Introducing Lou's 1999 VW Golf Review with images

AdvantagesLooks Good, drives nice

Disadvantagesmine is an oil-a-holic

"...began... *** The Car Details *** My Volkswagen Golf is a 5 Door, T Reg first registered in 1999 and cost me 1250 in January 2010. It has a 1.4l engine, which is just the right size for me and living in Birmingham with rush hour traffic. It has central locking with a key but not remote. Electric windows, power steering and heated electric mirrors, very handy in the winter. The car looks good. It is quite chunky for a small car, yet at the same ..." Read review

My trusty VW Golf 1.4S

AdvantagesReliable, comfortable, great looks, a pleasure to drive

DisadvantagesDo some homework before buying a second hand model

"...You feel safe in a Volkswagen Golf. It feels secure and well put together. And, at 5 years of age, it's again just sailed through it's MOT with no problems at all. It's also an enjoyable driving experience. Some purists might say the 1.4 has little power for a Golf... but all I can say is that it's been fine for me as a motorist who drives carefully and within the law. It's always been very nippy with perfect acceleration for surburbia and ..." Read review

My first car

AdvantagesEconomical, built to last, safe

DisadvantagesAlways seem to be costing money

"...Dad eventually decided that a Volkswagen Golf would be a good buy. ==Background Information== The Volkswagen Golf was first made in 1974 and to date there have been 6 different marks of the Golf. There are many different models of the Golf available including GTI's, TDI's and R32's. ==The Mark IV== I had a Mark IV Golf for my first car. I had a 1.4 E edition however there are many other models available including a 1.6 (available in E, S and ..." Read review

Quality and not speed

AdvantagesReliability

DisadvantagesPrice

"First of all, a little background into my experience with the VW Golf 1.4 This is the third new Golf I have purchase, my first Golf was the Mk3 1.4e 5 door on an "M" registration, the second was a Mk3 1.4SE with full body kit just like the GTI but without the performance and that was on a "P" registration and the Golf that I have at present is a Mk4 1.4E five door on a "W" registration in Jazz Blue. I have had the latest Mk4 Golf for coming upto ..." Read review

What you would expect from VW.

AdvantagesNice looks, solid build quality and reliability you expect from VW

DisadvantagesEngine is underpowered and leaking door seal.

"My car is a 03 plate and I've owned this car now for two years - it has just over 36,000 miles on the clock. In that time it has never let me down. Its a Volkswgen and from such a brand you expect a quality product and this wont fail to disappoint. The interior of the car is made of quality materials and feels quality as well as looks quality. It is reasonably quiet when you are driving at speed which also gives a feel of quality. The dashboard ..." Read review

Quick review of Volkswagen Golf IV 1.4

"Recently baught a mk 4 dark red VW Golf on a X reg, I was recently driving a VTR and the speed was a dramtic drop, but build quality is a million times better, i feel alot more safe in the VW, im not hearing anything rattle or shake, petrol is alot better, and with 17\'s it does actually look alot beter than the saxo. overall i score the golf 5/5 ... just got to save the money for the GTi so i can have to speed with the quality,

A solid little motor - if a little breathless

AdvantagesSolid, reliable and comfortable

DisadvantagesUnderpowered

"So, the VW golf, king of all hatchbacks? I certainly think its in with a chance... I have owned a Golf 1.4 for a couple of years now, and have to say i wasn't convinced at first, being a young lad I wanted POWER but was not particularly impressed with what the 1.4 litre petrol lump had to offer - although not too hot at hillclimbing, especially with more than one passenger, and slow at overtaking, the engine is economical and can certainly hold ..." Solid, reliable, but needs more power

AdvantagesBuild, resale value, looks, reliability

DisadvantagesLack of power

"This is the second Golf I've owned - the former one was a 1.6 Turbo Diesel. The 1.4, a later (M reg) model, shows improvement in ergonomics and carries on the VW tradition of high build quality, but the main problem is that the engine is not powerful enough to carry around such a solid piece of metal. For most of the time in urban conditions, the lack of power is not too noticeable - you may need to change down more often than you would expect - but ..." Read review

good alrounder you can rely on

AdvantagesReliable

Disadvantagesnot as flash as a Lamborghini, of course

"This was a present for my college graduation last summer and I have to say that I am really happy with this car. It fits the usual 5 people and only having 3 doors is not a disadvantage. The Golf has the ideal length to park it and powersteeing is integrated and makes it even easier. It is not the most stylish car around, but it is safe with airbags and all the usual safety features of a modern car. The integrated stereo does its job and it ..." Read review

A car for the people

AdvantagesComfortable and Classy!!

DisadvantagesNeeds a little more power

"I have recently purchased a Blue MK IV Golf E for 5000 with really low milage. I have had previously a MK II 1.4. What a change! For the first time since I have passed my driving test I feel safe. Equipped with 2 airbags, really comfy seats, drinks holders, lights under the window visar. The egine is near silent, until you go beyond 3000revs. The 16 valves makes the car have more umfh! There is so much more head room, my brother who is 6f has no ..." Read review

Worst Car I have ever had

Advantagesit would get you from A to B

DisadvantagesQuality was awfful

"...door Mk4 I realy think volkswagen have lost there way the used to build good quality cars but since they have realised they have got a reputation for building good cars they started saving mony by introducing inferrior products to there cars many a time I would clean my car and whils hovering out the back foot well I would be sucking up nessersery pices off plastic to get the seats to move which VW would not fix on warranty now the seats are uncomfitable ..." Good solid, reliable Golf 1.4S

AdvantagesBuild quality, safety, fuel economy

DisadvantagesCan be expensive to buy

"I have owned my Golf 1.4s for just over two years now, and in that time it has been a pleasure to own and to drive. My previous car was an Alfa Romeo 156 so the Golf had a lot to live up to, and while it does not have the aesthetics or style of the Alfa, it is an admirable replacement. The 1.4 16v engine is surprisingly nippy, while also being economical in it's fuel consumption. Ride quality is smooth and you instantly know you are in a well built ..." Read review

Reliable, nice looking car

AdvantagesNice looking, reliable, good spec (alloys, metallic paint, P/S, CD)

DisadvantagesToo slow, paint easily chipped

"I purchased a second hand (L Reg) VW Golf 1.4 Match ltd edition around 2 years ago. The Match comes with alloy wheels, metallic paint, power steering and CD player as standard, which are all very nice to have. It is a nice looking car, very reliable, fairly spacious (good for a small family), but a little slow. The 1.4 litre engine is underpowed as it is a fairly heavy car, and so the acceleration is quite poor, it is reasonable on motorway driving, ..." Read review
