...6100 is easy to update, Umax regularly release firmware updates which keep the player compatible with most of the latest codecs (used to encode video). You just burn the update onto a CD and pop it in the player and it updates itself quite easily.
My only complaint with the player is that occasionally after finishing watching a Divx file the player can freeze to a black screen instead of returning to the menu. This is fixed by turning the player ... ...have found the playback of all formats on this player is impeccable.
So in short if you think Divx is your “bag” then I would definitely recommend this player. I would like to see future versions of this player with perhaps an integrated hard disc, a wireless network card and a DVD writer. I believe that Kiss are already selling a Divx player that has some of these features, so maybe the competition is hoting up.

As far as standard DVD playback goes there is nothing exceptional about this player, everything you would expect a budget DVD player to do is done no better nor worse than any other player in this price range (and some below this price range). It may seem strange but plain old DVD playback is not the important thing about this player. Nor, strangely enough, is the fact that its multi-regional out of the box...so what makes the Umax/Yamada DVX6100 ... ...If you have any Mpeg 4 movies (DivX, Xvid etc) then this little beauty will play them as well. Normally these files will only play on your PC (assuming you have the proper codecs installed). From an easy to navigate menu system you can select the file on the CD/DVD that you want to play, press enter and 'voila' there is your movie. So the video of 'Nancy's Wedding Day' that you compressed with DivX to fit on a CD that the family used to have to crowd ...
