Advantages: Reliable, great drive, huge capacity Disadvantages: windows steam up easily, inflexible seating
...quibble from the man from Toyota fixing it under warranty.
The car seems to have a reasonably low centre of gravity, and is quite narrow, and it handles much more like a car than a typical people carrier. It is certainly nippy, and it drinks less petrol than the 1.8 Ford. As far as seats are concerned it is more like an estate, with the third row removeable. The central bench seat though slides back and forward on runners to set back and front leg ... ...the bench folded down and the rear seats out, the carrying capacity is huge. Alternatively it will carry six adults and a child in comfort. For a family it has innumerable cup holders, toy boxes etc, and auxiliary 12v power sockets in the rear to run I don't know what.
I've heard the car described as being rather noisy at motorway speeds, I have to say its never seemed a problem to me. Similarly Top Gear faulted the cornering but it seems acceptable ...

Advantages: Mobility, Size, Economy, Disadvantages: Toyota service costs, steamy windows in winter hindering visability to the sides.
My Toyota Picnic is a white 6 seater, If I could have gotten my hands on the 7 seater Japanese import at the time of purchase I would have take it. The added extras at comparable cost would have been worth it. I have had many Toyotas in the past and always found them reliable..This one does not disappoint. My family do alot of 'car based' holidaying, and the Picnic travels well. I have found it very economical on fuel and easy to handle on the road. ... ...with plenty of 'get up and go'. You have the advantage of the roominess of larger people movers without the disadvantage of oversize. The front seats have a gap between for easy access to the middle seating area. The rear two seats can fold flat or alternatively be easily 'clipped' in and out of place. Extras enclude drinks holders, airconditioning, factory installed 'invisable' CD player, mobile/reclining middle seats. The rear removable seats can ...

Advantages: 7 seater with fold into the floor seats Disadvantages: only availble in the grey import "Ipsum"
...a grey import of the Toyota Picnic (the Ipsum) I purchased the car within 2 hours of test driving it. I have never like the fact the Toyota cars all have the same “look” even though they are built 10 years apart. I dismissed the Picnic because of it’s bolted down seats 6-7 and for dated looks. But when I came across a newly imported grey market Ipsum I saw that I would get the Zafira’s flex seven seating system (Toyota had build it’s own system 3 ... ...of the rear boot). So far after three years of ownership we have had to replace the original battery (we have a P reg 1996). That is it. I just wish Toyota would include this seating system in the AvenisVerso MPV range and really compete with the likes of Vauxhall. ...

Advantages: good value, reliable, air conditioning, useful layout with children with scope for seat swaps. Disadvantages: metal feels a bit thin and is potentially easily dentable, rear visibility
...the 2.2 diesel from a toyota dealer, owned the car for nearly four years. Mileage now about 75.000.
We have three children, oldest are teenagers. the latter like the rearmost seats although the middle ones are the most comfortable with a particularly large side window and a foldable arm rest.
No problems to speak of, it isn't that comfortable to drive over long distances not withstanding the adjustable seat although it might help if we had the ... ...need a roof rack which clips onto the roof rails, for every day it is fine and it is surprising how much domestic stuff one can get in the car by moving the seats, folding them or removing the back two.
It is an economical way of moving people about, the bigger MPV's are more expensive to run and this one fits in our garage. The interior is slightly scuffed but then it gets a good battering and it would probably clean up with the right type of valleting. ...

Advantages: Japanese reliability, size, price Disadvantages: parts/ servicing costs, consumption
We have a 1997 2litre petrol picnic. The car has huge miles (145000) and a full dealer service history.
I cant fault the reliability as in 2 years the car has only once developed a fault and this was in the electronics - this is where the experience gets tricky. Sourcing these cars in breakers etc. is very difficult and this makes parts expensive. If you can find a breaker who has one they are usually as expensive as a new part due to the scarcity ... ...(mine averages 26mpg!) the car is great for running kids to school and when the rear seats are removed (only the rear 2) there is a decent sized boot - of course with all the seats in place there is no luggage room but this is the same as all MPV's.
In conclusion, if you can get a good one with a service history (never mind the mileage as they will go forever) and its the right price - buy it. However my advice is to BUY A DIESEL!
