Vorsprung Durch Top Gear (as they say)

Advantages: Excellent features, A-Z index of manufacturers/make+model, excellent regular columnists
Disadvantages: letters page; occasionally the photographers focus more on their models than the cars

...Then last year I discovered TOP GEAR MAGAZINE and I haven't looked back. It really is a fantastic magazine, offering some of the same; yet so much more than the eponymous programme and wrapped in a package that wouldn't make your gran blush! TOP GEAR MAGAZINE is all about cars, cars, cars! Hurrah! STUNNING CARS: The magazine's first section is METAL - consistently the best chapter of the magazine - this has all of the month's previews and prototypes ...
...basic tech specs (BHP/TQ, 0-60, top speed etc) and some of the most beautiful vehicle stills photography I've ever seen. SARCASTIC CARS: The magazine is home to two written columns by TOP GEAR programme presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May who join Paul Horrell in the FACES section. The content here varies from month to month depending on the columnists' choice of topic, but it's a section that guarantees at least 30mins of good reading - an ...

They Haven't Quite Found Top Gear Again...

Advantages: Clarkson returned
Disadvantages: Not Enough from the main men, Clarkson, May and Hammond

I hadn't bought Top Gear for a few years but I remembered it as by far the best and most interesting Car magazine out there. Where other magazines read like a massive indiscriminate advertisement for whatever car they were reviewing and are often bogged down in listing all the facts on the car or displaying a journalists knowledge of "Torque", Top Gear was always more readable and you always got some real opinions on the cars and it was always done ...
...was trying to head up Top Gear and having been challenged by channel 4's Driven as the best car show around, the call was made for Clarkson to return as the programmes figurehead and saviour. The TV show was stretched to an hour long extravaganza, with it incorporating more of a chat show format for Clarkson about cars. Joined by his minions, Richard Hammond and James May as co presenters and the butt of his jokes, this new format really suits Clarkson, ...

Not what it was

Advantages: Plenty of information
Disadvantages: Not as good as it was

...so why do I read Top Gear? Well, it seems to me to give a good compromise between something like Car, which is a bit middle aged, and Max Power, which is aimed at spotty youths with nothing better to do with their money than paint their Nova bright green. They have factual articles about new cars, but they aren't afraid to poke fun at silly cars, and occasionally themselves. The magazine is in a bit of a decline now, with no Quentin Willson, and ...
...Unfortunately, they don't seem to get much of a mix these days; some issues seem to be aimed at millionaires, and others at "family man", whereas in earlier issues they would have a nice balance. It still offers plenty of amusement, though, and could keep you occupied on a long train journey. ...

Top Gear Magazine - Better Than The Shows?

Advantages: Informative magazine focused on the cars, just as much fun as the TV shows
Disadvantages: Can be a little technical at times

The Top Gear TV programme has begin to achieve nationwide recognition in it's last few series, and with good reason; you'll struggle to find anything more entertaining on the box. However, with this popularity has come a burden of sorts - the new audience. Previously it was the reserve of automotive buffs, but now, people from all walks of life, whatever their opinion on cars, are tuning in, because it is such good entertainment. In short, while ...
...void? The answer comes in Top Gear magazine. The articles are more technical, and because they are targeted towards a more niche audience, place a much higher focus on the vehicles themselves. However, the wonderful sense of humour has not been lost, and the zany, entertaining nature still remains. The challenges for which the TV series is now famous for still exist (for example, the January 09 issue contained a drive across the spine of the USA ...

Pretty much a copy of Car Magazine

Advantages: Occasional good features
Disadvantages: Tacky, quality of photos + storys

...Car Magazine. Top G. Magazine does get you more magazine for your money , than Car. But the quality of photography or reviewers in not as good. The good bit about the magazine is that if there's been something good on the programme (rarely happens now) - it'll be covered in more depth in the magazine, and there were once quite a few good features. Now though - it just seems a bit tacky. ...

TOP GEAR MAGAZINE

Advantages: Reviews, Humour, Information, News, Unusualness
Disadvantages: None

...If your a fan of Top Gear the TV programme then without doubt you will love this. The magazine contains various different articles from James May, Richard Hammond, Jason (fifth gear) along with a whole array of others. The Clarkson column, two pages long, is always funny and a good read. Then theres the cars, there's information about concepts, new exclusives, and reviews about supercars aswell as the normal. A great addition is to all the articles ...
...such as price, engine size, top speed, 0-60, and the price per calendar month for you to purchase it. A great section of the magazine is 'Lifers'. Were reporters have to live with the car they are reviewing (I think for six months) and report back on every month on whats good and whats bad. Theres also a price guide with prices of all cars on the market with details regarding there top speeds, 0-60 times, insurance groups, co2 emissions and lots ...

Top of the mags

Advantages: Great read
Disadvantages: loads of adverts

I first started reading top gear mag last year, when i had watched the series on T.V. I like cars and i like to find out about the new models that are coming out. When i first started to read the magazine, the first thing that i noticed was all of the adverts for the cars, (i know its a car mag, but the number of adverts is maddness.) This hasn't put me off reading it, because i find it enjoyable to read, and very informative. Basically what they ...
...about what they think of the car, what it drives like, the interior, and the exterior. Towards the back of the magazine, it has a handy section if you are thinking are buying a new car. It is seperated into the different makes of cars, and then into the different models of each car. It also tells you the price, and which insurance group that the car falls under. It isn't that expensive for some of the car magazines that are out there, you can pick ...

More of excessive.

Advantages: Clarkson
Disadvantages: Ads, ads, ads and more ads. And Skoda.

The problem with Top Gear - and it is just that, the single problem - is that no one cares about the latest Skoda Fabia. Or the Superb. Or the Supreme, Sublime, Fantastic or whatever other wacky names those Czechs will think up next. For a magazine dominated by Jeremy Clarkson - lover of the extravagant, the expensive and the put-down - Top Gear spends too much time reviewing cars that Top Gear readers don't buy. People who want to by 1.8D Passats ...
...as hell aren't interested that a Kangoo understeers chronically if taken round a corner, or that Golfs aren't great for handbrake turns or power-slides. No, Top Gear remains the best mix of names, news, reviews and articles - and I still read it cover to cover every month. ...

The Daddy of car mags

Advantages: Witty, Well-written, Informative and Interesting
Disadvantages: Too many adverts; only comes once a month

Top Gear... This is THE car mag to read if you are serious about cars in any format; buying a car, renting a car, selling a car, or even just coz you drive a car. The whole magazine is broken up into perfect little bite-sized articles, allowing you to either read the whole thing cover to cover (which I ahve done on many occasions), or to digest little bits at a time over the entire month. The articles are always accompanied by great photos, and ...
...there are shots of then inside of the cabin as well (something that many car mags seem far too ready to omit). There are regular head-to heads between cars of a similar nature, allowing you to get an "on the ground" report of how they fare in direct competition. One of the criticisms levelled against TG is that it is too biased, and always too ready to express personal views and feelings. Well GOOD - if I wanted to know about a car entirely without ...

Top Gear magazine - worth the money

Advantages: Light-hearted but gets the point across
Disadvantages: Not enough focus on second-hand cars

I've recently suscribed to the Top Gear Magazine after about a year with What Car Magazine. I'm really enjoying this magazine because it just doesn't focus on cars but on lifestyle products - games, sat-nav systems and even clothes. The what car mag was good for people interested purely in data, this magazine is more humerous and lightheated but i feel that it still gets its point across. My only whine about this magazine is that it tends to look ...
...'normal' cars but not to the extent of like supercars of expensive models. Also the second-hand section is quite small; it doesn't give a price indication on second hand cars but its new cars cost section is very comprehensive and provides all the key data - it even tells u if its I-POD compatible. The magazine also almost always comes with a free gift, sure its not like a car but its always something qurkie and fun overall i would recommend it ...

Not quite Top Mag

Advantages: Clarkson
Disadvantages: Nothing else nearly as noteworthy

I read just a few of these magazines and I'm afraid I'm not that big a fan. As a comparison, I think Car is much better in terms of the articles it offers, it seems to have morenews of interest to me and less wasting of paper on daft events that I didn't want to watch on TopGear, the program, never mind sit down and read! Thankfully it still has Jeremy Clarkson as one of the columnists. While he may not be enough to make the magazine worth buying ...

i think top gear magazine is an extremly good magazine, i think it is fantastic value for money and it is a pleasure to read. I think jeremy clarkson is an incredable man, he is wise, very clever, and can tell you everything about any car you would could imagine. i like the fact that the range of cars in each issue differs ,i find it well written, well designed, funny and they offer you all the information possible.the contents is always original ...

Top Gear is Clarkson

Advantages: Jeremy Clarkson - The best car journalist ever!
Disadvantages: Rubbish cover quality - see below

Firstly, the front cover - It is always an A3 fold over and it leaves a gap at the side of the mag. It doesn't seem much but when you leave the mag on the side it can crumple the front pages and make the mag taty. Now, to the magazine. This is a great magazine which is all cars and no humour apart from the great Clarkson column. I know that many people hate Clarkson, but read his column. It is probable the funniest thing ever. You can read it over ...
...look for is his column. The back pages have been changed and it makes it really hard to get the right imformation for the cars because all the lines merge into one. The photographs are generally quite good but quite tacky if you know what I mean and the content is great for car lovers like me. For car lovers and no one else - enjoy :-) ...

Top Gear Magazine

Advantages: Everything especially first drives!
Disadvantages: None Really

The magazine is very high quality with the photography and content what I would classify as outstanding! The first secton is about the new cars or news that has had information being recieved for the future. Regular sections include `This month in Motor World` which has a 20 space grid which has the highs and lows of the month from winning at Le Mans to A77 Specs Cameras. Next Section is Faces, where Jeremy Clarkson, James May and more have their ...

Lifers is the last section were people who work at the magazine have 1 of a variety of cars for 6 - 12 months to report on how the car is in the long term. At the back there are price and spec pages on every car on sale today. Very good magazine overall! ...

The best mag to get if you want a new car...

Advantages: easy to understand
Disadvantages: none

This is a great magazine to help me choose my next car, being a girl and all it is in basic easy terms... the pictures are fantastic and do not look like they have been changed to make the cars look better. the write up for each car is very easy to understand so i know at a glance if the car i am looking at is safe? easy to handle, user friendly and fuel consumption. i do not understand and the figures that are mentioned but the other points mentioned ...
