Advantages Advantages Good writing style, very descriptive and involving

Disadvantages Disadvantages When's it going to end?

I've loved fantasy novels since I read The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King, in the early eighties. From that one book I have now collected nearly two hundred fantasy novels of which I rate Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series one of the best, easily bettering Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The Wheel of Time consists of nine novels at present (the rumour is that it will finish at thirteen). Book 1 - The Eye of the World - 1990 Book 2 - The Great Hunt - 1990 Book 3 - The Dragon Reborn - 1991 Book 4 - The Shadow Rising - 1992 Book 5 - The Fires of Heaven - 1993 Book 6 - Lord of Chaos - 1994 Book ... more

Advantages Advantages Extremely detailed, interesting storyline, lots to read.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very, very long, delay between books, occasional unrealistic portraels of characters and similarities of others.

This is a series of books that I kept hearing about how great they were, eventually I decided I had to see if the books really were as good as people said and bought the first one. After reading the first book I felt that the series deserved all the hype it had received, the story was interesting and I was truly drawn into the world, however many of the future books just don't live up to the first few. --Storyline-- The storyline is complex and has a large number of themes running at once, because the series is quite long and people won't want future books spoilt if they plan to read them I ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent guide to the history and geography of the 'Wheel of Time', Adds to the knowledge of the books

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor illustrations, Not for those who haven't read the novels

Having only started reading the Robert Jordan ‘Wheel of Time’ series and thoroughly enjoying it I decided to buy the compendium of the history, geography and sociology of the world where Jordan’s books are set that accompanied the novels. The book illustrates how the world in which the books has been shaped to the current time and is excellent in illustrating what is not fully explained. The compendium itself is split into three sections. The first section chronicles the history of the world from the Age of Legends. The style of writing is that of someone actually living in ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fantastic Fantasy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too Tolkien-esque at times

Few critics and fans are able to agree on The Wheel of Time. Some say this series grows more exciting with each new volume. Others say that the first three or four books held promise and excitement before the series descended into a complex mess of boredom. Some view the female characters as being so strong that they believe Robert Jordan is actually a woman writing under a pen name; others say the women inhabitants of Randland (as fans refer to it) are dull caricatures of feminist extremists. Some fans are so obsessive that they've set up large-scale role playing games and sites of worship ... more

Advantages Advantages Great, addictive high fantasy

Disadvantages Disadvantages totally the cheesiest thing you'll ever read

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is a 13 part series, of which 9 books have been released so far. It should be noted, that at the time of writing, I have only read 5 of these books. Ok. Now, let's do a leetle expurriment, shall we? I'll say some words, and you think of another word. i) Fantasy ii) Prophecy iii) Young Man on a Daring Quest iv) Good vs Evil v) Epic Now, let's see which of the following matched your answers: i) Geek ii) Cliche iii) See 2 iv) " v) Boring Ok, now, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS?! you all cry, while reaching for broken bottles. Advantages Advantages Keeps you interested.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A very long series

I only started to read this set of books recently. It was a daunting task being faced with eight books ( the ninth one has only just been released ), each three inches thick. However, I was assured by my better half, that they were well worth the read, and I haven’t been disappointed. I am new to fantasy books, I started with the obligatory “Hobbit” & “Lord of the Rings” and though I found these a good read they were hard going at times. The “Wheel of time” series has kept me gripped with it’s in depth look at characters and constant surprises ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very detailed, engaging

Disadvantages Disadvantages very detailed, long, drawn out

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again."(The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan and Teresa Patterson, Tor, 1997, page 13) This is how every Robert Jordan book begins in this series. I happen to own the hardback edition of this book, a nice reference, and coffee table book, for anyone who enjoys this series. This series, centered around a no-body named Rand Al’Thor, and his closest friends, Mat Cauthan, Perrin Aybara, Nynaeve ... more

Advantages Advantages Complex characters with interesting take on the good versues evil theme

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as good as his previous work

The book is an enjoyable read for those people who haven't read much of Robert Jordan's work but to be really honest this book and its companion, Winters Heart (Book 9 of the Wheel Of time series) is basically a filler, something for fans of Robert Jordan to read whilst he sorts out what he wants to write in the next installment. If someone who has never read a Wheel of time book reads it, then it will be an acceptable read but with plenty of questions such as 'who is that person?','what is his/her role in this situation?' The book closes a few unanswered questions about Mat,the Daughter of ... more

Advantages Advantages A great book in a great series

Disadvantages Disadvantages A lot of reading to get this far

Well then, book eight at last. Is it a gripping end to a masterful series? No. Though not because it isn't gripping but because it isn’t the end. When I first started reading Robert Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” cycle it appeared as if book eight was the end, how wrong I was. For instead of telling a story of an individual or an epic quest, it is the tale of a world spun in layers of intrigue and plot. Of course this requires a lot of words. If you have made it as far as book eight though, you must find this a good quality. “The Path of Daggers” carries on Jordon’s epic, and will not disappoint ... more

Advantages Advantages Great story, unique style, fantastic characters and concepts

Disadvantages Disadvantages Will it ever end?

Wow. The Wheel of Time is a triumph for the fantasy genre: a veritable tour de force. Once you pick this series up there is no letting go. A warning should be issued at the start of each of the installments, warding of the dangers of obsession (there are many.many obsessed fans circulating on the numerous Wheel of Time websites). Essentially the plot revolves around an eternal battle between good and bad. Yes this is an exceptionally common concept, but the scale and scope of Jordan's interpretation is unparalleled. The Dark One was imprisoned at the beginning of time by the Creator, but is ... more
