Advantages: Wonderful artwork, fun recitations, opportunity for Burl Ives impressions! Disadvantages: Takes a couple of weeks to arrive, not a cheap picture book.
...Ives in his musical guise: There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly.
I may not sing it as well as Burl Ives, but I do think I've sung this song at least as many times as he did; it's our most favourite of favourites. Advantages: funny read and kids will love it. Disadvantages: the lady dies at the end!!
...that firstly swallows a fly, there is no reason given why she would do such a thing but she then continues to eat a spider in order to catch the fly, then a bird to catch the spider and so on and so on... As you follow the book through the same picture of the old lady is on each page and it has a catchy rhyme that tells you what she has just eaten with a picture of the animal inside her stomach with the previous animal inside their stomach. The book ... ...lady actually dies! There is no age range put on the book but with the contents and rhyming as they are I would say the child would need to be around the 4-5 year old mark. I would recommend this book to any child as it is a catchy and fun book that has been around for many years which just proves that it must be very popular. ...
