Advantages Advantages Friendly students and staff, fantastic lecturers

Disadvantages Disadvantages small uni, small library (social Science) Geared up towards live in students

I am studying at Bangor University for my degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, so I have current experience of the uni. This review is based on my experiences and views of the Social Science Dept in Bangor. I am not able to give details on other departments or faculties as I only have direct experience of the Social Science Dept. I will try to make this review as relevant as possible to all people considering university life in Bangor. You should also consider that I am a mature student (33) so my experience will not be the same as an 18 year old just leaving home for the first time. I ... more

    Advantages Advantages mountains and sea

Disadvantages Disadvantages not for city people

Bangor was my second choice and since my a-levels came in below par I spent 3 years at Bangor university, sorry, University of Wales, Bangor, and it was amazing. I'll talk you through the bits that I found out in those years (1996-9), which may be a tad out of date but may not. The City Yes it is actually a city as it has a cathedral. Most of the population would seem to be made up of students and retired people, who are mostly very nice. Bangor has pretty good shops for the size, and its high street is very very long. It's very compact and you'd be surprised how quick it takes to get anywhere ... more

Advantages Advantages Very close to science buildings, fairly cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not open early enough, staff could cheer up a bit!

When I say student union I'm going to be generally talking about the facilities available during the day. I have limited experience of the night time entertainment! The student union building is located on Deinol Road, Bangor. It is mainly used by science students, (only about 50 yards from the chemistry department) as it is a bit far away down a steep hill for use by arts students. It has a useful shop, not the cheapest for stationery, but good for sweeties and drinks! The shop opens at 8.30am. It is fairly well stocked and sells a wide multitude of things. There is also a campus branch of ... more

Advantages Advantages Contains one of the best Psychology schools in the UK, Cheap cost of living

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far away, Small university

Last year, whilst trying to write my personal statement, I looked through as many prospectuses as I could to help me choose my 6 universities. This was the first time I came across the University of Bangor situated in Wales. I was lucky enough to already know what I wanted to study - Psychology, having really enjoyed it at A-Level. Now I just needed to pick the right places to do my degree. A friend of mine is currently in her first year stuudying psychology at the University of Bangor. She totally loves it there - the course as well as the place. Bangor has been known to be ideally cheap for ... more

Advantages Advantages Friendliness and cheap accommodation

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit cut off from the rest of the world

My friends thought I was mad when I selected Bangor as my first choice. I am in my final year now and one thing is sure I did make the right choice. I was told that Bangor had nothing but hills and sheep and rain. Yes, I had plenty of practice walking up and down the various hills from my halls, my student house and the university, but that is cheaper than having to go to the gym!! It is also true that there are a fair amount of sheep around and we have our fair share of rain, but life in Bangor is great. It is small enough to be a really friendly place and the pubs are great. Accomodation is ... more
