At last I own a Golf GTI!

Advantages: Outstanding build quality, tons of extras, Solid and dependable
Disadvantages: Not the fastest GTI, expensive parts,

When my brother in law offered me his 1999 Golf MkIV GTI with only 34,000 miles on the clock I had to jump at the chance. I had only been in it previously as a passenger, but I found the seats extremely comfortable and supportive, the interior was very high quality with none of the cheap plastic I was used to in my previous cars! As my brother in law lives in London, the Golf was used very little, averaging around 4200 miles a year. In fact, when ...
...miles since the year before! Once I had taken delivery of it, I found it very smooth, the steering and pedals give a good amount of feedback (which I fine crucial to enjoyable driving) and the brakes are sharp and precise. It is solidly built, and so much bigger than the last car I had (renault 5) that I feel as if I am driving a tank! There is plenty of boot space, and lots of legroom (and headroom) for rear passangers. The air conditioning and ...

The best car I've ever had. It's FUN.

Advantages: Easy to drive, fun, low rev acceleration, design.
Disadvantages: Wallows on big bends

My Golf 1.8T GTi is the best car I've ever had. 2 years on and 50,000 miles I enjoy driving it now as much as when I first had it new. It's a company car. Having test driven a Passat, Mondeo, Vectra, Volvo S40, Audi A3, I chose the 5-door Golf. Easy to drive in town, fast, good handling, good looks, pleasant on long journeys. The reason I most like it is it's easy to live with, it's not the fastest car on the road, it's not got the best sports handling, ...
...I've not found one to match it. It's acceleration is good, especially at the low end of the revs, in other words, I don't have to work the engine up the rev counter to accelerate. Think about this when reading reviews in car magazines. Some cars will have a better 0-60 acceleration but often this isn't used in day to day driving, we don’t all want to push the revs up to the red line. Similarly, the car doesn't have a particularly firm sports ...

Boy racers of the world unite

Advantages: fast, fun and comfy - the perfect drive
Disadvantages: expensive insurance and parts can be costly

I bought my X registered GTI T 150 in September 2004 for £8,000 and it had 69,000 miles on the clock with full service history. Drawn in by the fact that it looked beautiful in silver, was a four-door car and was a dream on the test drive I couldn't argue about the price. Inside the car is well built with everything in place for comfort from the plastic spring loaded cup holder to the deep Recaro seats that keep you firmly in place when cornering ...
...that you could fall asleep in them without any problem. The steering wheel is hand stitched leather and really easy to grip and from a driving point of view you don't have to lean or bend to reach the light adjusters or the CD player that comes as standard. At 6ft tall I can reach the pedals easily and don't have to have the seats pushed right back meaning that in the rear you can fit two strapping 6ft blokes and they will also have plenty of legroom. ...

Golf GTI

Advantages: Smooth handling, reliable.
Disadvantages: Boring, has little character, expensive price and insurance.

I am a learner driver, and am insured on my mother’s Golf GTI. Luckily for me, thanks to my mother’s work circumstances, this is free – unfortunately, learner drivers should expect to pay up £6000 for insurance on this car. The Golf GTI is a beast – about a tonne of metal and smooth German engineering. Being a diesel car only adds to the power under the hood, and some may find 6 gears a little daunting. The gearbox is smooth, as is the power steering. ...
...responsive – I would say that the breaks, in my car at least, are just a touch too sharp. The clutch pedal throbs just a tiny bit, not enough to be noticeable or off-putting but enough to appreciate the engine. The acceleration pedal does not require as much pressure to achieve the desired revs – it is very responsive. The engine is smooth and demands respect, but unfortunately the Golf doesn’t live up to it. It’s becoming an increasingly common ...

This car is fantastic. Comfort is fantastic and on long journeys that is a welcoming sight. It is very quick and once you get over the turbo lag it really lifts its game! my car is a year 2000 and it has had hardly anything needing replaced in that time. Everything on it is hard wearing and the build quality is superb. I did have a problem with a leak which was caused by my sunroof ducts being clogged but after sorting that i havent had any problems ...
...go right too cold but it didnt take much to sort. On both the motorway and back roads the car holds the road perfectly and it feels very safe to be inside. It doesnt bounce around and just feels lovely. Fuel consumption isnt the best around the town but it still gets around 26MPG and on the motorway i get around 42MPG which is fantastic. It is gorgeous to look at and both inside and outside were well thought out! All the controls are easy to find ...

Advantages: Prestige, build quality
Disadvantages: Small rear space

Whilst company cars are becoming less and less attractive, imagine the joy of being handed a list of over 100 cars and being asked to choose one. It's like being a kid in a candy store. So why choose the Golf over any of the other cars I could have chosen? 1. At the time, the MK IV Golf had just been launched and so there was the obvious appeal of having something totally new. 2. There was the badge prestige - in my book VW Golf beats Vauxhall Astra ...
...Focus Zetec interested me, it wasn't as powerful and, being a bloke, that was important. Still is! 4. It came in at the top end of the cars I could have chosen, so while I couldn't go for all the options, the very fact that it was one of the more expensive cars on there meant it was always going to be a contender. So that was what persuaded to get one in the first place, but how has it been since? Well, in 20,000 miles that the car has now done, ...

The Refined GTI

Advantages: Smooth, economical, fast without feeling it, well made
Disadvantages: Expensive, poor gear change, bad dashboard layout

This is a grown-up GTI. Refined is definately the word. I have been driving my 1.8 GTI Turbo for over a year now and have been very impressed with the car. When I first drove the car the first thing I noticed was how smooth and refined a GTi experience could be, the engine hardly has to try to pull you away at speed. This is not a revy street monster, just a gentle squeeze of the pedal and you get an unfussed push in the back. If you're looking ...
...car for you. Another benefit of this low-revving engine seems to be the fuel economy. When I relax and cruise along the motorway, near the legal limit, I can get a journey average of 40 mpg. When I'm pushing it the figure drops to around 33 mpg. The handling and brakes are smooth, safe and just excellent. I was hoping that the gear-change might become a bit slicker with time, but it's quite notchy, even after 23,000 miles. The interior is smart ...

Golf GTI 1.8 Turbo REVISED july 05

Advantages: It is fast, economical and very roomy iside
Disadvantages: Insurance group

Well for the past 12 months i have owned a silver golf gti turbo and it has been the best car i have ever owned. It is very comfortable, cheap to run in the terms of owning a turbo car on average 33 miles to the gallon!!! It looks smart and ellegant and is practical for the family can easily have 4 adults in the car and not be uncomfortable. I have not had one little bit of trouble with mine and will be looking to get another when i am going to ...
...side and to me it is the only two down sides to the car is firstly the insurance group of 15-16 depending on which company you use and secondly the handling. For a sporty hatch it doesnt handle very well in my opinion. I paid £10,000 for mine 12 months ago and is worth around £8000 now. To insure it for a 25 year old with full no claims i paid £770 fully comp. Well sadly i had a bad accident in my lovely golf gti turbo but gladly still here to ...

Golf, Classy GTI performance

Advantages: Just a cool car, solid, quiet, quick if pushed' why do car magazines keep droning on about the Ford Focus as if it is the same class, I've driven a few and chuck them out with the trash
Disadvantages: Back end flicks out if pushed too hard, good tyres stop this to a certain extent

This is not the quickest GTI (ho needs it to be, the spotty geek in his 10 year old RS has no other goal in life than to beat you to the next set of lights), this car says, "so what", it looks and feels like it wants to be a bigger car. It sits on a motorway far better than many a bigger car I have driven, 500 mile journeys are now a pleasure, when you have had a particuarly bad day, put your foot down at 95 and it will deliver the goods unlike many ...

1.8t GTi. Got to love that turbo !

Advantages: great all round car
Disadvantages: insurence, ever increasing road tax

I have owned my mk IV golf for over a year now and it is by far the best car I have ever owned. There are however a number of downsides to this overall great car. 1 The insurance is pretty steep as your probably already aware. 2 Not so many people are aware that the TAX IS INCREASING on this model. Tax is currently £210 but as I understand it, band F will (this car) will become band J, therefore will increase up to £ 260 and in 2010 (not that long ...

Quick review of Volkswagen Golf IV 1.8 T GTI

I have owned this car for 7 months now and im really enjoying it, its not the quickest car in the world, nor is it the best handling, however it is nice to drive, the instruments you get as standard inside are fantastic and clssy, not to mention well built. My favorite feature is the blue interior lighting that offers a nice environment to be in. Talking about the exterior, this car looks great and keeps with modern times. Buy one!! ...

mk IV 1.8t Golf GTI

Advantages: FAST, understated, RELIABLE
Disadvantages: handling is a bit heavy

A pleasure to own - very fast, understated and yet prestigious! You will notice that people will keep a distance from you when you drive this car - because this car can seriously move...! 0-60 in just over 8 secs... Perhaps a little old in looks now in 2008, this car still packs a PUNCH and is certainly a good purchase and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face! Since owning my GTI (from 54000 miles) I have had the timebelt changed, water pump ...
...lube services, rear bushes changed, and drivers side door locking module changed (which i believe is a common fault??) have recently bought 4 new michelin tyres also - but it does help to be glued to the road with this kind of power!! have achieved 45 mpg+ on motorway, 35+ regularly in town. Go get one!! ...

all things that GTi means

Advantages: brilliant little turbo charged pocket rocket, great value for money
Disadvantages: none!!

I bought this car after saving up and planning to buy its TDI brother, but when this one turned up, it was far to good to pass up at £3600 with 91000miles, full history, recaro cloth seats, climate, electric sunroof. it wasnt what I expected to buy, having set my mind on a a4 tdi. But having owned it for 6 months, covered 6000miles, its never let me down, everything still works, it still looks cool and modern no matter where it is and it is very ...
...trying hard either. There are some bits that are expensive like the 16" tyres which cost me £80 each for michelin. Oil it uses isnt cheap either £36 for 5litres. But those are minor niggles, which wouldnt put me off recommending it to anyone who is considering it, ignore the old fashioned 2.0 8v and 1.8 20v non turbo, this is the pick of the bunch. ...

Refined Racer

Advantages: Refinement - Solidity - High gearing - Straight line speed
Disadvantages: Handling - Large distance from lock to lock

Advantages: 1) Interior – Well put together and finished. 2) Stereo – Decent eight speaker model as standard. 3) Front Seats – On the two door model the front seats flip up rather than just fold forwards to give significantly easier rear seat access. 4) Solidity – The car feels extremely solid and refined. 5) Straight line speed – Seems to have a bit more raw power than competitors such as the 306 XSi. 6) High gearing – Means that revs. stay ...
...a little over 4000 RPM. This helps reduce engine noise on the motorway. 7) Reliable – Doesn’t use any oil and has never let me down during the one year I have owned it. Disadvantages: 1) Large distance from lock to lock – To move from lock to lock on the steering wheel requires a large number of rotations. This makes the car harder to handle when a rapid change of direction is required or while attempting to control a skid. 2) Handling – There ...

Elegant at work and dirty on the week end.

Advantages: Ultra reliable, speedy enough, comfort and elegant.
Disadvantages: expensive Inusrance, slightly expensive service.

Owned a MK2 Golf GTI and wanted to stay with the GOLF GTI brand. After long search I found the 1.8T T reg (150 bhp) with 65000 on the clock. As soon I tested it I fell in love with car. The Recaro sport seats are fantastic. Long journey so comfortable (wife has a passat 1.8T and it is comparable to the passat in comfort).
