A PII-300 smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, just over 2cm thick, and weighing as much as a bag of sugar! If it was ugly as sin you'd forgive it - but it looks darn fine too!
The 300 Mhz processor is plenty powerful enough to crunch everday tasks - and it's just as capable running Word, Dreamweaver or web surfing. The 6GB hard disk, and 64Mb memory complement appropriately.
The 10.4" TFT screen is plenty big enough for most work at 800x600, and ... ...speed either. The 'nipple' mouse pointer is plenty responsive, and despite not having used such a pointer before I was soon comfortable.
Battery life is well above average, giving 2 to 3 hours depending on levels of disk access / modem use. Toshiba's proprietory power saving software squeezes battery life to your own preference (eg the processor speed reduces slightly to compensate for being online and therefore using the internal modem).

Something else that might not be to everybody's taste is the finger-joystick pointing device which Toshiba still stubbornly refuses to replace with a mouse pad. Still, the keyboard is well above average for a subnote, and avoids common evils like undersized Enter and Backspace keys, an excessively cramped layout, and non-standard function-doubling to save ... ...rather on the small side for its native XGA resolution, so you get the desktop area but everything's fairly tiny on-screen.
Performance is sound, with nothing bottlenecking the system, and this shouldn't be an issue, while battery life is average for a subnote, typically panning out at around 2.5 hours per session. Being students, my brother and I each recently purchased this specific laptop computer. Basically, the little beast is amazing! It’s compact size and looks but additionally its very full specification made it the ideal laptop for us both. I bought a Toshiba Portege 3110 about six months ago due to it winning the PC Magazine sub-Notebook award. One of the main reasons I bought was its size and weight - this is a tiny machine and weighs in at a little over 1Kg. It is ideal if you want a machine to use whilst commuting, since you won't need to visit the chiropractor after carrying it around for a week, unlike most laptops. However, if you want a desktop replacement, look elsewhere.
... ...a decent sized TFT screen; is powerful enough for me to develop web applications on; and has an exceptional battery life for a small machine (3 hours). It can get a little warm after being on for a couple of hours, but in the winter that warms my legs quite nicely.

I purchase a lot of laptops for the company I work for and we tend to stick with Toshiba. Why? Because they offer excellent build quality and reliability not to mention the speed of repairs etc.
A director wanted a light laptop as he travels a lot. I recommended the Portege 4010 and tool delivery of it this morning.
It is a very sleek silver design. The keyboard area is black. The unit I brought is the following specification. Pentium III 933 Mobile ... ...10/100 network and 56K modem, WiFi, 2 x USB and internal DVD drive.
I brought it from Action.com for £1644.99. The floppy drive is a further £53.99.
The laptop is extremely light weighing in at 1.7Kg. The power adapter is also light weight. To reduce the weight even further, you can remove the DVD drive and replace it with a plastic insert which weighs no more than a plastic cup.

...about the laptop is that Toshiba decided to include the Port Replicator for free. The port replicator adds more USB ports, an ethernet port and a few others.
The downside to this laptop is mainly the RAM. The laptop comes with 64Mb of RAM which can be upgraded with 32Mb, 64Mb and 128Mb modules. The problem with these RAM chips is that they are VERY expensive. £50 or $70 for the 128Mb module!!!
The laptop can also get quite hot and the cooling fan ... ...care of the battery as it can suddenly drop to 5% capacity when it was at 80%. Please also bear in mind that the hard drive is quite small so a hard drive upgrade might be a good idea. As this laptop is very small, it does not have a floppy or CD drive built in, but the laptop comes with a external floppy drive. To use a CD drive with the laptop, i recommend buying a PCMCIA external CD drive, as USB drives are not recognised by the laptop.

This is an opinion for people who, like me, have read other opinions on computers and thought "huh?".
Why we wanted a laptop:-
We live in a one-bedroom flat so there is no room for a desk top plus work station. I wanted something I could type documents on and my husband wanted something on which he could produce presentations. The other essentials were CD Rom and internet access.
The one we chose:-
A Portege 3110 from eBay at a cost of £250. ... ...arrived very well packaged on Saturday. The Portege really is compact. When I took the packaging and accessories out of the carrying case, I thought the seller had forgotten to put in the laptop as it was hidden in a corner. It is smaller than an A4 sheet of paper and about 2 cms thick. What we think of it:-

The Notebook is SMALL and LIGHT that's it main features. 25.7cm x 21.8cm and only 1.4kg.
The processor runs at 300Mhz and the device will probably come with a 6GB HD. The Laptop runs hot and the fan never really stops.
The standard package comes with 64MB of memory and can be upgraded to 192MB. I have a 128MB upgrade chip installed, bringing it up to 192MB. Treat yourself and upgrade your memory.
The original OS was WIN98. I upgrade my Protégé ... ...then make sure you have the latest drivers for the external CD-ROM and remove the extra memory before the upgrade. As I remember, at some point it failed because it couldn't address the extra memory. With XP loaded reinstall the extra memory and the system will discover it.
The system can be upgraded using the floppy disk drive if you don't have a CD-ROM.

The Toshiba Portege laptop is the best I have ever used, as it is quite different form the usual bulky, sluggish laptops I have used in the past.
The main purpose of laptops is to be fast, easy to use, easy to transport and be efficient. This laptop is all of these, I found the keyboard good and the roller point mouse is very effective once you get used to it. In a year of owning it I think it only crashed once and it handled multitaksing with ease. ... ...However it does give you the option of "customising" almost - only taking necessary parts with you when needed.
Overall this is a very good Laptop and I would recommend it among alot of others as Toshiba are a very good make and the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages. ...

The Toshiba Portege 7020 CT laptop is a great looker. Sleek brushed aluminium tops, crisp clear screens that are also rather spacious. Good keyboard and a nice 'nipple'. One would imagine that this would be the dream laptop.
Not so. The powerful PII processor is badly let down by the docking station. Okay it is light compared to some, some models come with DVD - which is handy with NT as it doesn't work. The thing about the docking station is that ... ...The user cannot unplug the network connection without the laptop crashing/freezing/refusing to connect. This defeats the objective of having a laptop. Especially, if as I do, you have a boss who demands your attendance in meetings at a moments notice. Having to shutdown and reboot is extremely annoying.
There is a solution to this - PCMCIA cards. However these are not a panacea. Unless, that is, our internal systems guys have wrongly configured ...
