Advantages Advantages A fine read that builds the tension upto a horrifying climax

Disadvantages Disadvantages Disturbing and graphic details of murders of children

The Secret Of Crickley Hall is James Herberts latest horror thriller and should not disappoint but it should disturb you as it concerns the deaths of eleven young children and their teacher during a catastrophic flood in Hollow Bay during the 2nd world war. The book begins where children are hiding and cowering in fear, knowing that something terrible is coming for them and knowing there is no way of escaping this terror, then the screaming begins... Crickley Hall is an imposing building that has been uninhabited for a long time and has a dark past, a past that most villages will not talk ... more

I have read a couple of James Herberts books before and knew he was a great writer i bought this book for £3.75 at Asda after my mum said she would like the book and i thought it sounded a great book to read. Advantages Advantages well worth the read, gripping yet origional ending.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slow to start

this book does take a while to get into yet i have found most of james herberts writings to be the same, do not expect to just pick this up and be interested straight away as it will just not happen and will take a few chapters worth before it starts getting interesting, despite the fairly slow start this book gripped me to the very end, herbert truely knew what to do when it came to keeping the readers interest, the book is generally about a family who move into a house, which they didn't realize was haunted by war orphans sent to the house to be schooled and looked after by the occupants ... more

Advantages Advantages Keeps you guessing till the end

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

This was a book I got for Christmas, as I was ill over Xmas it was the perfect tonic and excuse to stay in bed. A book well worth reading with the usual brilliance expected from the author. The beginning of the story has so many possibilities that you are kept guessing as to what could be occurring within Crickley Hall to cause the weirdness. There is a vast array of characters and depending upon your view of life it will be a personal choice as to whom the lead character within the novel really is. The middle to end of the book is quite sad, and the fact that this might have actually happened ... more
