Advantages Advantages Great if on a budget.

Disadvantages Disadvantages None of the mod cons currently available on higher models.

10 months ago we brought home our precious first baby from hospital. As new parents we have fussed and worried over our tiny bundle with enormous love. My best friend passed over her Tomy classic baby monitor declaring after twins she definitely wasn't having any more! It was actually quite awhile before we had the need to use the monitor as baby slept in a mosses basket in the lounge with us during the day or in another mosses basket in our bedroom, so was never in a different room for a least 3 months. Then in preparation for sleeping in a cot, naps during the day were in her mosses basket ... more

Making the decision what baby monitor to get when my son came along wasn’t an easy one as there are so many monitors to choose from. In the end I choose the Tomy walkabout classics, mainly as they had so many features on them, for instance they were portable which is handy if you are in the garden and your little one is in bed and they were good value for money at £29.75 ( at argos) ***** The instructions ***** The instructions are easy to follow, they tell you how to set up the baby unit selecting the right channel and the communication range the monitors have. ***** Using the monitors from ... more

4 Stars Portable Peace of Mind for Parents Review with images 25/03/2005

Advantages Advantages Portable, volume control, peace of mind for parents

Disadvantages Disadvantages The mute button is pointless and not well thought out, interference

When I was a baby my parents didn't have a baby monitor, they just had sharp ears! It's amazing how you can pick up the slightest sound from your child and differentiate it from other babies sounds, even when they are all in the same room. I swear I can hear Leah make any noise at all when I am out in the garden even WITHOUT a baby monitor! However, it was one of those must-have gadgets that we chose before she was born, because at that time I had no idea I would get radar ears. There are some very fancy and sophisticated monitors on the market now, including those with temperature gauges and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Mobile, well made

Disadvantages Disadvantages can use batteries quickly.

I decided on this monitor, not because it was the cheapest on the market, because at between thirty and forty pounds its not. But because Tomy are a brand that I trust and associate with good quality products. I must say that other monitors are available on the market and cost a lot more, as this does the job very well I cannot see the point of spending more for the same job. The Tomy Walkabout Classic seemed the answer to my prayers, as when my baby was sleeping I would not be tied to one room waiting for the monitor to sound. Setting the monitors up is so easy, simply place the baby monitor ... more

Advantages Advantages Peace of mind - when it works

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far too susceptible to interference

This is a review of two halves! We purchased the Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance as this seemed the best value baby monitor with the features we wanted. Also, our perception of the Tomy brand was that their baby products are quality. The monitor cost us £35 when on offer in Mothercare. We bought it before our son arrived, so there was a three month gap between us buying it and needing to use it. We tested it the day we purchased it, as the instructions state that you may have to adjust the channel / frequency setting initially. However, it worked perfectly out of the box first time. What you ... more

When my son was first born he was always in the same room as us (slept in a carrycot or in our arms), but when he started outgrowing this at around 3 months old and we started putting him in his cot to sleep we felt the need to have a baby monitor. Although his fine set of lungs made it impossible to not hear his crys I wanted to be able to hear the first wimpers even when the tv was on so he wouldn't need to get so upset before I responded. Having looked in the various sorts I decided on one of the cheaper options, the tomy walkabout classic. Main Features --------------- As the name suggests ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Loads of interference

I bought these when my son was a few weeks old from boots for £25. I only used them twice as I far prefered to keep him in the same room as myself. Being a first time mum I was petrified, and constantly found myself checking on him if he hadn't cried in fear that he'd stopped breathing. When he turned 15 months i decided that it was about time the little tyke slept in his own room. I used the monitors every night without no hassle but after a week and a half I switched on the parent unit only to hear hissing. The hissing was loud even with the monitor turned right down. I could only hear my ... more

This baby monitor has been great for us with our 3 month old son. He is finally sleeping through the night so rather than me going up to bed at 8pm I am now putting the little fella down and having an evening! This isn’t the first monitor we tried and I can say it is certainly the best. My advice would be to avoid the monitors that plug directly in to the wall (like the air freshener units!) as they need to be away from a radiator and at least three meters apart which is no good if your baby’s room is directly above where you are with the other monitor. The Tomy Walkabout Classic ... more

The Tomy Walkaout Classic has to have been around for years, and for good reason. I bought one when my daughter started sleeping in her own room, this meant I could watch tv without having to have the sound right down so I could hear her. The monitors cost from £25-£30, but they are often reduced in sale or on promotion. You can buy them pretty much everywhere they sell baby stuff. For your money you get a parent unit and a baby unit. You are supplies with mains cables for both units, but you can also use 4 x AA batteries (in each unit!) to make them portable. As the name suggests the baby ... more

We bought the Walkabout Classic to put in our daughters nursery as we knew she wouldnt be sleeping in our bedroom for long. When she was 3months we decided it was time for her to sleep on her own in her own room. We put her down to sleep, turned on the monitor and retreated to the bedroom. It felt like she was still in the same room as us as we could hear her beathing and gently turning in her sleep. It was good to know that she could sleep safely in her bedroom and I could monitor her. The Walkabout Classic comes in two seperate units.
