The Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 Laptop Computer is a good reliable workhorse and I have been using mine most days for the last two years.

I purchased my 4600 as a second-hand (reconditioned) laptop some 2 years ago and at the time it was valued at AU$850 (although when new, two years previous to that I am informed that the value would have been several thousand AU$).
This laptop has been excellent in terms of its capabilites and ease of use and I have to say that I have used it almost daily since I bought it. I originally installed Windows 2000 on it but after some problems with malware ... ...problems managing this. It cope easily with all the normal demands of office and imaging software and also has no problems with internet connectivity. It also has a CD/DVD player (although not a burner) and a card slot in the side, which I have used to install a firewire card, as the laptop otherwise has only USB ports (something to think about if you want to transfer files, especially music, to external drives).

(+) cool and quite robust trackpad, good display,64-bit windows 7 (-) few connectors,dell drivers only, not realy for gameing (most models), finger print prone!
