Advantages Advantages Excellent route planning, directions,

Disadvantages Disadvantages Old maps needs updating, Slow GPS signal at start

I purchased this Tom Tom Navigator 5 for approx 200 GBP two months back. I am an IT Consultant and am required to go to different client's sites at different locations. At first I used to print out the directions from mapquest or theaa.com and then try to follow these, but always I used to lose or miss out in between and land up searching again. This procedure was difficult if I was traveling alone as its difficult to hold that piece of paper and look out for directions etc., So I finally decided to go in for the Navigation software and I had heard that TOMTOM is the best in the market. Now I ... more

Advantages Advantages Route Planning, Position, distance to next instruction

Disadvantages Disadvantages Old Maps, POI Warnings require add-on

I purchased TomTom Navigator along with my HP iPAQ 2210 about 10 months ago. I travel about 18000 miles a year and this product has been a great asset. It saves me having to make route notes and keep referring to road atlases. For town driving it is even better as road maps do not show all local roads. I initially purchased version 3.0 but have now upgraded to v3.03 (427). I use it with a wired GPS receiver which simply plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car. In most cases you run the application and then bring up the Navigator Menu. You can then choose where you want to go; a recent ... more

Advantages Advantages voice guidance!, easy to use, portable, congestion charge aware

Disadvantages Disadvantages only navigates via roads, so no going thru parks., maps are about a year out of date, cost of aditional maps

The Navigator series of software allows your device (in this case an ipaq pda) to turn into a fully fledged GPS tracking system. Now, the spec: I am running Tomtom 3 on an Ipaq 36xx series with a dual CF slot jacket with a Pretec GPS card and and a 256MB CF card. This was the hardware I was using from navigator 2. I bought this a) portability - i can use it in the different cars I have b) updated maps - maps are only a year old(ish) c) cheap - cheaper than a in car dashboard version (esp the mercedes one at £1800!!) I had Tomtom nav. 2 on my ipaq and decided to upgrade to navigator 3. First ... more

Advantages Advantages nice 3D view giving a good rendering of the route ahead, large third party support.

Disadvantages Disadvantages No way to update maps, Points of interest management limitations

My first experience of Sat Nav was with Tom Tom 2, by which time the software was pretty much established. Version 3 brought a few enhancements and improvements so I decided it was time to upgrade my Ipaq 2200. In use the software is simple, enter the destination address and off you go. A choice of voices is available, for those with a preference over the sort of person you allow to tell you what to do. There are times when the address is unknown, its only as accurate as OS mapping. The best way around this I have found is to use an online route finder and then set my destination to the ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of programs that can be used to update poi's

Disadvantages Disadvantages sometimes hangs no way of personaly updateing maps

I have had my tomtom 3 bluetooth for about 1year now and is the perfect companion to my ipaq4150 i wouldnt be without it now. Simple to use just turn it on and click the navigater program on your ipaq and it'll link up with the gps. Plenty of good apps out there for addons to tomtom navigator like postcode finder and poi update with a net database so you can download new poi's and import them into navigator. My overall verdict If you have a car and an ipaq get the tomtom you wont be sorry. Also the car kit for your ipaq is very usefull with the capability of charging both your ipaq and your ... more
