    Advantages Advantages Interesting characters, very well written

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Characters with similar names due to family ties

    Ever since coming across The Complete McAuslan, I've slowly been reading more and more George MacDonald Fraser books, until now they had all been fictional but based on history. The Steel Bonnets is a heavy historical book about the border reivers, full to the brim with knowledge, dates and real-life characters with similar names, it's a little hard to get into at the beginning. As a borderer himself, George McDonald Fraser is undoubtedly the best person imaginable to write such a book, his attention to detail is superb and you can see it's a subject he is greatly interested in.
