Samantha Sweeting, the main character in this book, is a top lawyer for a firm called Carter Spink, in The City. The story begins with her visiting a beauty therapist and filling in a health questionnaire. It is amusing and immediately allows you to relate to the main character. Samantha is stressed at work and is desperately trying to make partner at the firm. Being a top lawyer Samantha has no time for cooking or cleaning and you ... ...the mod cons in her home, but with no time to educate herself in the use of them. Fairly quickly in the story on the day that the partners are due to be announced, it becomes apparent that Samantha has made a huge and very costly mistake and rather than stay and face the music, she does the only sensible thing and runs away.
Samantha ends up asking for directions at a big house, where (as luck would have it) the owners are looking for a new housekeeper. ...

This is the first Sophie Kinsella book I've read and certainly won't be the last! My husband officially thinks I'm barmy as there are a number of scenes within this book that I just couldn't help laughing out loud whilst reading (not something I do regularly!). Sophie Kinsella's style of writing is such that it is a very easy read yet gripping and I just couldn't put the book down. Advantages: Easy to read and really likeable characters Disadvantages: The story is implausible but that doesn't really matter
...of my favourite authors at the moment is Sophie Kinsella. She lives in London and before she became a celebrated writer she worked as a financial journalist. Her background came in very handy when she wrote her shopaholic novels in which the main character is in fact a financial journalist. However she could also to some extent make use of her background when she wrote “The Undomestic Goddess”. Plot

This book is about Samantha Sweeting who is a top lawyer based in London and employed by a large law firm called Carter Spink. Samantha is determined to become Partner and works over 66 hours a week, pulls all nighters and even works weekends. Advantages: Comedy and Romance Disadvantages: Not for those who want a really in-depth plotline
The Story
The novel is about a young lawyer called Samantha whose main aim in life is to achieve partnership in her firm. She lives and breathes work, partly because it's what she thrives on but also because there is no time for anything else. She goes to work early and gets home late. Her flat is just a place to eat her takeaway meals and catch a few hours sleep before returning to work again. On the day when she is due to hear about making partnership ... ...which is going to cost the firm a massive amount of money. Deciding that her career is over she jumps on a train not knowing where it is going and finds herself getting off at a village station in the middle of nowhere. ...was quite looking forward to the next book by Sophie Kinsella. I have read all of her previous novels. Saying that what will trying to save up at the mo I didn't really fancy shelling out £16.99 RRP for the hard back copy of the book which had been released. So I reserved a copy from the local libary and although it took a while for a copy to become free and make it's way to me it was well worth the wait.
So 'The undomestic goddess' is the sixth ... ...her other books which include the 'shopaholic' series:

...I found this lying around the house (I believe it's my Mum's), and I had a long train ride coming up, I decided it was worth a read.
It's a very funny, very readable book that I read completely in the two hours it took to get from Birmingham to London.

Samantha is the typical spinster stereotype who would rather choose her career over a personal life, or even happiness.
Coming from a family of lawyers, she really hasn't had much choice but to end up in the career ... ...as we meet her in the beginning of the book. She's highly stressed, but the possibility of making partner in her top law firm keeps her working harder, striving for the next step up the ladder.
What could possibly be more perfect for this woman, and how could a plot develop from this?

...instantly hooked with her work! The Shopaholic series was great too, so imagine my joy when I find out she's written another book!
There are 2 versions of the book: a hardback edition and a paperback. The hardback seemed a little heavy and way too big to fit in my workbag and read on the train so I waited and got hold of the paperback. It's meant to be about £6.99 but I managed to get it for £3.50 (or around that) in Tesco. I bet if you looked on ... ...a rose in front. It's the perfect size for fitting in your handbag for those long train journeys home from the City, for relaxing on the beach or for reading in the bath with chocolates and candles!
