Advantages: Cheap, reliable, durable, fast enough, large display
Disadvantages: Fairly heavy (in comparison to more modern laptops)
I picked up a Toshiba 4100XCDT from Insight for £1000 (+VAT), and am very happy with the result - I wanted a cheap, durable, reliable laptop with in-built modem and CR-ROM. The main specs of the machine are as follows: Pentium II 400, 64 MB RAM, 6 GB Hard Disk Drive, 14.1" screen, 24X CD-ROM, V.90/56K Modem, Windows NT (SP4). Bomb proof

Advantages: Solid build, stable platform
Disadvantages: Not easy to switch to external monitor
I am now running several Toshiba Sattelite 4100's for mobile users and fieldwork teams. These machines are running either Windows NT or Windows 2000. Overall I haven't yet had a single problem with hardware failure or device conflicts. The machines have a built in 56k modem which performs adequately, although I would have liked to have seen Toshiba include built in Ethernet.
One gripe is to do with the detection of monitors, under NT this model requires ...
