Advantages Advantages Gorgeous exterior, good interior space, affordable and very quick.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Haphazard reliability and common on the road

A large part of my job involves having meetings with clients at their premises, hence my company has a decent selection of cars for the consultants to use for travelling. Amongst this fleet is a silver diesel-fuelled 1.9L VW Golf Mk5 TDI. As I drive a Ford Mondeo, I am used to a silky smooth and straightforward ride, however the Golf is a very different animal. Historically, the VW Golf has had a stigma attached to it that it is a boy racer's car. I remember back in the mid-90's that a few of my older brother's chavvy friends were incredibly proud owners of the Golf. Since then it has been ... more

Test Model: Volkswagen Golf SE 1.6 FSI 5 door Reg: AK06 YVC Mileage: 2470 Official 0-60: 9.7 secs Official max speed: 118 mph Before you start to read this review I will have to state that I am a self confessed VAG group fan. And I have loved the new Golf design since the first time I clapped my eyes on it. So after being car-less for a week while I waited for my brand new Seat Leon 2.0 TDI FR (review soon) I was fortunate to rent a new Golf mk V SE 5 door with the 1.6 FSI powerplant. Having already owned a VW Bora I was already aware of the quality both inside and out of VW cars. And also was ... more

Advantages Advantages Spacious 3dr, drives like a dream

Disadvantages Disadvantages A few electronic teething problems

I have had my golf for about 2 months and done around 2500 miles in it. I purchased the Golf as an ex-demo car. The first thing you will notice when you compare the Golf to equivilent 3 doors (Astra Sport Hatch, Citroen C4 Coupe, Renault Megane) is the sheer space. In all the others cars I struggled to get in the back (I am 6ft 3in) and getting out was even harder! In the Golf I can hop in and out with ease and with plenty of head room. The boot is also a good size - I have used the Golf to move out of my student house and was amazed at how much you can get in in one go when the seats are down ... more

Advantages Advantages Sleek, stylish and well designed

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't think of one!Get

Hooray, I've been promoted!!......I was lucky enough to be able to choose a VW Golf as my new company car!!. Seeing as I've already had it 2 weeks, I felt that that was plenty of time to give it a bit of a mention on ciao! I'll concentrate the majority of this op on the model that I have, rather than VW Golf as a whole make of car, as I know next to nothing about the other models in the range! I have a 1.4 FSI (5 door) Now....a little background for you..... This all new, sparkly, newer, better, Golf is the fifth generation from VW. From what I can see, it is the most radical change that VW ... more

Advantages Advantages Understated style for those with taste.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too understated for some tastes.

About our car Our car has just arrived and looks stunning in silver, the colour is optional metallic paint at an additional cost of £365.00 and a front centre arm rest at £120.00. The centre arm rest is really essential in our mind as it gives additional air vents to rear seat passengers and also provides a storage compartment lid and an ashtray lid Not that we smoke but it tidies the console massively. We have chosen the 140bhp tdi as it offers the best compromise of driveability, fuel consumption and practicality in our mind at least. About Golf Mk 5 If you are using your own money to buy ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very roomy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Engine a little flat

On the whole, the VW Golf, even though one of the newest models released onto the market is probably not as radical as some of it's competitors such as Renaults Megane or Vauxhalls Astra, but never the less it is still a VW, and when people purchase one of these German marques there are certain things that people expect. These requirements in my opinion have been more or less fulfilled. I have worked in the automotive industry for some 10 years and have a little experience of what is good quality and what is bad quality. As soon as I opened and shut the door I could tell that this was a good ... more

    Advantages Advantages Residual market value

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive - has become too clever for itself

I have a 2007 MK5.5 golf hatch 1.9TDi - all I can say is that it is appalling compared with a MK4 golf I have (MK5.5 due to the new type engine with 132g/km CO2 emission). First a simple stupid design: fitting a chrome rim to a coin tray on the dashboard! It causes reflection in windscreen and distracts driver - a safety hazard. The fuel economy of the 1.9TDi engine has worsened a lot. With my MK4 Golf, I get 52mpg the usual way I drive. With the MK5.5 only 45-47mpg! The high-gearing of the 3/4/5th gears is murder! They are supposed to save fuel but they force me to drive in lower gears ... more

    Advantages Advantages Safe and Economical

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Squeak and Rattle

I have just clocked 1,000 miles (yes a RHD!) and have moved on from a Golf Mk4 which was also a TDI. Initially the overall comfort and styling held me in awe, and once again the blue console back-lighting is fabulous. As you start to get used to driving this car, the acceleration, road holding and ride all seem superiour to the previous Golf, but then it is 5 years old now so that may not be a fair comparison. One complaint that I have stemmed from a rattling sound coming from the driver side (RHS) door. I haven't sorted this out yet and am waiting for my first service. The sound is more like ... more

Advantages Advantages Spec , handling , performance, economy, safety , Looks !

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit pricey, diesel 1.9 is an old design of engine ( though pulls very well)

1.9TDI Match 5 door . New Sept 07. Sarah's car , but a few observations from me...We are absolutely delighted! I own a recent BMW 530DSE and yet in some ways the Golf is more fun to drive! We didn't expect this. Highlights of the recent "Match" spec include an ipod interface ( holds it and charges it too, not just the poor flappy lead that BMW give you !) . Attractive easy to clean alloy wheels, powerful air con, sports seats , 4 electric windows, all inc in the standard spec. All you need to pay for is metallic paint. We bought from Listers Stratford on Avon who are outstanding. Child seats ... more
