Most internal modems are known as winmodems because they are driven by windows drivers and eat up a small percentage of CPU time to make them work. What an excellent modem, it is reliable and practical. I recently acquired the 3COM US Robotics 56K Modem as a gift and it is quite some present. Being an external unit it is easy to transfer it between machines, my laptop or desktop, this has saved me the necessity of buying 2 modems. When we bought this modem we knew absolutely nothing about modems, the internet or anything vaguely super-highway-ish! We were just recommended in the shop and so we got it. We have never looked back! So many of my friends have internal modems in their PCs and they have nothing but trouble but, I have to say, our external has never given us the slightest bit! It does pretty much everything a modem should, as well as coping with voice/fax machine ...

The 3COM 56k External Fax Modem I have been using for the past 2 or three years is great. When I got it the highest speed I could get was 33.6 (before X2 and 56Flex were ready) but the modem still outperformed my friends internal PCI and ISA modems. As soon as the X2 56K technology was available I flashed the modem and was soon surfing at 56k speeds. Again my modem outperformed the K56Flex internal modems my friends were using by a long way. You then simply install the driver and download a little flash file from 3com.com that gives you the latest 56K fast speed update. I bought this modem as an IT Proffesional to pass on to my users, my reasoning behind this being I personally have found it very easy to use. Quick to install, with option for Floppy installation or CD rom. Never have I encountered any problems installing the drivers. My only query has been with Telephony resource issues when more then one modem installed on a pc, but as basic users never normally use this function should not come up as an issue. ...
