As my daughter is such a lover of books, I am always buying her more for her collection when I am out shopping, or through The Book People. One day I received a brochure through the post from The Book People and in it was a set of books which included The Gruffalo which is one of my little girls favourite books. I decided to purchase the set as they were all from the creators of that fantastic book so I thought that my daughter would love them. One of the books in the set was The Smartest Giant In Town and is written by the brilliant Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The book ... more

As you may have already guessed I have been reading through all of Julia Donaldson's children's books and the more I read the more I love. The Smartest Giant in Town is a tale of great kindness that was rewarded and it is uplifting for any child to think that they too will be rewarded in a small way for their kind acts. The book title is especially clever, the Giant is smart in more than one ways than one. Axel Scheffler has given us a larger than life Giant who lives in a very colourful town, the animals , wildlife and countryside in the book all draw the eye and give so much pleasure to the ... more

THis book is written by Julia Donaldson who is best known for writing the Gruffalo stories. In this book we meet George who is a giant and is not generally known for being smart - in fact he is the scruffiest giant in town! He does get a bit fed up of being thought of as scruffy though, so one day decides to do something about it. He discovers a new shop full of smart clothes so he buys himself a new shirt, trousers, belt, tie, shoes and socks. He is so pleased he dresses in them immediately, leaves his old clothes at the shop and sets off home. However, on the way home he meets a number of ... more

How come we got it? ------------------------------- When we were living in Poland there came a point where we got fed up with reading the same English books again and again to our daughter. What else to do but log on, take advantage of the free UK postage over orders of 25 GBP and order 50 pounds worth of children's books from Amazon to be delivered to Granny's address. They arrived at the UK address after a few days and were with us in Poland after another 10 days or so. 50 GBP buys you actually quite a few children's books and with rationing the excitment of getting out a new one could be ... more

George was a giant the scruffiest giant in town.... and so it begins George is a bit down about his apearance so he goes and buys some new clothes. On his way home he meets a whole host of animals with different dillemas and helps them out with by donating an item of clothing. For instance George meets a mouse whose house has burned down and kindly donates a shoe for her and her babies to live in. The book its self is very nice to look at and at A4 size easy for toddler to handle. I have also found it to be very durable (my son stuck stickers on the inside pages and they peeled off easily ... more

Advantages Advantages Short sweet story with a moral!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing really

The Smarted Giant in Town is a simple and endearing story of a Giant who wears old rags and longs to dress smartly. After buying all new clothes from his "local giant shop" he goes for a stroll through the village, meeting all walks of life in all states of distress along the way. Piece by piece he gives his clothing away to help others; his ties keeps a giraffe's neck warm, his shoe becomes a house for a single mother mouse and her children and his sock a sleeping bag for an ill-prepared fox out camping. Of course, he gets cold and starts to long for his clothes again. Finding the shop closed ... more

The Smartest Giant in Town - Julia Donaldson This was the first of Julia Donaldson's books that I read. It wasn't straight away a favourite but it has definitely grown on me. It's a story about a friendly giant who one day decides that he doesn't want to be scruffy anymore so visits a new shop in town and kits himself out with a whole outfit. Unfortunately on his way home he meets a series of animals that have problems which he finds he can solve with the help of him new clothes. By the end of the book he has almost none of his new clothes and he makes his way back to the shop to get some more ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fanatastic story!

Disadvantages Disadvantages You may have to read it again(and again, and again.....)

George is fed up of being scruffy and wants to smarten up his act. He invests in a dapper new wardrobe and off he goes. On his way, he meets several individuals who have had some misfortune happen upon them. In true benevelont fashion, George helps them out of their predicament by donating an item of clothing. By the end of the story, he has given away all his clothes, but gained many friends. A true falling-down- trousered philanthropist! This story is fab! It is everything a good book for children should be- the repetition and rhyme allow children to participate actively in the storytelling ... more

Advantages Advantages A super 'catchy' tale for parents and children

Disadvantages Disadvantages Perhaps a bit too popular with the kids!

My boys received this book as a gift some time ago and it quickly became a firm family favourite. A rhyming story of a scruffy giant who purchases some smart new clothes, helps his animal friends in sticky situations by sacrficing his new garments along the way. Touchingly, they all go on to show the giant how much they appreciate his generousity, which is a nice example for children. We felt the friendly characters are illustrated brilliantly in this easy to read story. Perhaps the only down side is it becomes 'too much of a favourite' and becomes repetitive night after night!! If you have ... more
