The most famous and, for me, the nicest of the coffee liqueurs, Tia Maria is a rich, dark brown, syrupy, aromatic delight best drunk alone, or on ice. Pour it slowly from the dark brown, square bottle, roll it around the glass and take a deep breath of freshly filtered coffee. Sip it and taste the thickened, velvet coffee with its fiery alcoholic kick and wait for the syrupy, vanilla sweetness to ...

What is Tia Maria
Tia Maria is a liqueur spirit with the distinct taste of coffee. It is produced by Pernod Ricard and is made in Jamaica using Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee beans. The main ingredients are coffee beans, cane spirit, vanilla and sugar.

This is where Tia Maria comes in for me. Now I’ve grown up, (or so it’s sometimes rumoured), I want alcohol. But the ten year old in me still wants sweet drinks. This gorgeous drink fits the bill perfectly, (as do many liqueurs). This one is special though, in that I never tire of it. The biggest give-away to the identity of this drink for me, is in fact the gold lettered Tia Maria on the label. I never fail to spot it without thinking, ‘That’s Tia Maria’! ...and I've got to agree. Tia Maria is a dark rum and while it looks like it could be quite dry, it's got a deliciously sweet coffee/vanilla taste to it that is so moreish. Pour it into a glass and you'll see a thick, dark coloured, wonderful-smelling liquid come out. Put the glass to your lips and inhale the vanilla/coffee smell. The taste of Tia Maria should never be forgotten, like marmite you either love it or hate it. I most definitely fall into the former category! ...unopened. A virgin bottle of Tia Maria! The packaging was kind of distinctive. Red on brown sounded like a ghastly combo, but it worked! Eye catching. I had heard of this drink before but I never thought to try some. Now seemed like a good as any time! Trouble is, I didn't how to drink it. What mixers do you use? Using the wrong mixer can be disasterous; anyone who's mixed Baileys and Red bull will testify to that (and yes! It was horrible!).

IT is quite difficult to pin-point the taste as it is very unique. It is quite sugary so alert you dentist before ingesting! I'm not willing to dispute as it probably does taste like that. But you have to understand, that I was drunk! It could have tasted like the inside of a wrestler's jockstrap for all I cared!

Tia Maria has to be one of the most intriguing drinks that I have ever tasted.
The combination of coffee, vanilla, sugar and spirits has been perfected to create a unique liqueur that is smooth and rich in flavour.

...to the world of liqueurs. Tia Maria has turned into one of the best loved of coffee-flavoured products. Its based, unsurprisingly on good dark Jamaican rum, of at least five year old standard and flavoured with the highly prized Blue Mountain coffee beans. On top of the this the additions of local spices deepens the flavour. It is a sweet liqueur, sweeter than its Mexican cousin Kahlua, however its aromatic components stop it from being cloying.

Tia Maria is brilliant for lacing chocolate desserts and of course, it makes a good liqueur coffee - particularly when the coffee used is Blue Mountain.

A big reason for its populairty was the craze for the cocktail; the Black Russian, often taken with the addition of coca-cola. Proportions for a Black Mountain vary according to taste, but generally two parts vodka to one part Tia Maria on ice is a good starting point.

I drink Tia Maria and coca cola in a long glass, this is known as a Black Russian and believe me it's one to die for.
