I adore the sandman series and having read all of them i still think that Seasons of Mists ranks as one of the best. The plot revolves around Dreams attempt to release a former lover from Hell. He ends up being gifted the key to the gates of hell and has to dispose of it. The book is so good because it introduces characters that later on play a major part in Dreams death. Disadvantages: it's a long way into the series so isn't an ideal place to start.
