    Advantages Advantages Written by Tad Williams, a great and imaginative author. A mixture of darkness and light.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacks emotional punch and depth. Not as good as it should be.

    If you're a fan of the malevolent fairy gang, then this might be the story for you. Tad Williams is an amazing writer, who wrote some of the best fantasy ever published ('Memory, Sorrow and Thorn'), but as far as I'm concerned this book could have been written by someone who'd never met the author of that brilliant trilogy. There are great moments, vivid descriptions and fantastical twists, but on balance this is much more of a 'miss' than a 'hit'. The subject matter and main protagonist are uninspiring and the intimacy that his better books create seems lacking here. I'd still read it again ... more
