60k to start with.....

Advantages: ..

...much more central than the University of Manchester one, with Piccadilly Station, Chorlton St Bus Station, and the city centre all within easy reach. The Trafford Centre is but a short bus ride away providing an annoying amount of temptation to broke students who should be studying anyway and not shopping. There are a number of halls of residence on campus (probably the only time in my life I’ll be able to afford an M1 residence.....) and others ...
...most unis, all 1st years who accept a place by a set date are guaranteed uni owned accommodation. There’s also a nice wide range to suit all pockets, from nice en suite catered to grotty little places, with lots in between. I was (and will be again) in Wright Rob which is self catered with shared bathrooms, but daily cleaners mean you have no problems in these areas. Facilities °°°°°°°°° Despite being a smallish uni, UMIST does well facilities ...

Highly recommended degree

Advantages: great nightlife, good choice of subjects, chance of a year abroad, great reputation
Disadvantages: sometimes courses are unorganised, tough competition to get in

I've just finished my third year of an International Management and French at UMIST and would recommend it to anyone. You get so much choice of modules that you can really tailor your degree to your interests. The third year is spent abroad, and everyone says it, but it really is the best year of your life. You meet so many people and gain a totally new outlook on life. Manchester itself is an amazing city - there's a huge student community and more ...

The best Management course in the UK

Advantages: top quality courses, mixture of people, great facilities for study and recreation
Disadvantages: campus spread out, no nearby accommodation

...still look back to my university days with many great memories, although it was only a year ago that I finished being a student in the vibrant city that is Manchester. I was enrolled on the Management course (which I'm told now has a magnificent, ultra-sophisticated building in the heart of the city) and had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised over the 3 year course. Not only was the course thoroughly useful in terms of the teaching ...
...of practical work, lively seminars and debates; in fact, everything that a student could want from a course. The lecturers came from a range of backgrounds (one such was Terry Leary, Chief Executive of Tesco's) and had varied opinions, which helped the individual to come to their own conclusions. UMIST has a great deal to offer in terms of recreational facilties, support for students and general atmosphere. Conditions for working are also top notch. ...

UMIST leading the way

Advantages: in the city, plenty of places to eat, and shop
Disadvantages: require high grades

...would expect from a good university the entrey grades r pretty high for some subjects. the university has many computer clusters so finding a computer to do ur work on is absolutly no problem, and of course all the computers are connected to the net. if u want to connect ur PC to the net from the halls then u can rent an ISDN line for a year. the Library is extreamly useful and has a huge range of books. umist students have the privalage to use ...

Very excellent Uni

Advantages: Excellent surroundings
Disadvantages: None

...this is a very good university to attend for leisure and pleasure as well as work! I did my computation degree at UMIST and it is one of the best rated courses (continously rates within the top 3 and it sometimes beats universities such as Kings College and Imerial - shocking huh!). WHERE IS IT? Located in the heart of manchester UMIST is a 30 second walk from the city centre! The main campus, theres only 2, is surrounded by motorways but don't ...
...The improvements to the university are visible year after year and the student union is effective as they actually listen to what you have to say. There is alot of research that goes on at UMIST and hence it has alot of good relations with ivarious industires. I'd say the best courses that UMIST has are all its Computational courses, its Optometry course nad the management courses. The weather is one thing that leaves alot to be desired for though!! ...

UMIST - not to be forgotten

Advantages: Good quality
Disadvantages: Not well know

They very fact that this university is not featured in the list of univerisities on this site is a reflection on the attitude of people in general regarding this university. There seems to be a poor recognition of this university, despite it is one of the oldest and arguablely the best university in the North West area. The courses are mainly sciences and management. It comes joint top in management with the likes of the London School of Economics ...

...and drive storing space. University network connection is available in most halls of residences. Library? UMIST's Joule Library has a huge quantity of books, journals, papers, etc. You have also access to some national databases and inter library loans are available. As a student from UMIST you can also make use of the John Ryland's University Library and the Manchester Central Library. Sports? UMIST students have access to three fitness centres, ...
...I also counts with the University of Manchester's residences, and personally I think this are better although they are 20 minutes walk away. You are guaranteed a place in your first year. Transport? UMIST is very close to Piccadilly train station. Bus services in the nearby Oxford road have continious service 24 hours. Manchester International Airport is just 20 minutes drive. Going out? Well, there is everything for any taste. If I have missed ...

Beauty is Merely Skin Deep

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Being interested in the BSc Comp/Linguistics course I really HAD to go see this place for myself. I first got there and my 1st thought was: "Oh my gosh, what a dump!!". I explored further, in and around the buildings and departments and it wasn't so bad. It's just that I had this totally awesome presumed image of the place that it was a bt of a let down. The staff, however, were great. I went to their Open Day and found what I went in for, which ...
...students who were helping out were also really friendly so I think that I would like it there. The canteen was larger than the one in my 6th Form, but the food wasn't all that special.. Also, I don't think I would be forking out for canteen meals every day when I'm at university. Living on a shoestring would just about sum up you student finance. UMIST is a uni based on science and technology (hence its name!) so there may be a very specific bunch ...

Best EE&E course in UK

Advantages: Excellent course
Disadvantages: A lot of work

I joined this department as a second year direct entry student from Malaysia. After graduating from UMIST, I can say that the course, Electrical and Electronics Engineering offered by UMIST can be one of the best in the country. As a part of our second year project, we were divided into groups and we were required to select a technical topic to present in front of some audience. This was really challenging. When we got into our third year, things ...
...which took us approximately 6 months. Apart from that, we had exams every semester and the exams really test how well we understood our subjects. This department was rated 5* and it was one of the best research department in United Kingdom especially in the Power Systems field. ...
