    Advantages Advantages Friendly

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Parking

I nearly missed graduating from UWE by missing one exam. Having been here four years already I thought I'd tell you about it. First of all the Student Union, cant moan too much cos I was a SU Executive Officer last year. The guys do a really good job, but the apathy of the students is amazing. Balls are always being cancelled so are events, but its up to the students too help. MOst societies find it hard going up against the sports societies when it comes to funding and equipment. The library is soooo bad its untrue, books are hard to find, space is limited and now they've moved the Education ... more

Advantages Advantages st matthias, bristol's music scene, great nightlife

Disadvantages Disadvantages buses, limited parking in town, frenchay

I have been living and studying in bristol at UWE for over two months now and i'm still loving it. What initially made up my mind about coming to bristol was primarily the great music scene - if you're in the know, there's always some really good gigs and stuff going on all over the place, whatever music you might be into. The area around st nicks st and the bristol old vic has some really good jazz bars to chill out in where you also can meet really cool people. Timbuktu has gotta be one of my favorite places, it's like a permanent open mic night, just bring along your instruments, get up on ... more

    Advantages Advantages Friendly

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Hills

Hi i am a wheelchair user, not one of those old types who fits in the stereotype but a different crazy bonkers much younger sort. Well enough about me, currently i am a student at this Uni (UWE) and i would just like to say its not bad at all. Well the nightlife is good and the staff friendly, HOWEVER!!!! I must add there are a lot of hills and cobbles around Bristol (great now i sound like a miserable winning old disabled person!) There is also one big hill between the wheelchair adapted accommodation and the lecture halls. Basically if you haven't got good arms then you will need to arrange ... more

Advantages Advantages Great university, good night life, not far from anywhere

    Disadvantages Disadvantages high crime rate

I myself am on a year out from university, after completing two years at UWE. I simply can't wait to return in September for my final year! The size of the university may seem scary at first, but when you get to know it isn't that bad at all. The level of teaching is very high, and I have always found the staff to be very helpful. The facilities are also very good, with modern lecture halls and labs, in addition to the latest equipment. The library is the biggest I have ever seen coming from a small town, and has a good computer system to help you find the literature you need. Based in Bristol ... more

Advantages Advantages Just a wonderful place to study with a great atmosphere

Disadvantages Disadvantages Needs a bit of a touch up

I'm a first year pschology BSc student. I realise I'm going to sound biased when I say I LOVE my university. Now I don't get out much, so coming to university has just been overwhelming! I study on the frenchay campus, and I absolutely love it. The only downside is that some bits are a bit boring aesthetically with brick buildings, and some blocks could use a touch up. There are 2 halfs to the campus with the student accomadation on one side and the teaching blocks on the other. The student accomadation is made up of four huge courts (basically blocks of flats) and a student village which has ... more

    Advantages Advantages St Matthias

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Frenchay

Whilst it's only come 67th in this years Times league table, I don't much care! Having spent the past 2 years at UCL studying for an MA, having completed my BA at UWE, I can honestly say I would recommend this university to anyone wishing to study in the Humanities faculty at St. Matthias over the same faculty in London. To start with, the staff are friendly, knowledgable, approachable, and in some cases, quirky, which just adds to the charm and atmosphere of the place. Despite it's average rating in the league tables, UWE scores consistently high scores for teaching quality - this year, 22/24 ... more

Advantages Advantages Rich, varied nightlife. Lots to do. Good resources.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some bad accomodation. Class numbers.

If you're thinking of coming to university and UWE is one of your choices I'd think about what you really want from university, and what you like. Bristol is a fairly big city and maybe if you're coming from the country it could be a bit of a culture shock and you may not get on with it. But if you've had experience in a place like this before and you like the non-stop rush that the city brings then this is for you. Also the university itself is one of the most populous and there's new people everywhere to meet so you won't run out of friends that's for sure. If you're thinking about staying ... more

Advantages Advantages Modern facilities, quality of tutoring, social life

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of books, little community feel, no parking!

It's easy to look back at your University years as being some of the best days of your life. People also naturally hype the Uni that they attended because its the only thing they know. UP THE UWE! I attended UWE between 1994 to 1997 and had an excellent time - I studied Politics and Sociology. The quality of tutoring is generally excellent. And this was during the "bums on seats" era of Tory education policy. It has a very active student union - both politically and in arranging social events. It also ran an excellent student magazine known as Bacus. Bristol is a great student city - if you ... more

Advantages Advantages Good location, good social atmosphere

Disadvantages Disadvantages Overcrowding and lack of suitable accomodation

I had a pretty good time at UWE, however I did find the biological sciences course highly oversubscribe and run by very overworked and over stressed lecturers. There was a large mix of full time and part time students in lecture theatres as well as quite a number of mature students. The placements years provided by UWE are very good and many of them were abroad. Bristol itself is a very good place to be a student, accomodation on campus is very limited, first years really need to be on campus, which very few people on my course were. ... more

I am a second year BASA student and believe that not only is UWE academically sound but Bristol is buzzing and all A level students should head for the heart of the South West. Nightlife, employment, and accomodation the three most importnat issues to todays students, are all easily located. It would be beneficial if a student could secure a part time position as the cost of living here can be very expensive, especially if your of the heavy drinking persuasion! Know what I mean, and theres a lot of that to do!!!!! ... more
