Advantages Advantages small price - £99 a year, good technical support

Disadvantages Disadvantages constant engaged tones, small cut off times, etc.

UPDATE 26/7/2002 - When visiting TFI's website today, I've noticed that their service has been offline for over a month. They are in dispute with their telecoms provider (NTL) and it's looking as if it could be going to court. All I can say is, stay well away from this ISP. I signed up for The Free Internet in November 2000, when they were still owned by Excite. At first, I thought that our Internet connection was broken before we had even connected. We got engaged tones often, making it very hard to connect. When you are a member of The Free Internet, constant engaged tones are something that ... more

Advantages Advantages Low cost - high service

Disadvantages Disadvantages IT DOESN'T WORK WITH A CABLE PHONE

I have to confess that, apart from an occasional problem we have been quite satisfied with the service provided by The Free Internet so it is with a slight regret that we have been forced to change provider. Hopefully our new provider will be even better – look out for the forthcoming opinion! First let me explain our experience of The Free Internet. I left work at the end of January 2000 and started to use the Internet to contact keep in contact with friends via e-mail. I didn't do much in the way of surfing but I had a bit of a look around. The first telephone bill since my leaving ... more

    Advantages Advantages cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages 1 hour cut off, unreliable, £1/min support line

Update: TFI are no more. They couldn't even go out of business in style. For over a month they told us our service was unavailable due to a dispute with NTL, and that their lawyers were dealing with it. All prepaid accounts have been taken over by V21, but since they seem equally unreliable, and we were nearly at the end of our prepaid year anyway, we've decided to try our luck with Tiscali instead. I signed up with TheFreeInternet about 15 months ago after seeing their TV advertisment. At the time it cost £50 for a year's "free" access to the internet, which seemed to be the cheapest around ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheaper than most 24/7 providers. Reliable. 56K modem access throughout UK

Disadvantages Disadvantages One hour limit per session. Tag line on your e-mails. You must buy one year in advance. Not for commercial use.

"The Free Internet" (TFI for short) is anything but free. They offer a 7 day, 24 hour internet connection which works out at £8.33 per month (all inclusive). This is still cheaper than many of the more high profile providers I've seen. The catch is you are disconnected after one hour on line. But you simply reconnect again. You're also chopped off after 30 minutes if there's been no activity through your modem. Mega downloads lasting longer than an hour are handled most conveniently using something like Real Download which allows you to pause while disconnected, then resume later where you ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's FREE

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes difficult to connect

The Free Internet is a fairly good service really, you pay £90 a year, and get free calls at all times, which I think is the best deal about, at least the best deal with no catches, like having to make a certain amount of local calls a month in order for you to be allowed to use the free internet access. You can have free access 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, all for £90, so really you can’t argue with that, especially if you’re online a lot. They have good support services if you get into problems, and their website is easy to use. Connecting to the Internet becomes difficult at ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap 24/7 access, speedy connections, free email tech support.

Disadvantages Disadvantages 1 hour cut offs, no news server at the moment, £1 per min tech support by phone.

TFI is a one off payment of £89.99 for the first year, and then £89.99 per annum thereafter. I signed up for TFI on a recommendation and I am pleased with the service on the whole. Sign up procedure is a bit long winded, but easy to understand. Once signed up you must use the supplied dialler software to connect, but it does not use up noticeable system resources so that's ok. The speed of the connections given are very fast, much faster than another subscription service I used to use, and I believe faster than my other pay per minute service that I use now and then. Technical support by phone ... more

Advantages Advantages 24/7 access if you can get connected

Disadvantages Disadvantages 1 hour cutoff, poor customer services, erratic connection

Around New Year I was watching the television, amongst the normal poor seasonal TV and adverts for Furniture and Carpets, one advert caught my eye. This advert was for a company called The Free Internet. It wasn’t a particular flashy or attention grabbing advert and didn’t even have an annoyingly catchy slogan or jingle. The thing that awake me from my post Christmas food and alcohol induced slumber was that it offered something that I had been looking for since the rather large phone bill I had recently received. That thing was a pre-pay unmetred 24-hour Internet service provider ... more

Advantages Advantages only 90 quid for the whole year

    Disadvantages Disadvantages some server problems

It was perhaps a bit of a risk I (I mean DAD) was taking in signing up for this. For those of you who don’t know, TFI (the Free Internet) is an ISP with a yearly subscription charge of £89.99 (works out at about 25p a day). For that 90 quid, you get unlimited 24/7 access. It did actually used to be even cheaper at £49.99, but if you compared my old phone bills with that 90 quid, it’s still an amazingly good deal. They request this payment by either visa or MasterCard, and it’s done over a secure link. GOOD THINGS ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unlike most of the other ISP’s, with TFI ... more

Advantages Advantages 0800 access to the internet 24/7, supports ISDN

Disadvantages Disadvantages 1 hour cut off, no online gaming and video streaming

After months and months of a promise of 24/7 internet access with my previous isp Eurobell which never started I decided to sign up for The free-internet after seeing the ads on the TV and too much searching on the net for other 24/7 isp's that would allow me to keep my existing phone company (most you had to be a BT customer). At the time of signing up to The free-internet who were in conjunction with the search engine Excite it cost me £50 for a years subscription for unmetered 0800 internet access and was to be £20 for any consecutive annual subscriptions. Since my initial subscription it ... more
