Advantages: Good, well structured book with case studies and food lists plus recipes Disadvantages: Difficult to stick to
I came across the South Beach Diet a few years ago as the book was a freebie on a magazine. I'd previously heard of the Atkins diet and thought it far too extreme for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm keen to lose weight but cutting out specific food groups indefinitely isn't something that I would be able to sustain or that imagined would be particularly healthy - not to mention some of the side effects that I had seen on TV and in magazines. I really likes all the information at the front of this book about how the body functions and uses its food to create energy - the author is a highly respected cardiologist, but he speaks in everyday language so its easy to understand and he adds in great case study stories. Unlike the Atkins diet which is high protein and fat, with minimal fruit or veg, this diet encourages the use of low fat dairy and healthy fats (such as olive and fish oils). The diet is also high in vegetables.
