and funny way. I never cause an almost terrible thing to happen like the reading of the Hitchhiker books to pass from my life. That is a most unverifiable thing I would be doing. Although the writer of this book was reputed to be a crotchety writer, I found his ideas were very substantial. His ... Read review

Only one question remains...
Review of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams by Sam_Garland

Advantages: Hysterical in places and finding out the question to the ultimate answer...
Disadvantages: A tendency to wander off the plot(s) at times.

...have dinner?' If you haven't read the Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, the short main character list below will be very useful for understanding the following review; Arthur Dent - Last male Human Being and hero of the Hitch-Hiker books. Tricia McMillan - Last female Human Being and only rational, intelligent person on the Heart of Gold. Nicknamed Trillian. Ford Prefect - Arthur's best friend (who turns out to be an alien very early on in ... Read review

If the answers 42 whats the question
Review of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams by brownp1

Advantages: very funny
Disadvantages: no

What to do after producing the cult book of the decade? An interesting dilemma faced by the late great Douglas Adams after writing The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and the only solution is to follow it up with more of the same. 1st impressions aren’t as startling as HGttG as the cover of my well thumbed 1st edition paperback is based on the TV series in that it looks like a starfish made of cheap fluorescent lighting on a black background. ... More Hilarity
Review of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams by dom00

Advantages: Extremly funny
Disadvantages: Too Short

This is the second book in the Hitch-Hikers guide to the Galaxy series. It continues directly on from the first book with them planning a trip to the restaurant at the end of the universe. They do get there eventually but not until a bizarre series of adventures which includes dead relatives, flying office buildings and sentient elevators. Adams is always incredibly witty, humourous and a constant source of new and bizzare ideas. It works because ... Read review

Adams at his Best
Review of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams by Marcia

Advantages: Loses a rainy day
Disadvantages: If read at bedtime be prepared to have to finish it.

After reading the first book in the series I had to continue. Not only did this book equal, but in my view surpassed, Hitchhikers Guide. With Adams usual descriptive writing I found myself engrossed from cover to cover (and a few mornings I think the propped open eyes may have been visible). A must read for all Adams fans - do it right now!!! I myself will be rushing out to buy the next one in the series to see if it gets even better, although I ... Read review
