Advantages Advantages Excellent features, A-Z index of manufacturers/make+model, excellent regular columnists

Disadvantages Disadvantages letters page; occasionally the photographers focus more on their models than the cars

The biggest problem I've found with my car enthusiasm is, well, I'm a girl. So trying to find a monthly car-oriented publication that's not FHM with power steering or a lingerie catalogue wrapped around a few F1 reports can be a bit of... A trial. So often did the covers of my magazine purchases result in mortifying embarrassment (long before I reached the check out, I might add), I'd confined my vehicular reading materials to copies of Autotrader and newspaper motoring sections. Then last year I discovered TOP GEAR MAGAZINE and I haven't looked back. It really is a fantastic magazine ... more

    Advantages Advantages Clarkson returned

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not Enough from the main men, Clarkson, May and Hammond

I hadn't bought Top Gear for a few years but I remembered it as by far the best and most interesting Car magazine out there. Where other magazines read like a massive indiscriminate advertisement for whatever car they were reviewing and are often bogged down in listing all the facts on the car or displaying a journalists knowledge of "Torque", Top Gear was always more readable and you always got some real opinions on the cars and it was always done in an entertaining way. They had the incomparable Jeremy Clarkson, willing to savage a car like no other man could if wasn't up to scratch. For ... more

    Advantages Advantages Plenty of information

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as good as it was

I have a great interest in cars. I don't know why, I just do. This magazine gives me all of the facts and figures I could ever want (well, actually it would be nice to have some details other than price for second hand cars, but that would probably make the magazine much thicker!). The thing is, I could get those same facts and figures in any number of magazines, so why do I read Top Gear? Well, it seems to me to give a good compromise between something like Car, which is a bit middle aged, and Max Power, which is aimed at spotty youths with nothing better to do with their money than paint ... more

Advantages Advantages Informative magazine focused on the cars, just as much fun as the TV shows

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be a little technical at times

The Top Gear TV programme has begin to achieve nationwide recognition in it's last few series, and with good reason; you'll struggle to find anything more entertaining on the box. However, with this popularity has come a burden of sorts - the new audience. Previously it was the reserve of automotive buffs, but now, people from all walks of life, whatever their opinion on cars, are tuning in, because it is such good entertainment. In short, while the show is still very good and highly enjoyable, it isn't quite as good at providing information on cars as it used to be. So what can the motoring ... more

    Advantages Advantages Occasional good features

Disadvantages Disadvantages Tacky, quality of photos + storys

I remember when this first came out - and i read one, and thought it was exactly the same as car magazine: The review section - with it's ratings , and then most of all , the columnists - with a little picture of what ever they're talking about - just like in Car Magazine. Top G. Magazine does get you more magazine for your money , than Car. But the quality of photography or reviewers in not as good. The good bit about the magazine is that if there's been something good on the programme (rarely happens now) - it'll be covered in more depth in the magazine, and there were once quite a few good ... more

Advantages Advantages Reviews, Humour, Information, News, Unusualness

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

This is not only the best car magazine I have read, but the best magazine overall. I discoverd it about a year and a half ago and have been buying it monthy ever since. If your a fan of Top Gear the TV programme then without doubt you will love this. The magazine contains various different articles from James May, Richard Hammond, Jason (fifth gear) along with a whole array of others. The Clarkson column, two pages long, is always funny and a good read. Then theres the cars, there's information about concepts, new exclusives, and reviews about supercars aswell as the normal. A great addition ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great read

    Disadvantages Disadvantages loads of adverts

I first started reading top gear mag last year, when i had watched the series on T.V. I like cars and i like to find out about the new models that are coming out. When i first started to read the magazine, the first thing that i noticed was all of the adverts for the cars, (i know its a car mag, but the number of adverts is maddness.) This hasn't put me off reading it, because i find it enjoyable to read, and very informative. Basically what they do is drive the cars, and then they write an article about what they think of the car, what it drives like, the interior, and the exterior. Towards ... more

    Advantages Advantages Clarkson

Disadvantages Disadvantages Ads, ads, ads and more ads. And Skoda.

The problem with Top Gear - and it is just that, the single problem - is that no one cares about the latest Skoda Fabia. Or the Superb. Or the Supreme, Sublime, Fantastic or whatever other wacky names those Czechs will think up next. For a magazine dominated by Jeremy Clarkson - lover of the extravagant, the expensive and the put-down - Top Gear spends too much time reviewing cars that Top Gear readers don't buy. People who want to by 1.8D Passats and 1.1L Fiestas don't read motoring magazine - they're normally too busy with Heat or something similarly dire. When they do send their big guns to ... more

Advantages Advantages Witty, Well-written, Informative and Interesting

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too many adverts; only comes once a month

Top Gear... This is THE car mag to read if you are serious about cars in any format; buying a car, renting a car, selling a car, or even just coz you drive a car. The whole magazine is broken up into perfect little bite-sized articles, allowing you to either read the whole thing cover to cover (which I ahve done on many occasions), or to digest little bits at a time over the entire month. The articles are always accompanied by great photos, and in the full road tests they always make usre that there are shots of then inside of the cabin as well (something that many car mags seem far too ready ... more

Advantages Advantages Light-hearted but gets the point across

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not enough focus on second-hand cars

I've recently suscribed to the Top Gear Magazine after about a year with What Car Magazine. I'm really enjoying this magazine because it just doesn't focus on cars but on lifestyle products - games, sat-nav systems and even clothes. The what car mag was good for people interested purely in data, this magazine is more humerous and lightheated but i feel that it still gets its point across. My only whine about this magazine is that it tends to look more at top end cars, yes it does look at 'normal' cars but not to the extent of like supercars of expensive models. Also the second-hand section is ... more
