    Advantages Advantages Fast, exhilarating drive.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Still not a true "sports" car

The Volkswagen Golf has been around so long now that there are readers who will not even remember a time when it didn’t exist! It is in danger of very soon achieving the same legendary status as Volkswagen’s other legend, the “Beetle”, the original version of which was ordered by Mr. Hitler. The first “hot hatch” version of the Golf was the car so beloved of boy-racers (and even some not so boyish ones) the VW Golf Gti. This car dominated this particular market for years, until the advent of the Peugeot 205 Gti, and today there is a plethora of similar vehicles available to aspiring Michael ... more

    Advantages Advantages Incredible engine

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

This is the first Golf that I've owned and I have not been disappointed one bit. The build quality is faultless, the level of equipment is excellent but most importantly it is a fantastic car to drive. It may only have the same power output as the 1.8Turbo, but the delivery is incredible. The engine smoothly delivers the power all through the rev range, the car just never wants to give up. The looks are sleek and attractive, but the simple stlying hides the beast that lies beneath the bonnet of this car. I cannot recommend this car enough. ... more

This golf is the new equivilent of the old VR6. Theis does not dissapoint. This is the most powerful small car that I have ever driven. The acceleration in th golf is extrodinaryand thismodel is relaible in a way that the VR6 never was. It has the classic golf good looks and style, and is certainly a car only for a certain market. This is because of the sheer speed and cost. The major drawbacks are the leverl of fuel comsumption and insurance costs. If you are looking for a small convienient efficant car do not buy this golf, but if you like the idea of speed and acceleration with a lower fuel ... more

Advantages Advantages Ride quality, drivers cockpit, climate control, esp, good insurance, build quality.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Slightly Thirsty

Having driven around in mundane company and privately owned cars for the last 5 years I wanted to go back to the days before having 2 kids and a mortgage. I only had a small budget but wanted lots of car. I searched the small ads looking for Type R's, Megane 225's, Clio Cup's etc. For anything of any quality you are looking at paying over £10k. I then started to lower my sights and began looking at Seat Leon Cupra, a superb drivers car but the build quality is terrible. Lot's of rattles, lots of cheap plastic and poor trim. Despite these down sides I had almost purchased one of these cars when ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's got kick!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Fuel consumption

I've owned twelve cars in the last 15 years, some of them old run arounds, some of them brand new performance cars....... in fact, my very first car after passing my test was a Volkswagen Golf. The first car in my household is a brand new performance car.....so we decided that the second car should be a bit more 'sensible', but something that would still have power as I do a lot of motorway driving. We decided that a Volkswagen Golf would be a good option as we wanted reliability and we knew that for a small car, the Golf has an excellent amount of boot space. The rear seats fold flat giving ... more

Advantages Advantages Smooth, Quick and Classy

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A little Thirsty

VW Golf V5 170 5 Door I purchased my VW Golf IV V5 in July 2001, which makes it one of the first 170bhp 20 valve versions. Before choosing the V5 I test drove the 1.8T and TDI 130, but the noise of the engine and the smoothness just did it for me. I drove the car for three years on lease contract, which was the best deal for me at the time being self-employed. It averaged 28 mpg on a mixture of driving, from B roads to motorways; I have to admit I have a heavy left foot, but have seen 46mpg on the computer at a steady 60 mph. I found the seats very comfortable on long journeys with good lumber ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap Insurance, Cheap Servicing Costs, Good Perfomance

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None Yet :)

Just bought my Golf a few days ago and from what I had read, it is a very good car - but now I have it, it is fantastic! It is quick without being too fast, its refined without feeling like a cruiser and its reliable but without the really expensive services - it has no cambelt so the most expensive service is £275, and £75 of that is the titanium plugs they put in them... Inside the car is very plush without it feeling too over the top. All of the controls are easy to get to and visibility is great all round. I liked it mostly because it looks a little like your standard cars and not even the ... more

I owned a 170bhp V5 golf for 18 months and they where the best 18 months of motoring I have ever had. Don't get me wrong the car isn't perfect but that is part of the appeal. At the time I was doing 25 - 30K a year and I wanted something fast. Originally I ran down to the nearest Honda dealer and test drove a Civil Type R which was a amazing peice of kit but the suspention as very firm and inside it just didn't have very much A/C was a extra which cost a £1000 and that was about it. There was nothing to spoil the car it is a pure drivers car something I would love but with my back over and so ... more
