In fairness as time went on I found the engine to be less noisy. The first couple of hundred miles where intolerable – I really thought I’d made a mistake buying this car. However things do seem to loosen up over time and by the time I came ...

Advantages: Great handling and looks Disadvantages: Dodgy electrics
While on holiday in France, in the middle of a supermarket car park, I remember the day I first clapped eyes on this new generation of 'golf'. It was cold and very wet that day, yet there was one thing that was particularly striking - its eyes. It just looked at you, longing to be driven. I vividly remember being totally awe-struck as to how VW had managed to put the indicator, sidelights and headlights all into one glass 'dome'. I was just learning ... ...the car to have.
Well, to be honest, it took quite a while to get saving a deposit and then to con my parents, sister and any other unfortunate remotely related person into part-subsidising the loan. Anyway, eventually, on the way home from work one day, which just so happened to be past the local VW dealer, there was the car of my dreams. It had only just come in that day, it hadn't even been cleaned at that point. It was in 'Cosmic Green', but ...

Advantages: prestige, build quality Disadvantages: You pay for what you get
I was torn between buying a brand new Ford Focus for around the £9,000 - £10,000 mark or paying a little bit extra for a second hand VW Golf. After test driving the two cars I was impressed by both but several things ensured that my decision to buy the Golf was the right one. Resale value, build quality and prestige. The Focus just looked a little too plasticky and there is not the same kudos as being seen in a Jazz Blue - drop dead gorgeous - VW
... ...the build of the Golf to be fantastic. The panel fit and instrument switchgear are flawless. There are reassuring clunks and clicks in all the right places. One additional touch of class has to be the neon blue intrument panel which is really original. It also is very soothing on the eye and ideal for driving in the dark. The driving position can be altered plenty to allow those that are vertically/horizontally challenged to rest in comfort. There ...

Last year I ordered a brand new VW Golf (1.6SE), my first ever VW, I eagerly awaited for it to arrive on the 7th Jan 2000. Fantastic I thought - great car, great quality, good reputation... little did I realise the problems I would have over the year... within a week I found that, even though the pre-delivery inspection had everything ticked, the headlights were out of alignment, the windscreen wipers hit the door when operating, washer jets were ... ...was set about half an inch in more that the passenger side, the bonnet wouldn't close, the steering wheel wasn't straight and all of the lights dimmed when closing any of the electric windows - bum I thought, and took it to my local garage to be fixed... one of the sales guys had a look at the car and agreed all the faults, and took it in for repair, got the car back - I was then told that they couldn't repair the door handle as it was "within tolerance" ...

Advantages: Build quality, solid feeling Disadvantages: Price to a certain extent
I bought a new manual 1.6l Golf at the beginning of 2001, my first car. So far it has been a charm, a great drive with sufficient power (86kw) and very direct handling. This is combined with 'chunky' looks on the outside to make it a great car for getting around the country as well as city.
The 1.6l engine is quite efficient in the mid and high range but sometimes lacks when accelerating from a start, especially with the air conditioning on. This ... ...lever along with the small steering wheel makes you feel like a racing driver whilst being much more fuel efficient than the real thing!
I would recommend opting for the additional alloy wheels if you are going for looks, the standard hubcaps make it look like a bit of a grandma's car.
The brakes are more than adequate, and have brought me to a sudden stop on more than one occasion when I wasn't careful applying the pressure to the middle pedal.

Advantages: Nice car, tough, safe, bundles of street cred Disadvantages: Boot could be bigger
...great example of what work Volkswagen can do. The reassuring firm thud when the doors shut, what sounds like someone barring up fort knox when you lock the doors, the whirr of the engine, the many airbags fitted as standard, all these things show you that your Golf is built to stand the test of time. The only disadvantages are the boot size, quite small, and the bumpiness sometimes when you drive over big holes in the road, it is not always very ...

Advantages: build quality, badge Disadvantages: family car, hubcaps
My Golf is a company car, i received it just under 10 months ago, by this stage the car was already 18 months old. First impressions of the car are good, it has a respectable badge, it has a quality look about it, something the mark III Golf never quite pulled off. Once you get inside the vehicle the quality continues. The seat fabrics are nice to the touch and hard wearing in an attractive black pattern. The dashboard is nicely laid out with easy ... ...headlights are on. The dash is generally cased in quality plastics which are nice to the touch, alhough there are a few areas which need improving. Boot space in the Golf is excellent, and the rear seats fold down very easily to provide more space. The storage space in the is also quite good, with deep side pockets, and a large lockable glove box .
The drive of the car is average at best, with wallowing family car handling, and overly soft suspension. ...

Advantages: Reliability, luxury, comfort, low insurance group, looks, low depreciation Disadvantages: There's a lot of them about
If you’re looking for a top-class, luxurious and reliable car, yet for a reasonable price…then this is it. My 1.6 diamond black golf (mk4) has been with us almost a year, and I could not be more satisfied. The build quality has shone through, with the only problem being with the inside cover for the electric sunroof (though at least partially my fault). We took the car in the morning after phoning the dealer, and had it back that afternoon, all covered ... ...perfect colour for the car, especially with the smooth optional alloys, though dirt does tend to show up quite visibly. The interior is nothing short of luxurious, way ahead of the rest in its class, with the subtle blue instrument lighting a masterful touch. I chose the cream interior, despite thinking it would get dirty almost instantly. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it doesn’t get dirty as easily as you’d think, and needs only a ...

Advantages: great image, strong residuals, good value Disadvantages: not an inspirational drive
...the build quality of all Volkswagen cars is second to none and the Golf is no exception. The interior is as solid as ever, with the presence of quality and refinement wherever you choose to look. The seats are supportive and comfortable for short or long journeys. All buttons are at arms length and are well placed, even though the radio can be a little fiddly and is sited right at the bottom of the centre console.
The brakes are very good and there ... ...ride and handling are not as good as that of a focus and driver involvement isn't hair-raising.
But, if you want a classy, good looking, refined car with residuals as solid as a rock and the image to match, and if you can forgive the small niggles the Golf tends to have, then this is a car, which I, and most others would enjoy. It's a car, which is a pleasure to drive and own. ...

I have the auto version of this classic vw golf s mk4 . I have reflex silver which in my opinion is the best colour. I have enjoyed driving my golf from day one. I got it from new in 2002. It has only had a few minor problems since some stupid person rear ended it. Other then that it never had any faults. I would always trust vw safe construction. I know a few people with Golfs and every one of them love their car. The S version i have comes with ...

Advantages: Great look Disadvantages: Very unreliable
I brought my VW Golf MK4, 8 months ago now. It was an R reg with 45000 miles on the clock. I immediately took a liking to it due to its beautiful design and 106bhp. However upon purchasing my golf I have had endless problems, and after talking to other owners in other forums I found my problems to be generic with every other person I spoke to. On mine 1st the clutch went, but was covered under warranty so I wasn’t too bothered. However 5k miles later ... ...among VW1.6 engines. It cost me a further £500 to get this problem fixed, and that was with only a reconditioned gearbox fitted.
Next the front passenger side window has broken, which is also going to cost, and that is not to mention the frequent fluctuation of revs on my rev counter...
I have been very upset with my purchase and warn others against buying a 1.6manual engine golf! One lady I spoke with was considering taking legal action against ...

Hello
Reading above reviews I felt I had to write few things regarding my Golf.I bought a second hand golf[unlike most above]3 year old98 S reg.obviously coughed up a lot for it but then i thought peace of mind is important.
To be honest all the above mentioned virtues are true about this car.Served me well over 2 years.
But the porblems started once the warranty period came to an end.
The service centres are notorious for bad work and high cost ... ...is a major thing for a car as It can damage engine as it did for mine.my car did under 70k milegae wise.My 60 k service earlier should have alerted me regarding changing cambelt which is standard recomendation but then VW says change in 80k according to one garage,120 k according to another!!Outcome it costed me 1500 pounds to repair!!
I guess buying new is diffrent kettle. ...

Advantages: very comfortable, reliable, ride quality, build Disadvantages: there are too many on road, handling not so nimble
I have had a 1.6SE golf. Out of all MkIV petrol engines this is probably the one to get when you take economy, performance, depretiation into account. It's smooth, comfy, and does everything you want it to rather well. When you come to press on is where things get a bit hairy. Even with a new set of tyres she's inclined to understeer and the body roll is a tad more than average (not as good as focus). Not the most inspiring car, and you'll see plenty about (especially in silver), but very well engineered and the looks grow on you! ...
