Its a sad sad thing

Advantages: great to drive and built to last
Disadvantages: bit boring

I had the pleasure of owning a Mk.2 GTI from new and covered 120,000 miles over ten years until I wrote it off after skidding on an untreated icy road last Christmas. Even though this model lacked airbags, etc. it still performed well in destruction testing leaving everyone in one piece and limping home under its own power. With the great fun I had with this car over the last decade convinced me to buy another GTI. I bought a Mk.4 GTI Turbo in January ...
...I drove this car on test I was impressed by just how far VW had progressed over the last ten years. This car really is a quality item with everything well screwed together and a really nice interior with grippy Recarro seats. On the safety front the car has driver and passenger front and side airbags and three proper three-point seatbelts in the rear. I'm a bit of a car nut so I'd read all the quality car mags. before buying and I knew that the Turbo ...

The Best All Round Car of All Time

Advantages: Its fantastic in so many ways!
Disadvantages: They dont sell them today!

What can I say the title says it all. The Mk2 Golf Gti 8v is the answer for all people. Its cheap to run, I can get 38mpg (brimming the tank and calculating it from the mileometer), although when I thrash it (accelerate & brake with nothing in between) it will avg 28mpg although day to day will give me 33-35mpg normally, its quick, fun to drive, and people still recognise it for what it is and pull over on the motorways when you want to press on. ...
...most highly spec'ed being an 02 Saab 9-5 Aero yet I got rid of that becuase £70 fuel bills for 300-350mile ranges is not fun the speed was nice but handling was poor. I have had my mk2 since nov 1997, I bought it with 86k miles on the clock for £4,700, its a 91 3 door in black. The anniversary models like mine come with all the extras including extra wide BBS alloys which are £400 a piece new! The car has 162k miles on the clock (June 05) and its ...

VW Golf 11 GTI 8v

Advantages: Cheap, reliable, fast, and long lasting. Excellent choice for a used car.
Disadvantages: None except they are getting on now - choose with care!

Having owned a good few used cars over the years I can recommend the 8v as a superb cheap buy. Many have mileages close to 150000 or more and yet with careful looking after they continue to go well. The handling is very good and it goes round corners on rails. Low down torque enables overtaking to be done with confidence. The Mark two Golf is still highly sought after and with a little care good examples can be found. However you need to check out ...
...car. Check the bodywork, walk all the way round the car. Does it look cared for? Get on your hands and knees and look around for the dreaded tin worm underneath and in the bottom of the doors. Three doors are probably best as the body is supposed to be stiffer. A favourite spot for rust is the front of the windscreen on the scuttle - although it usually isn't terminal also the rear hatchback needs careful looking at, but again repacements can be ...

Quick review of Volkswagen Golf II GTI

I have the golf mk2 8v GTI 91 model, with a high milage of 294 000 km on the clock! And still going strong. When I purchased it the previous owner added a branch freeflow and a 260 cam. This car is amazing I love it, the handling is great, acceleration good, left a couple shocked faces behind on the road! The GTI's will always demand their respect on the road and even the old mk2 GTI's still dominate! I would recomend this car to anyone, just expect to spend a lil extra cash on small things just like any older second hand car. I find this car demands to be driving hard! Thats when it shines. ...

Best Gti ever.

Advantages: Fast, excellent handling, easy maintenance, plethora of parts available.
Disadvantages: None.

I owned a 1987 VW Golf Gti 16V for around 2 years until I had to sell it recently. Although they are becoming rare, and any good ones that are left are quire expensive, this is a very good car. A lot of motoring enthusiasts agree that the mk II Gti was the last tru Golf Gti until the mk V came along. The mk III and IV are far too heavy for the power that their engines produce nad this weight affects the handling too. The 16V mk II has 137bhp as ...
...rapid - 0-60 in under 8 seconds and a top speed of around 130mph. You have to drive this car to appreciate the handling compared to newer Gtis - it is very sure-footed and agile, and never understeers unless it is on a very wet, slow corner. Maintenance is also far simpler compared to most modern cars as all parts are readily available and everthing on the car is easy to fix yourself, or easy to access for a mechanic. Parts are also cheap since ...

Disadvantages: Common, Boy racer image

Ive saddly just got rid of my golf. What can i say these thins are reliable and i mean reliable mine had over 200,000 miles on the clock yet went like it had only 20,000. The great thin about the 8 valver sis there amazing low down power put your foot down in any gear and they just pull like a train whats more they are smooth and refined with it they sound pretty mean too. Comfort the standard fitment recaroes are a gem better than any other car ...
...great support and comfort. Handling well they're a cult car for a good reason though paus em beyound there traction limits especially in the wet and it can get scary bearing in mind they're a heavey car. Mind you heavy is good these thing's are built lioke a sherman tank. Space is good with good stowage space and a decent size boot. Fuel economy is good for a car with this much tourque. Stuff that goes wrong and to be checked when buying are second ...

MK2 Golf GTI's - Built to last!

Advantages: Fast, Solid, Reliable, Built to last, Cheap for Parts now
Disadvantages: Getting old, hard to find a perfect example

Well what can I say about the MK2 Golf? especially the GTI model imparticular? I have owned 11 MK2's with 7 of them being the GTI model. They are very solid, realiable and will run forever! Not only being very quick, they are excellent to 'mod'. There are many things that you can do to a GTI to suit your style, add rims, adjustable suspensions or even VR6 conversions. If you are interested in this, there are many enthusiast clubs along with shows ...
...your golf as some may have been thrashed, sills may be rusted or clutches may be on there way out. As when buying any car, check all points thoroughly and take a look at a few. Although parts may not be expensive, problems that may exist may end up costing $$$ (e.g. if the bottom of the door is shot, you may need to get another door and then a paint job). Post 1990 Golfs seem to be making more money these days, these are the 'big bumper' editions. ...

VW Mk2 Golf GTi

Advantages: Reliable classic. Powerful, agile and still looks great.
Disadvantages: Bland interior.

The Mk2 Golf GTi is an iconic eighties hatchback. The model I have been driving for the last year is an 1989 8 valve GTi and is a car that has been a pleasure to own and drive. The handling is remarkably deft and capable considering the age of the car and handles as well as, if not better than, many modern hatchbacks. The car is also surprisingly powerful, with far greater acceleration than than many of the sporty new little corsas and clios etc. ...
...but that is famously not much of a problem with these cars, many of which have been able to pick up an astronomical mileage. My own has covered nearly 100,000 miles which is actually quite low compared to most mk2 golfs around. The cons of this car for me have been a problem with the gear linkage that is apparently very commen with the mark two that has made gear changes a little rough. Also a problem I've had with the heating which I have seen ...

Quick review of Volkswagen Golf II GTI

A Golf gti m2are very hard to find in australia. i have a 91 gti 5 door 8 valve and these cars suit the roads in australia especially on long runs, parts are a bit hardto get as you have to wait for shipping but very much avaliable my gti has only done 16000klm does not use no oil or water, this model was built in mexico for australian delivery and only a hand full in western australia , so when you go past another dub you know they are passionet to , go for hard compound tyers for the front as they take abeating on hard cornering and upgrade the brakes to i have a rebuilt gear box and new head from previous owner, this baby flys ...

mk 2 golf gti

Advantages: Cheap,Fun,Quick,Reliable
Disadvantages: Too much fun...difficult to drive slowly!

Unfortunately I have recently crashed my golf but would like to express my thoughts on how wonderful this old car really is. The ultimate "hot hatch" you can now pick one up for around 500 quid and I challenge anyone to find a car which is more fun at that price...The Golf gti will beat most "executive" style cars both off the lights and round the bends! A truly reliable car, never in the 12 months did she fail to start first time...nor did I have ...
...and insurance)Which brings me to the only two negative factors for this car.Firstly the cost of insurance for a youngster like me can be as much as 4 times the value of the car!!! Mine was 1200 tpft! but well worth every penny because these cars are sooo much fun! which leads me onto the second negative point. The car is so much fun that it just begs to be thrashed! The German engineering is more than capable of handling harsh driving right to the ...

I love this car

Advantages: Looks brill and its fast
Disadvantages: none

Me and my Boyfriend bought a 2000 plate 2.0 GTI in November and I'm still finding little gadgets to play with. Our one is a 3 door, which at first I thought was going to be annoying when carrying passengers but the front seats rise up as you pull them forward, which gives your passengers allot more room to get in and out. We went from a Volvo v40 (a giant car) to this car but the golf has allot of room in the boot with 18 cubic feet. It has a theft-deterrent ...
...key with the proper electronic code. The handling is brill as I discovered the day we bought it, when I took a corner to fast and thought I was going to end up in a field. The car stuck to the road and didn't even cross onto the other side of the road. There's two-way steering adjustment and comfortable, easy-to-adjust seats, so finding a good driving position is easy. An eight-channel, 200-watt Monsoon sound system rattles the windows and a trunk-mounted ...

Ive owned 2 mk2 8 valve gti's and both have been the best cars ive owned and ive owned the following: civic, vectra, corsa, passat,205,mk2 1.6.They are very spacious and roomy for a small car and the feel that it is simply built for you.Very solid reputation and this is no exception(having written 1 off).Ive never had a problem with any of my Golf's whatsoever apart from the usual wear and tear with tyres and brakes etc.Very easy to service and not ...

This is my second Mk2 Golf GTI. Once you have owned one you will not want to part with it! Although it is now 16 years old, everything works as it should, the body is clean the interior is clean. The seats are surprisingly supportive. The interior is also suprisingly spacious. I use it as a daily driver, and considering it is a hot hatch form the 90's it give my other halfs car a run for its money in the fuel econmey stakes, I average about 35mpg. ...

Golf II GTI 8V

Advantages: Reliability, good low down torque, looks
Disadvantages: can't think of any!

Altough i'm only 24 years old i'm the proud owner of my 3rd MkII GTI. These cars have such a following which speaks for itself, looks are not outdated and those classic lines never fail to put a smile on my face! My current Golf is a '92 8V with 176,000 miles on the clock, drives like new and doesn't have a single dent or spot of rust on it. Power is smooth through all gears with a instant ooomph whe you put your foot down, the torque on these cars ...
...in acceleration and back road driving the MkII 8v will leave most new cars standing, 0-60 times of 8-9 seconds on a 12 year old car isn't bad at all with top speeds of 120-125 mph. A few small items such as wheel bearings and water hoses have let me down on the car but nothing major or to worry about, certainly alot less then other popular vehicles of the same age. All in all, a great car, great history and a great driving experience! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! ...
